North Ronaldsay Lighthouse Cottages Unique Three star self catering accommodation in the refurbished Light Keepers cottages

The former Light Keepers' cottages have been refurbished to a high standard. The 4-star self-catering accommodation will be one of only three of its kind in Scotland, and the only one which is on an island. We are pleased to say that the Former Light Keepers Cottages are in full operation and receiving guests all year round.

On Thursday 12 December 2024 at a celebration in the Royal Hotel Longhope, volunteer members of RNLI Longhope Lifeboat, who have had at least five years of service at the time of King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s coronation, were presented with the King’s Coronation medals in recognition of their commitment to the RNLI’s mission of saving lives at sea.

Congratulations and thanks go to Kevin Kirkpatrick, Alex Sinclair, Robbie Thomson, Kenny Budge, Angus Budge, Aaron Spence, Oscar Spence, Ian Avis, Steve Rhodes, Colin Bates, Christine Bradshaw, Callum Heddle, Max Andrews and Iain Cromarty.

Thank you to Alan of the Royal, a rather fitting establishment for this event, for his warm hospitality and to Kevin Kirkpatrick for presenting the medals as Deputy to the Lord-Lieutenant of Orkney.

So very well deserved, we are proud of you all.

In May 2022 Louise was climbing at Yesnaby when she suffered a terrible fall. With severere injuries she was picked up from the rock below by the crew of Stromness Lifeboat - Violet Dorothy and Kathleen. They had to use the RIB to get in close enough and, even then it was a very tricky operation. Once on the all-weather lifeboat Louise was picked up by coastguard helicopter for transfer to The Balfour and onwards to Aberdeen. After several months in hospital she was finally allowed to try walking again with the aid of crutches. Last weekend Louise ran a 10k challenge and is pictured here with her medal. For the last two years she has made a determined effort to get strong again. Lifeboat rescues usually happen on a single day and are then over. The crews go back to their day jobs. The effects of the rescues, however, can last whole lifetimes and into next generations. Louise and her family remember, every day, what Stromness Lifeboat crew did in May 2022.
