North Ronaldsay Lighthouse Cottages Unique Three star self catering accommodation in the refurbished Light Keepers cottages

The former Light Keepers' cottages have been refurbished to a high standard. The 4-star self-catering accommodation will be one of only three of its kind in Scotland, and the only one which is on an island. We are pleased to say that the Former Light Keepers Cottages are in full operation and receiving guests all year round.

Kirkwall lifeboat were tasked late last night by Shetland Coastguard at 11.28pm, to the report of flares being sighted between Weyland Bay and Isbister Bay. The crew quickly assembled and launched at 11.40pm.
On arrival the ALB crew searched a pattern that was coordinated by Shetland coastguard. After a thorough search of the area, the Kirkwall crew were stood down at 1.15am and returned to their berth. Although on this occasion it was a false alarm, we can’t stress enough the importance of the public reporting any unusual activity or sightings at sea or around the coast to the emergency services 🛟⚓️🌊

In an emergency at the coast -

•Step 1
Call 999

•Step 2
Ask for the Coastguard
Tell the operator that you need to speak to the Coastguard.

•Step 3
Describe the emergency
Tell the Coastguard: what you’ve seen, where the incident is, when it happened, and give us your name.

Using 999 with speech or hearing impairment -
The Relay UK service lets deaf, hard of hearing, or people with a speech-impairment alert police, ambulance, fire, or coastguard services by either calling via a British Sign Language (BSL) relay assistant or texting a message to 999 using our emergency SMS service.
You must register your mobile phone before you can use it. Don’t wait until you need the emergency SMS service!

Pentland Ferries say work on the Pentalina is now complete and the vessel is set to return to service on Tuesday the 13th of June. The vessel has been in dry dock at Birkenhead for the last few weeks after grounding at the end of April near St Margaret's Hope with 60 passengers on-board. The company has been unable to run any services as their other boat, the Alfred, is on loan to Calmac on the west coast.

Managing Director of Pentland Ferries, Helen Inkster, said: “We can confirm that after some unanticipated delays, the work on the MV Pentalina is now complete. The vessel has met class and MCA approval, and is now en route back to Orkney.

“To allow time for transit and the crew to have sufficient rest, we plan to recommence service on Tuesday 13 June. We regret the delays for our customers but are pleased that the service between St Margaret’s Hope and Gills Bay will soon be reinstated.

“We thank our customers for their patience, and our crews and shoreside teams for their unfailing dedication and determination to get the vessel back into service as soon as possible.”
