Sue Bradley Artist

Sue Bradley Artist My painting journey began as a teenager with oils and ‘poster paints’. I have painted in most mediums, including acrylics and on-glaze bone china and porcelain.

My favourite medium these days is watercolour, as I love its freshness and vibrancy. I enjoy ‘traditional’ landscape scenes but I’m also very interested in creating pattern and textural effects and experimenting with semi-abstract themes. My favourite subjects are landscape, flowers and animals. My approach to tutoring is for everyone to relax, enjoy, progress individually and above all, have fun!

I worked as a scientist for many years, before training as a primary teacher in science, art, design and technology. I now tutor adults at weekly painting classes, and provide workshops and demos to art clubs and societies
I have had paintings selected for major exhibitions including the 2012 Artist and Leisure Painter magazine annual Open Exhibition at Patchings Art Centre, Nottingham and the Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition at the prestigious Mall Galleries, London. I am thrilled that one of my paintings has just been juried through the first stage of the World Watercolour Competition. I am also a professional artist with the Society for All Artists (SAA). My work is sold through a local gallery in Beckenham, Kent as well as online. My passion for travel provides a wonderful opportunity for landscape sketching, painting and photography. I have travelled to many parts of Europe, the USA, North Africa and New Zealand.

Very inspiring workshop today led by Tracey Jane Cooper.
I’ve had alcohol inks on my shelf since pre-Covid, untouched. Today I cracked them open. So much fun and so vibrant! Here are some of my experiments.

Apart from attending our local school with Bowie and living in Beckenham and Bromley, George Underwood was the artist behind this album cover which I loved together with the music. Another interesting fact: Underwood and Bowie were taught art at school by Peter Frampton’s dad. R.I.P. ‘Mr Underwood’ (is that a coincidence?).

In my class we have been exploring portraiture both realistic and illustrative.
We tried a take on Vermeer’s ‘Girl’ but with the extra challenge of watercolour.
The first photo shows some of the students’ work (some were still W.I.P). Then we had a go at the Les Miserables illustration originally by Emile Bayard, very experimental in watercolour using students’ choice of colours or medium…some used line and wash or even graphite and charcoal. The second photo is my demo piece using granulating lunar blue () with a touch of burnt sienna. Great learning curve for all of us!

D-Day anniversary.
Sadly the Battle of Britain flypast cannot now be part of the commemoration ceremony. Always enjoy seeing these aircraft flying right over our house in and out of our local Biggin Hill.
Remembering those who were lost, those who served and the spitfire pilot killed this week.
