This afternoon’s drop off is at Heathrow for a customer who’s escaping from the cold for a month or two. 😎☀️

Here are some fascinating statistics about Heathrow Terminal 5:

1. T5 can handle 30 million passengers per year.
2. The terminal covers 353,020 square metres, equivalent to 50 football pitches.
3. The total cost of constructing T5 was around £4.3 billion, making it one of the most expensive airport projects in the world at the time.
4. It took 19 years from conception to completion (planning started in 1989; the terminal opened in 2008). Actual construction lasted 6 years.
5. The terminal building features 5,500 glass panels, covering a total area of 30 acres.
6. T5’s baggage system is one of the most advanced in the world, capable of handling 12,000 bags per hour with over 11 miles of conveyors.
7. The short-stay car park has space for 3,800 cars, while the business car park holds 6,000 cars.
8. There are 175 lifts and 131 escalators throughout the terminal.
9. The structure required 85,000 tons of steel, enough to build 10 Eiffel Towers.
10. When it opened, T5 was the largest free standing building in the UK. It’s now the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre.

This morning’s early pick up is from The London International Cruise Terminal, located at the Port of Tilbury on the River Thames.

It also has a rich history as a gateway for maritime travel to and from London. Here are a few historical facts about this notable terminal:

Opening in 1930: The terminal was inaugurated in May 1930 by then-Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. It featured a large passenger landing stage constructed jointly by the Port of London Authority and the London Midland and Scottish Railway, complete with rail connections.

Role in Emigration: During the mid-20th century, the terminal served as a departure point for thousands of Britons emigrating to Australia under the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme, commonly known as the "Ten Pound Poms."

Empire Windrush Arrival: In 1948, the SS Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury, bringing one of the first large groups of post-war Caribbean immigrants to the UK, marking a significant moment in British multicultural history.

Post-War Decline and Closure: With the decline of ocean liner travel in the 1960s and 1970s, the terminal saw reduced activity and eventually closed.

Reopening in 1995: Capitalizing on the resurgence of the cruise industry, the terminal was reopened in 1995 as the London Cruise Terminal, offering services to the European cruise market.

Largest Ship Docking: In March 2022, the terminal welcomed Virgin Voyages' Valiant Lady, the largest cruise ship to have ever docked there, highlighting its capacity to accommodate modern large vessels.

Proximity to London: Situated just 22 nautical miles from Tower Bridge, the terminal is the closest deep-water cruise facility to central London, making it a strategic point for tourists visiting the capital.

Today it’s a drop off and pick up at Heathrow Airport. 🚕

Did you know……..? Heathrow Airport might never have existed if not for a 1925 emergency landing? Royal Air Force pilot Norman MacMillan spotted the flat farmland—perfect for a runway—and recommended it to aero-engineer Richard Fairey, who built an aerodrome there.

During WWII, the RAF took over the site, and by 1946, it transformed into a hub for commercial travel. What began as farmland evolved into one of the world’s most iconic airports, connecting millions to destinations around the globe.

The first passenger flight, using a converted Lancaster bomber called Starlight, took off for Buenos Aires on 1 January 1946. The journey took over 35 hours!

Five months later, London Airport—now Heathrow—officially welcomed its first passengers. Back then, the “terminals” were simple army tents, and wooden planks were laid on the ground to keep travelers’ shoes clean as they crossed the field to board their planes.

First Stansted airport pick up in 2025 and hopefully one of many.

Did you know?……..for 75 years, Stansted Airport has been a vital part of the local community.

What began as a World War II airfield has evolved into an international airport undergoing a multi-million-pound transformation. Over the decades, much has changed.

I've done a quick bit of searching to find some early photographs from its varied history up to the 1960’s

More to come when I’m next there……..🚕

Brandon often gets a bit of negative criticism when you pass through it but did you know it has an interesting historical past:

Ancient Roots: Brandon has a long history dating back to prehistoric times. Evidence of human activity in the area includes Neolithic flint tools and Bronze Age burial mounds.

Flint Industry: The town has been known for its flint mining since at least the Mesolithic period. Flint from Brandon was used for tools and weapons, and later for gunflints in the 17th to 19th centuries.

Roman Influence: During the Roman occupation of Britain, Brandon was an important site for flint production. Roman artifacts, including pottery and coins, have been found in the area.

Medieval Market Town: Brandon was granted the right to hold a market in the 13th century. This helped establish it as a significant local trading centre during medieval times.

Thetford Forest: Brandon is located near Thetford Forest, which was created after World War I to ensure a strategic reserve of timber. The forest is now a major recreational area and an important habitat for wildlife.

RAF Lakenheath: Near Brandon is the Royal Air Force Lakenheath, established in 1941. It is currently a major United States Air Force base, housing a significant number of personnel and aircraft.

Brandon Railway Station: Opened in 1845, the Brandon railway station is a historical transport hub. It played a crucial role in connecting the town to larger cities and facilitating the flint trade.

St. Peter’s Church: This medieval church, dating back to the 12th century, is a notable landmark in Brandon. It features a distinctive round tower, a characteristic of many churches in East Anglia.

Brandon Park: Formerly the grounds of a large country house, Brandon Park is now a public recreational area. The park and its surroundings are steeped in local history and are popular with residents and visitors.

Industrial Heritage: In addition to flint mining, Brandon had a thriving industrial sector in the 19th and early 20th centuries, including maltings, tanning, and a significant brickworks industry.
