🚨 New skills hub launched bringing 5,000 more construction apprenticeship places 🚨

5,000 more construction apprenticeship places will be made available per year thanks to a Β£140m industry investment.

A total of 32 new Homebuilding Skills Hubs will deliver fast-track training to local areas that need more housing, while giving apprentices vital skills to boost housebuilding in the UK.

The government is working with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the National House-Building Council (NHBC) to launch the purpose built hubs, which will provide a realistic working environment for training for key construction trades, including bricklayers, roofers, plasterers, scaffolders, electricians, carpenters and more.

The fast-track apprenticeships offered can be completed in 12-18 months, up to half the time of a traditional 24-30 month construction apprenticeship, meaning more construction workers can be trained quickly and into highly skilled jobs.

Tim Balcon, Chief Executive of CITB said:

"It's clear that we need to rethink how we train our workforce and be much more agile in our approach. We have worked closely with the homebuilding industry and government to develop a programme that is focused on equipping individuals with the skills they need to be productive on site, in the most efficient way. This is truly a collaborative approach and one we are very excited about.

This investment to launch 32 Homebuilding Skills Hubs will help meet the homebuilding targets while flattening peaks in demand for construction skills on homebuilding across the country."

14/11/2024

HyNet North West is the UK's flagship industrial decarbonisation project, leading the way to a low-carbon future in the North West. By the mid-2020s, it will cut regional carbon emissions by 25% while generating new jobs, enhancing skills and attracting major investment.

The project is built on two key innovations:

β€’ Carbon Capture - safely storing CO2 from heavy industry
β€’ Low-carbon hydrogen - producing clean hydrogen to power industry, transport, and heat homes and businesses.

By creating a local supply of sustainable energy, HyNet will not only significantly reduce emissions but also strengthen the UK's energy security. The pioneering initiative is set to make the North West a global hub for clean energy, with thousands of green jobs and a clear path to a sustainable future for the UK.

Hydrogen will be produced at the Stanley Manufacturing Complex by EET Hydrogen in the North West, supplying local industries with low-carbon hydrogen. As production ramps up, the network of customers will expand.

The hydrogen will be transported via underground pipelines, much like natural gas today. HyNet's hydrogen network, developed by Cadent Gas Limited, is the UK's first of its kind. INEOS Inovyn is repurposing salt caverns in Cheshire to store 35,000 tonnes of hydrogen, ensuring a secure, flexible supply of home-grown energy.

Over 40 organisations have signed up to decarbonise through HyNet, transitioning from fossil fuels to locally-produced hydrogen. Successful demonstrations have already been run at Pilkington Glass and Unilever.

HyNet partner Eni is supporting decarbonisation in hard to abate sectors. Additionally, repurposed pipelines will transport captured CO2 from industry to be safely stored under the sea in Liverpool Bay.

How do you see the UK's energy landscape evolving in the next decade, especially with initiatives like HyNet?

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome – Know the risks

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a serious condition caused by regular and frequent exposure to hand-arm vibration. It occurs through the use of power tools, machinery and equipment that produce vibrations, such as impact wrenches, grinders and drills. Prolonged exposure can lead to reduced blood flow, nerve damage and a range of debilitating symptoms.

β€’ Approximately 1.5 million people in the UK are at risk of HAVS
β€’ Around 2000 new cases are diagnosed each year
β€’ Early detection is crucial to prevent long-term damage

🚨 Appointed Person Moving Loads (APML) training updated 🚨

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board has updated its Appointed Person Moving Loads (APML) training and test (TAP01) to ensure continued relevance with the engineering construction industry.

The changes have been made by the ECITB to reflect the Appointed Person's safety critical role in lifting operations within the ECI.

Changes include:

β€’ Making the health and safety elements of the training less general and more relevant to the discipline

β€’ Making the pre-requisites for entry to the training more robust to ensure only experienced riggers and erectors can attend

β€’ Moving loads of skates is an element that has been added to ensure the training keeps up with the operations used on sites

β€’ An updated, clearer logbook for those new to the discipline has also been developed and is required to be completed via onsite consolidation before competency testing

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board has opened applications for the 2025 ACTIVE Cup competition.

The high-pressure project management competition, which has been running since 1994 and takes place three times a year, gives teams experience of the whole project management process as they manage a simulated project through an ex*****on phase of 28 weeks.

The ECITB organises the competition in collaboration with the Cranfield School of Management, and is inviting engineering companies to submit teams for the January and March 2025 events.

The January competition takes place at Cranfield University (near Milton Keynes) from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th January 2025, with the March competition held from Monday 3rd to Wednesday 5th March 2025 at Carnoustie Golf Hotel & Spa near Dundee.

ECITB CEO Andrew Hockey said:

β€œThe ACTIVE Cup is one of the flagship components of our project management programme to develop and nurture behavioural skills, such as collaboration, in the next generation of project managers.

The competition gives teams experience of the whole project management process and tests the wide range of skills needed for this such as planning, cost control, negotiation, working under intense time pressure, and of course, collaborating both internally and with other teams.

Effective delivery of projects is crucial for the engineering construction industry, particularly to support our journey to net zero.”
