Chemistry and anatomy were being studied in the late 1600s behind this beautiful facade.

The History of Science Museum is the world's oldest purpose-built public museum, which opened first in 1683 as the Ashmolean Museum to house Elias Ashmole's collection. In the late 1600s, it was a science centre in Oxford with a chemical lab and anatomical theatre in the basement and teaching in the entrance gallery.

The museum is open to the public, free entry Tuesday-Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM.

Less is more. I was admiring this gorgeous Christmas tree at Magdalen College.

Founded in 1458, the build was delayed to 1467 by Wars of the Roses, a civil war that led the Tudors to the throne in 1485.

Famous writers such as the creator of Narnia, C.S. Lewis, and Oscar Wilde and many others have walked the corridors of this college, which is open to visitors.

Since 1911 the Bodleian has stored a copy of every book printed in England. The Weston Library is one of the buildings to house some of this impressive collection but is also home to some insightful exhibitions. The latest one, 'Melancholy', explores the early research dating 1621 into what gives us the 'blues' and courses of action.

The world lost Sir Martin Wood on 23rd November of this year. , which was started in Martin and his wife Audrey’s garden shed in 1959, was the first, and still one of the most successful, spin-outs from the University of Oxford. They developed the world’s first superconducting magnet as well as the first fully functioning MRI for medical use. Condolences to the family!

The relationship between the University of Oxford and the Colleges is perhaps more interesting than you might expect. A future undergraduate student reading at Oxford University is matriculated as such, but the tuition is provided by the College the student is allocated or associated with. The building here is the School of Examinations, where students are examined at the end of their first and last year, before earning their degrees.

The School of Examinations is located in central Oxford at 75–81 High Street. The building was designed by Sir Thomas Jackson and built in the late 1880s. The building is a magnificent venue for hire and offers a virtual tour as well. Gutenberg’s printing press appeared in 1450 in Mainz, Germany and the first book was printed in Oxford in 1478. Humble beginnings but now Oxford University Press is the largest university publisher in the world. Whilst the printing has changed radically since then, live demonstrations of this old printing press are done occasionally. The next demonstration will take place on Saturday, the 18th of December between 11 am - 1 pm. If you happen to be in town, pop in for this rare opportunity of watching the exquisite printing press in action.

Oxford's two rivers, the Thames and the Cherwell offer both a generous supply of fresh water to the city, as well as the joy of punting. Punting is famously done in other cities around England, such as Cambridge, Bath and Stratford-upon-Avon. When in Oxford, it's one of the things that should be on your to-do list.

In the distant past, the Bodleian Library of Oxford University used to be a chained library. This means that books and manuscripts were so precious and in such short supply that there had to be chained - no loans possible either. This knowledge makes us appreciate the books made available to us in public libraries even more. The oldest part of the Bodleian Libraries, the Duke Humphrey Library is now open to visitors and offer tours of the library and reading room otherwise only available to students, Oxford University staff and affiliated persons.

Oxford Dictionary defines a cloister as 'a covered passage with arches around a square garden, usually forming part of a cathedral, convent or monastery. Many wonderful cloisters can be found in the colleges in Oxford.
This one belongs to Christ Church and it was used as a filming location for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone when Harry first finds out that his father was a quidditch champion.
Christ Church is now open for visitors and offers self-guided tours of its buildings and grounds. 🥾🕶🎒🧳👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
