Last week our volunteer Lifeboat crew took part in a search off Ardrossan South Beach following reports of a stand up paddle boarder in difficulty.

This time it was classed as a false alarm with good intent, but with stand-up paddle boarding fast becoming one of the nation's favourite water sports, it seems like a good opportunity to highlight the RNLI's safety tips and advice about how to head out onto the water safely.

Any water based activity has inherent risks so take some time to familiarise yourself before heading out on the water.

Our Arranology films are out! Three short films showcasing Arran's geology, ecology and archaeology, each one made by a different professional film crew in collaboration with local experts. To learn a bit about these 'ologies' which make Arran so spectacular, or even just for a blast of rather excellent island scenery, find the films here: www.arrangeopark.co.uk/arranology

Many thanks to HIE and The Arran Trust for funding this project!

To reduce the risk of coronavirus being brought into island communities by people who are unaware they are infectious, the Scottish Government is encouraging anyone planning to travel to a Scottish island to test before they do so.

You can order rapid lateral flow tests for delivery to your home anywhere in the UK and they should arrive within 24-48 hours: www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-getting-tested/pages/no-covid-symptoms/ The Scottish Government recommends that you test three days before you plan to travel and then again on the day of departure. If you are positive, this would allow you to self-isolate before you begin your journey.

Please note that if your test result is negative, this is not a guarantee that you do not have coronavirus. You must continue to follow national and local restrictions, including FACTS guidance. If you develop coronavirus symptoms you must self-isolate and book a PCR test.

This is a voluntary scheme and you will not need evidence of a negative test to travel to a Scottish island. However, we would encourage you to participate in order to reduce the risk that you inadvertently carry coronavirus into one of our island communities.

Arran: COVID-19

After considering all options, many of our businesses have taken the difficult and emotional decision to close and take a pause during the current situation. This is not a decision that has been taken lightly, but the priority for Arran as an island, is to look after the health and wellbeing of our island residents first and foremost.

Ferries provide a lifeline to the island, and are required for getting essential deliveries and services on, and emergency services off Arran. Our skilled health and social care team already work under pressure with limited resources to support critical and essential services on the island.

To this end, and in accordance with national guidelines, we are sure you can understand that we are not encouraging visitors to Arran at present. It would be irresponsible of VisitArran to be promoting our island for any non-essential travel.

When this situation is over, please be assured that a warm Arran welcome will await you. We have great community spirit on our island, and we will all pull together to help the most vulnerable in our community, and to support each other. During this period we may share posts with images of our beautiful island, to uplift spirits and to remind you what we will have to share with you, when the situation ends.

We are sure that you will all understand these are unprecedented times, and we have no idea when things will revert back. In the meantime we would ask you, our friends, to take care of yourselves; we thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you in the future.

Stay strong

Pirnmill centered around Andersons shop and post office. A stream flowed to the right of the store and provided the water the power Clarks Mill, a building set back from the road where the pirns were made out of birch wood for the thread industry in Paisley. As well as having a post office, shop and garage, Mr Anderson took photographs, many of which were made into postcards.
