We humbly and thankfully believe our view from the front steps of Endfield House is one of the prettiest on the Isle of Man. Facing directly south, we watch the kids play on the beach and the fishing boats and sailboats move in and out of the Port St Mary harbour. We like to bring our folding canvas chairs out in the evening, watch the sunset, and celebrate this peaceful place.

Most mornings are magical in Port St Mary, but especially so in spring and summer, when the soft dawn light makes its way across Chapel Bay, the beach and the harbor. Mist flows down the glens from the mountains, and the world seems golden. Endfield House has looked out at those dawns since 1885. Thanks to neighbor Andrea Hawley for capturing that magic hour.

A lovely sight yesterday just outside the Port Saint Mary harbour - the Ocean Adventurer cruise ship from Quark Expeditions, disembarking passengers onto coaches for tours round the island. The ship weighed anchor about 1830, headed for Scotland. This season 26 cruise ships are calling at the Isle of Man, with more than 10,000 passengers discovering why we love this place! This was taken from the seafront lounge at Endfield House.

You can come to the Isle of Man to speed up - or you can come to slow down. The Manx expression "trae da looar" means "time enough", and these recent natural speed control officials are busy ensuring road and rail journeys are taken at a leisurely pace, the better to admire the island's beauty! Thanks to IoM neighbors Paul Parker and Helen McVicar for these photos!

Happy Christmas and Glorious New Year to all our Facebook friends of Endfield House! If you have been lucky enough to catch a performance of the Manx Choral Society whilst you are here, you know the quality of this amazing group of singers. Just announced: they are heading to Carnegie Hall in New York - to perform the premiere of a new choral work by famed composer Sir Karl Jenkins! What an honor, for an already well-honored choral group! http://www.iomtoday.co.im/article.cfm?id=37843&headline=manx%20choir%20heads%20to%20new%20york§ionIs=NEWS&searchyear=2017

Singing in front of a packed-out crowd at one of the most revered concert venues in the world, may seem like a pipe dream for many groups and choirs on the island.

While All Hallows Eve or Halloween is being celebrated in various countries around the world, the Isle of Man celebrates what may be its oldest continuing folk tradition: Hop-tu-Naa. There is vegetable carving - but on turnips, not on pumpkins - and instead of Trick or Treat, visiting children sing the sweet Hop-tu-Naa song at your doorstep in hopes of getting a treat. It's a lovely tradition, and we hope it continues for many more centuries! Here's the BBC story: http://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-europe-isle-of-man-41822976/hop-tu-naa-the-isle-of-man-s-oldest-unbroken-tradition

Hop-tu-Naa predates Hallowe'en and involves going round houses singing songs with turnip lanterns.

So many things to be proud about on the Isle of Man - and so little time to brag about them! Here's one of my personal favorites - the glorious - but tiny - Peel P-50, the smallest production car in the world, according to the Guinness Records people. The recent auction of two of these rare gems of creative downsizing sold for more than £ 200,000, and are worth every pence! http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-isle-of-man-40936238

The sale included a Peel P50, officially the world's smallest car to go into production.

Happy Tynwald Day to our neighbors and friends on the Isle of Man. It's the world's oldest continuous parliament, started 1,000 years ago by Viking settlers, full of ceremony and celebration for a good reason - the rule of the people still rules! Here's the BBC report:

Thirteen pieces of legislation will be discussed on Tynwald Day, while the public can also lobby politicians.

So many cool things and places to explore on the Isle of Man. Climb up the hills behind Endfield House (and keep climbing) until you reach the summit of the South Barrule, where you will stand in the middle of an Iron Age hill fort - the largest and highest on the island - and mapped on a new atlas of ancient forts in Britain and Ireland. http://www.iomtoday.co.im/article.cfm?id=34532&headline=Atlas+maps+Manx+hill+forts§ionIs=news&searchyear=2017

A new online atlas has been launched capturing the location and key details of all the ancient hill forts in Britain and Ireland - including 30 in the Isle of Man.

We love to read about the Isle of Man in other places. The Telegraph just explained why the island is drawing new tech and financial people, and why the line at the Shoprite and Tesco is a little longer! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/buy/isle-man-motor-racing-tax-breaks

Perhaps it is better known for its TT motorcycle races, when the whole island is suffused with the smell of burning rubber.

The Manx folklore refers frequently to the mysterious Cloak of Manannan - the thick fog that seems to shroud the island and could hide it from invaders in ancient times. The Gulf Stream is usually the culprit - warm water and colder air. But this view from the International Space Station hints at its effectiveness! England on the right, Scotland at the top, Ireland on the left.

Back at the turn of the (last) century, Endfield House and Chapel Bay were already a favorite spot to enjoy the seaside. Dressed a little more liberally, we enjoy it as much today!

Port St Mary, facing south across the Irish Sea gets sunny Winter days occasionally that brighten the spirit and warm the bones. The calm of Chapel Bay brings us all outdoors, basking in the light and shaking off those winter chills. Wonderful feeling!

Yes, our magnificent Loughtan sheep rule their hillsides above Port St Mary, and this fine example greeted us while walking along the Raad Ny Follan (The Way of the Gull) near the South Barrule mountain. He wasn't challenging our passage - he just wanted to examine us and point out some amazing views we might have missed! Come walk with us around the Isle of Man!

I admit that nobody travels to visit the political processes of countries, but the Isle of Man may prove a tempting exception. Each year, the island representatives meet in Tynwald (Vikings would call it Thingvollr) and they have been doing it for 1,000 years - longer continuously than any other parliament on the globe. It happens each summer, and elections are coming up in September. Any government process that has aged that long and that successfully needs to be visited! The Isle of Man produces superb food products - so many for a small island, We love Isle of Man Creamery products, some of which (yummy Manx Cheddar!) are available in some American grocery stores. Here are the latest IoM winners of the Great Taste Awards, and I agree - they are world class and delicious! http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/what-great-taste-we-have-1-8042839

Manx food and drink producers have won a record number of Great Taste Awards – the ‘Oscars’ of the food industry.
