There are two known methods of language processing used when we learn how to talk:

Analytic Language Processing is the most common, whereby children tend to learn single words as units first. Child development talks a lot about first words for this reason, and people often count how many words their child knows or uses. Progression of language learning then moves towards combining words into different phrases and sentences to communicate needs, wants, desires and to have conversations etc.

Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) alternatively begins with children imitating phrases he or she previously heard (delayed echolalia), often repetitively from television programmes or when using electronic toys, games or devices. This is one of the reasons some children love devices so much; it’s how they learn best by being able to listen to certain things over and over again. Language development later involves children breaking down those learned phrases as he or she learns the meaning of the individual words. And they later learn how to use those individual words to build other, novel phrases and sentences to communicate.

Our little guy is definitely a GLP, he loves learning chunks of language, especially songs, and whole chunks of his favourite programmes that he later acts out! He’s definitely not non-verbal - he chatters away to himself a lot, but he definitely still struggles to communicate with other people. One of the reasons for this is because GLPs often use learned phrases to communicate things that seem very obvious to them, but are not very clear to other people, and we’re still trying to decipher all of them!

I’ll share some of his favourite gestalts if you like??

There’s no doubting that when you become a mum you realise that you were never really busy or tired in your previous life! And the same is true when you become a a mum of a child with additional needs! For us we had our neurotypical daughter first, thought that was hard, then had our autistic son, and realised how easy that actually was in comparison!! Now, it’s not a competition, you can only relate to the experiences that you have had, and ignorance is bliss! But as a sen mum you have additional things to juggle, it’s not just the parenting challenges, but the hospital appointments, school meetings, reduced timetables, additional days off, reduced child care options, lack of before and after school clubs, lack of holiday clubs, council paperwork, and legal paperwork too! Honestly, it’s never-ending! And employers are blissfully ignorant of these additional challenges too! They often promote themselves as being flexible and supportive, but it’s rarely true in reality. We’ve simply had to re-assess our lives and our careers, to enable us to meet our son’s needs, but luckily it’s 2024, and there are other ways to make money that are more flexible!

I’ve seen so many posts from autism advocates on this subject. It’s not uncommon for autism parents to either burn out or be forced to quit hard-earned careers, which is quite frankly wrong. I’m just glad I have found a different path that works around the chaos for us, and that I can help other families in the same situation too!

Who knows someone that can no longer work due to caring responsibilities???

In July 2019 Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC) did a survey in partnership with TTG Media (Travel Trade Gazette) to gauge maturity of travel businesses across four key dimensions of diversity and inclusion and found that travel was a long way behind the other industries surveyed.

Now this was 5 years ago, but there’s still a long way to go to improve things in the industry. As mentioned in my previous post, improving diversity in the work force, really helps to improve inclusion in the industry as a whole!

My special interest is in neurodiversity, so I’m keen to encourage more people with personal experience of neurodiversity either personally or through family and friends to join the travel industry, to help to improve things from the inside! So if this sounds like you, and you love to travel too, let’s chat! ✨

What do we mean by diversity and inclusion in the workplace?

Diversity: Everyone is respected as individuals and valued for the different perspectives they bring

Inclusion: Everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute to business success and fulfil their potential.

When we think of this, we initially think simply of equal opportunities in work for everyone, and that is obviously vital. But we don’t always think of the additional benefit, which is that those people are then able to accurately represent society in the work that they do and this in turns helps to ensure that products, places and services are accessible to all!💡

This is obviously a very individual decision, but here are a few things that might help you to choose not if, but when to visit Sorrento! 🍋

Summer is mid-June to mid-September and is the hottest, and driest time to visit! It’s perfect if you want to chill by a pool or at a beach club by day and explore in the evenings, because it can get incredibly hot in the height of summer!

Autumn is from mid-September through to Christmas! The weather is mild, with plenty of sunshine, in between the showers!

Winter is from early January to mid-March. It’s much cooler, wetter and much quieter, some businesses close down, but lots remain open, and it’s the perfect time to visit on a budget!

Spring is late-March to mid-June. The weather is probably the most pleasant, with mild temperatures and long, sunny days, making it the most popular time to visit, which is great if you want to see Sorrento thriving!

Personally I love to visit places off-season, when it’s quieter, the weather is milder, and you can bag yourself a bargain!

Go to Sorrento! 🍋🇮🇹 🍕

For lemon sorbet…or limoncello…or lemon cheesecake…or limoncello spritz…or lemon pizza! 🍋

You get the idea!?! 🍋

There are so many gorgeous shops too, with handmade products, leather sandals, wooden trinkets, and everything you could ever dream of adorned with lemons! 🍋

I thought the whole lemon obsession might be a bit tacky, but this is Italy, so of course it isn’t…but it is addictive! And I quite miss it! I definitely should have bought a Sorrento lemon bauble for the Christmas tree! 🍋

I will:

✨choose shorter, cheaper flights
✨travel off season
✨reduce luggage as much as possible
✨stay in multiple hotels in one trip
✨take our own food on the plane

I won’t:

✨fly at the crack of dawn or late at night
✨stay in a 💩 hole
✨share a transfer that spends hours dropping off at every hotel under the sun
✨sit at the back of the plane

I always pay extra for:

✨fast track at the airport
✨an automatic car
✨room service
✨luggage collection when available

I think 36 out of our 80 suppliers were here at our trade stands in Sorrento today, and they will be showcasing some of their amazing products over the next 2 days too.

They do this by speaking to us, presenting, showing us incredible videos, and in smaller group sessions too.
We learn so much from the teams, who all have first hand experience of their products, so these events are invaluable. We also make great connections with the teams, which really helps us to make sure that your holidays go smoothly and are extra special too!

And they know who the top bookers are too, and go the extra mile for us! 🙏🏻

Grateful to have a host agency that organises these fabulous events, and to have amazing relationships with such reputable suppliers too! ✨

What is ITQ?

It’s our host agency’s annual convention!

It’s an optional event, and is our largest and most comprehensive training event.

It’s a 3 day event, set in a different spectacular travel destination each year, and is apparently the largest in the industry!

And the theme this year: The Future Is You!

It brings together major travel brands, industry executives, and celebrity keynote speakers. This year’s headline partners are Classic Collection and Virgin Voyages!

Hundreds of Advisors network together in training classes, trade shows, award ceremonies, and private parties to take their businesses to the next level.

And prizes are won, which tend to be amazing holiday experiences! 👀

Last year we were in Malaga, this year we’re meeting in Sorrento, and next year’s destination will be announced soon, so watch this space!!

Malaga was my first ITQ, and this year after being asked to write an article and do a podcast, I’ve been asked to speak on a panel…in front of over 600 people! 🤯

Wish me luck!! 😂

See you in Sorrento! 🍋🇮🇹🍕🍸

Dining on a cruise is definitely one of the highlights. It obviously varies massively from cruise line to cruise line and from ship to ship, but in general there will be restaurants that are included for breakfast, lunch and dinner, including buffet and a la carte, as well as more casual snack options around the clock, and room service that might incur a delivery charge at certain times of the day. Then there tends to be some more exclusive options that might incur an additional cost too. The bigger ships obviously have more choice, but most cater really well for a variety of people, and tastes, and there tends to be healthy options too. They also tend to cater well for dietary requirements, but it’s best to check in advance with the cruise line before booking then talk to the head chef on arrival too.

In terms of etiquette dress codes vary hugely, and there are rules around what food items you can bring onto or take off of the ship, so these things are worth checking in advance. Sometimes reservations are required, but there should always be more flexible options too such as pizza places, burger bars and coffee shops! It’s also acceptable to take food from the restaurants back to your cabin, and you should have a mini fridge to keep a few items or drinks chilled too.

In general there tends to be more variety and better quality food on the best cruise lines than in the majority of hotels and resorts on land, and all just a short stroll from your cabin, so if food is important to you - maybe you should consider trying a cruise??

Has anyone had any great or terrible experiences with food on cruise ships? Please share to help others out!

If you or your kids are the sort of person who gets bored by the pool, and like to have something to do, then cruising could be perfect for you! Cruise ships are designed to keep everyone happy, so they make sure that there’s something for everyone! Activities vary hugely across the different cruise lines, so it’s important to choose the right ship for you to be able to do or avoid certain activities! 😂

Cruise ships these days are very good at providing various different facilities and activities for every age group, from babies, toddlers, older children, teenagers, adults and older people too. They tend to zone areas, so people can find their vibe, and are great for multi generational family trips, or families with children across wide age gaps. Sometimes it can be difficult to entertain children of different ages, especially on holiday, but not on a cruise! It’s easy to go from activity to activity across various locations on the ship, and the children’s facilities and kids clubs tend to be split by age, plus teens get their own hang out spaces away from annoying adults and younger siblings! It’s also really easy to socialise and make friendships, and the kids clubs offer late night hours so that the kids can continue having fun with their new friends whilst the parents have date nights too!

Everyone’s a winner! What’s not to love!?! 🛳️

Why are cruises so convenient?

✨Cruising is the easiest way to see multiple destinations in one holiday.

✨There are lots of options that depart from the UK, avoiding the need to fly.

✨The ship sails whilst you sleep, meaning you can wake up in a different location, maybe even a different country every day!

✨There’s no need to navigate car hire, buses or trains, unless you fancy a shore excursion.

✨There’s no need to pack, unpack and move between accommodation.

✨Once settled into your cabin you can relax, enjoy the adventure and get ready to tick multiple places off your bucketlist!

Tempted?!? Dm me for personalised cruise planning!🛳️

Cruises offer great value for money because in most cases everything is included, from your food, accommodation, transportation between destinations and both daytime and evening entertainment!

People tend to think that cruising is expensive, but when everything is taken into consideration, cruises tend to be much better value than comparable land-based holidays.

There are so many different cruise lines, and so many different ships, which means there is a cruise for every budget. Some even include alcohol, soft drinks, gratuities, shore excursions and even flights. Or you can set sail from the UK and avoid the need to fly at all! Plus some cruise lines offer free or discounted rates for children sharing a cabin with 2 adults.

Have you ever compared the price of a cruise with the price of an all inclusive holiday???

The kids are back to school focusing on their goals, giving you more time to focus on yours!

Make it a September to remember!

There is never a perfect time for anything, so the best time to start is always now!

You have what you need within you, if you surround yourself with the right people it will also be around you!

If you love what you do, you can still work hard, achieve great things and also take care of yourself, and your family!

Think about the things that truly matter in life, and make a plan to prioritise them!

Forget January, if you’re a parent - it’s our new (school) year now!!! ✨

There’s 4 months until 2025 - let’s get a head start!

Why does the last week of the summer holidays always feel so chaotic?!?

Instead of feeling stressed and wishing it away, try to embrace the chaos and treasure these moments because they fly by so fast!

And it’s so exciting for all the kids lucky enough to have school places to go to, because not everyone has that opportunity!

It’s also a great time for us parents lucky enough to get the respite that school provides to make plans and set goals for that child-free time!

And I know that all of you home schoolers can’t wait to get back to normality too, with quieter places to go to and home-ed sessions back up and running!

So, who wants to start something new in September that could change the way you spend your future school holidays!?!

Maybe you’d like to be able to do more day trips or take more holidays in the uk or abroad?

Maybe you’d like to earn an additional income so you don’t have to worry about expenses like school uniform, school trips, birthdays and Christmas?

Maybe you just want to be able to spend more time with your family?

Either way I can help you, so drop me a message and we can have a chat!
