SUNDOWNER MOMENTS #3

Sharing one of his favourite 'Sundowner Moments' in our Friday series is Andrew, our travel consultant who has travelled across and South East Asia👇

'During our stay in Chiang Mai, we paid a visit to Elephant Nature Park, a leading elephant rescue and rehabilitation centre set up by the esteemed elephant rights advocate Lek Chailert, that rescues and cares for elephants who were once subjected to unethical practices such as elephant riding and street begging.

We joined the Care for Elephants educational programme, in which we prepared food for and helped feed a small group of elephants, before joining them on a walk through the rainforest in their natural surroundings.

Being able to walk side by side with three of these amazing, gentle giants, seeing them being given a second chance in life and watching them do what comes naturally, like taking a mud bath in the river, all whilst taking in the surrounding natural beauty of rural Thailand is an experience we will never forget!'

SUNDOWNER MOMENTS #2

Sharing one of her favourite 'Sundowner Moments' in our Friday series is Charlotte, our travel consultant who has recently came back from Sri Lanka👇

'My time at Gal Oya was out of this world. It's such a special place, being the last great wilderness in Sri Lanka. Only four boats are allowed on the lake each day, which is the largest in the country. The islands are packed with trees full of birds living together in harmony – purple herons, nesting egrets, loads of ibises, and eagles perched at the top. Crocodiles slip off the banks and into the water below.

One evening, as Lolitha, the naturalist guide from Gal Oya Lodge, and I were leaving the national park by jeep, the sky began to turn pink and lilac. Lolitha stopped the jeep, and we stood on the edge, leaning over the canvas top. The sky became a brilliant neon pink and coral. We watched elephants standing on the islands, knowing they’d have to swim to get off. Just before the sun disappeared, I felt like I was witnessing pure magic – truly out of this world!'

We love Sri Lanka

A teardrop at the foot of India, it offers a brilliant variety of places set amongst breathtaking scenery. It's one of Asia's top spots for wildlife — visit Minneriya or Uda Walawe for elephants, Yala for leopards and sloth bears, and Sinharaja for birdlife. Discover ancient history in the Cultural Triangle and enjoy the misty hills of tea plantations by train or foot. Temples give insights into Buddhism, and the coast is lined with idyllic beaches, each with its own perfect weather.

It's always been one of Sundowner's favourites, so we asked our team why — slide left to find out what they had to say ->

If is on top of your list of places to explore, get in touch and ask us anything - we'd love to help you to discover this incredible country. Be warned, you will want to go back over and over 😊

SUNDOWNER MOMENTS #1

Sharing one of her favourite 'Sundowner Moments' in our Friday series is Cheska, our travel consultant in training who travelled to Borneo 👇

'It was my final day in the Kinabatangan River. We had spotted everything from crocodiles to proboscis monkeys, and every species of Hornbill in Borneo.

We had spotted a few orangutans way off in the distance and could just about make out a shape of orange fur through a pair of binoculars. But not the experience we were hoping for.

It came to our final cruise, and we were all desperate to see one up close. But our guide told us that it was unlikely one would be this close to the banks at that time of year. We finally started heading back to camp when our driver started shouting and pointing at a tree leaning over the river. Laying on one of the branches was a juvenile male orangutan! About 10 metres away. An incredible moment I will never forget!'

Is summer a good time to visit Costa Rica? The short answer is YES! We think it's one of those countries that can be visited all year round.

As the rainy (green) season kicks off in May, the landscape transforms into a lush paradise of vibrant greenery. The jungle comes alive & there's less dust in the air. Temperatures also feel cooler thanks to the moisture, offering a refreshing break from the dry season, especially at the beach where temperatures can soar up. With Guanacaste & the Caribbean side offering the sunniest beach options.

You can also expect less crowds, giving you the chance to truly enjoy the national parks, beaches, and activities without the hustle and bustle of peak tourist season. Plus, it's an opportunity to meet with the locals who are out and about, taking advantage of their country's beauty.

And the best part? Hotels often offer better deals and discounts during this time, making it a great budget-friendly option for those looking for a good deal (and we know the best offers!).

In the green season, rivers swell, waterfalls flow in full force, creating spectacular sights. Don't let rain forecasts deter you; often, it means sunny mornings perfect for activities with brief afternoon showers. Embrace the rain, because it adds to the lushness of the surroundings.

A bonus: the green season is prime time for experiencing turtle nesting and hatching in Tortuguero, as well as witnessing migrating whales on the Pacific side.

Our team have traveled to Costa Rica during this period and knows the best places to visit during this time. We have many happy clients who come back with not only great feedback, but memories that last a lifetime.

It can be a rewarding experience if you know what to expect, and plan accordingly so get in touch with us today to discuss your summer holiday to Costa Rica.

Perched on a slight rocky rise in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe sits the wonderful Deteema Springs Camp. You'll truly feel part of the untamed environment during your time here - you'll even go to sleep with the sounds of elephants splashing in the water hole. A true Sundowner moment!

This is one of our favourite camps - ☎️ us on 01273 923100 to talk to James who stayed here last year, or head to the following link to check out a plan that already includes a stay here: https://buff.ly/4ac3JlX 👈

Keep reading to learn more about what makes this camp so special, and what James thought when he visited last year...

"I loved Deteema! There is a great mix of luxury with authenticity, remoteness, and a great team. The tents aren't big, but they have a lovely design within the beautiful overall setting of the camp. I was there in December and had great elephant sightings and saw other wildlife like impalas, giraffes and warthogs - but I recommend you go in August-October for better game viewing. With the watering hole so close to the camp you have the chance to see some amazing wildlife".

Head out on game viewings with delightful staff like Simon who really know their stuff, or go on a walking safari if you're feeling brave enough! The only down side will be that you wish you could stay for longer!

Siem Reap is made up of bustling markets, pretty side streets, and floating villages. But venture out of the town, and you get to what Siem Reap is probably known most for. The Angkor Wat complex.

Caitlin spent the day touring different temples when she was in Cambodia a couple of years ago. “The images of Angkor Wat are legendary. However, I was more impressed by the other temples like Ta Prohm and Bayon. Ta Prohm is engulfed by the roots of gigantic trees, and seeing them grow out of the walls of the temple is sensational - it feels like something out of someones imagination instead of real life. And, the exterior of Bayon features numerous smiling faces that have been carved into the stone. We spent at least half an hour trying to count them all, but gave up when we overheard someone saying that an estimated number is around 200..."

There are many other temples in the complex, so the number you see is completely up to you. However, we recommend that you go to Angkor Wat for sunrise (if you don't mind the early start on holiday) before taking a tuk tuk and touring a few of the key others. Give us a ☎️ on 01273 923100 to find out which temples we think you should visit and to find out what else you can get up to in Siem Reap.

A huge Sundowner favourite, Garonga Safari Company gets everything right! Located in the Makalali Game Reserve, the camp is a perfect size for service that goes the extra mile - and to allow you to relax peacefully between safaris, as well as ensuring plenty of memorable safari moments! In fact, Garonga encourages you to indulge in activities that allow you to enhance your wildlife encounters and get close to the bush around you!

Garonga can be included in most South Africa holiday plans – click on this 🔗 to see how: https://buff.ly/4cZCVXX 👈

But, it’s not just the wildlife viewings that make a stay at Garonga so special. The team are incredible – from the staff at the camp who will take care of you like you are family, to the guides like Bongie and Norman who are fantastic at tracking down the animals, and making sure you are safe at the same time. And an experience that can not be missed is the ‘Sleep Out’ – a once in a lifetime experience where you can sleep high in the trees, with only the stars above you and the sounds of the bush around you. But if you’re not sure about staying out there for the whole night, book the secluded Bush Bath and wash under the stars instead!

This is how Garonga creates memories that will last a lifetime. Sounds incredible, doesn’t it?

"The magical Baobab trees of Tarangire National Park".

What an amazing shot from 'Here Is Tanzania'! Baobab trees are an iconic symbol of the African landscape! They can be seen in a number of African countries, but one of our favourite places to see them is in Tanzania. The unofficial “Baobab capital of the world" is Tarangire National Park, which is renowned, not just for it's incredible elephant population, but also for the vast number of Baobab trees that make the scenery so impressive!

🔗 Check out this holiday plan to Tanzania that includes a safari in Tarangire: https://buff.ly/3W7YteX

☎️ Our Holiday Designers have been lucky enough to visit, so contact us if you want to talk through some Tanzania holiday plans! Lucy was there last year - give her a call on 01273 923100.

And if you would like to find out more about these iconic giants, keep reading for some key points about them 👇

Appearance: Baobab trees are easily recognisable by their swollen trunk, which can often resemble a bottle or flask. They have thick, cork-like bark that helps them conserve water.

Longevity: Baobabs are known for their impressive lifespan, with some specimens believed to live for over a thousand years. Their longevity is aided by their ability to store large amounts of water in their trunk during the rainy season to sustain them through periods of drought.

Cultural Significance: Baobab trees hold significant cultural and spiritual importance for many African communities. They are often referred to as the "Tree of Life" and feature prominently in folklore and traditional medicine. In some cultures, it is believed that spirits reside within the hollow trunks of old baobab trees.

Uses: Baobab trees have numerous practical uses. The leaves can be eaten as a vegetable, and the fruit pulp is used to make beverages, jams, and other food products. Various parts of the tree have medicinal properties and are used in herbal remedies.

Our favourite legend: Legend has it that the Baobab tree was once proud and boastful. In punishment, the creator uprooted it and replanted it upside down. Thus, the baobab became the iconic "upside-down tree" we know today!

Get to the heart of the Costa Rican forest with a stay at Rio Perdido!

Hear what Sundowner team member, Kat, had to say about her stay here: "I loved Rio Perdido! From the breathtaking location to the service, wildlife and experiences on offer - Rio has it all without the feel of a large hotel, or being in a busy touristy strip. Amazing for couples, adventure seekers, or families alike. One of the highlights is the hot springs on the door step. The river passes the lodge and offers thermal volcanic water without having to go and pay for hot springs (such as in Arenal). I also absolutely loved the surrounding walks, hanging bridges and the sunset at the helipad overlooking 3 volcanoes! The wildlife was out of this world. We saw howler monkeys at the arrival hall as soon as we got out of our car. Sloths, hummingbirds, and so much more were seen from the casita terrace or dining room at the main building. I would definitely go back and stay again!"

Monkeys and a thermal river. What a combo! The natural hot springs entice you to soak up the endless variety of exotic flora and fauna that surround you. Framed by a unique forest in Bagaces County and nestled in the wilderness, Rio Perdido allows you to truly experience Costa Rica’s famous Pura Vida, and can be treated as a relaxing luxury stay with yoga and wellness. Or, take on some of the incredible activities that are available. This spectacular 1,500 acre reserve is designed to be in perfect harmony with its surroundings, and great care has been taken to not only make sure guests have a memorable experience, but to also ensure that this one-of-a-kind setting is preserved. A stay at Rio Perdido is nothing short of enchanting and gets fantastic feedback from both couples and families. ! If you would like to book activities, Monica is on hand to help - zipline through the canyon, head out on hikes, and give the exhilarating white-water tubing a try. Unwind with the free yoga on the cliff side yoga pods, or grab a massage - ask for the amazing Francini!

Whether you are looking to relax, enjoy the outdoors or a combination of both, then Rio Perdido is the place for you! To see how you can include a stay at Rio Perdido in your holiday to Costa Rica, take a look at this holiday plan: https://buff.ly/43QICDm and find out more about the property here: https://buff.ly/4cQ12by Or, give our team a call on 01273 923100 to talk it all through!

How many species of lemur do you think there are in Madagascar? Keep reading for the answer...

Found only in Madagascar, it is thought that these primates arrived on the island after being swept over from Africa on 'rafts' of vegetation. There are, of course, plenty of places you could see lemurs in Madagascar, but we recommend Andasibe National Park, Marojejy National Park, or Ranomafana National Park. Ranomafana was set up to protect the golden bamboo lemur in 1991, and for a unique experience, head to Andasibe and listen out for the Indri Indri lemurs who 'sing' to each other to communicate! To the human ear, 'singing' is a loose term, but it's a fascinating sound!

Fun fact! Lemurs use their teeth as combs - most primates groom themselves (or each other) using saliva-covered fingers, but lemurs have developed their own tools to keep their fur always spotless!

Do these furry little creatures intrigue you? Call us on 01273 923100 to begin arranging a trip to Madagascar, or check out our itinerary that takes you to the highlights of this beautiful country and provides plenty of lemur-spotting opportunities! https://buff.ly/4aLDIdg

And the answer to the question above? It's over 100! That's a lot of lemurs.

What makes a destination worth visiting? Take a look at Vang Vieng, one of the top Laos highlights.

Scenery - towering limestone peaks, lush green hills, and crystal-clear rivers. Tick.
Culture - fascinating sacred limestone caves nestled in the rainforest. Tick.
Activities - go for an adrenaline-fuelled zipline or a gentle kayak. Tick.

Rewind 5 years and it took over 10 hours to reach Vang Vieng from Luang Prabang. But now there’s the train. Built by the Chinese and opened in 2021 - it's fast, comfy, cool (ideal for travel through a hot country!) and the journey is beautiful. Call our team on 01273 923100 to discuss a trip to Laos that includes Vang Vieng - James, Hannah, Rhianna, and Caitlin have all been, and loved it! Or take a look at this Discover Laos Holiday plan to get you started: https://buff.ly/3vACH8I

*Sundowner’s Top Things to do in Vang Vieng*

KAYAKING - “The stand-out activity for our family was the kayaking. The paddling was gentle as the Nam Song River pushed us along. Every now and then was a minor “rapid” that we would race each other down. Passing a basking water buffalo in the centre of the cool water was a moment to remember. A perfect, harmonious family day.”

TUBING - "At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about sitting in a rubber tube, drifting down the river. But once we had set off, it was dreamy. It was one of my favourite afternoons, relaxing with nothing but the sounds of the water and wildlife in our ears, and watching as the beautiful scenery floated past."

HIKING - “I woke early and took my eldest daughter (age 14) to hike up to Nam Xay Viewpoint for views of limestone cliffs and paddy fields - and the perfect Insta photo opportunity sat on a motorbike overlooking a cliff. Thank goodness we didn’t wear flip-flops like some of the locals as the dirt track had us scrambling over boulders and grasping at branches to pull ourselves up. It was worth it.”

ALMS CEREMONY - “Luang Prabang is famous for its alms ceremony and this fame does slightly detract from the experience. The ceremony in Vang Vieng isn’t a tourist attraction; there aren’t any advertisements for it. It’s a simple part of daily life. I stood near Wat That before sunrise and silently watched from across the street. A beautifully gentle and spiritual start to my day.”

*Good to Know*

ZIP-LINING - “This is basic zip-lining. Flying just above the jungle is exhilarating. And I always love an opportunity to release a scream. However, the safety left a little to be desired and this is definitely one to take on at your own risk!”

BLUE LAGOON - “It was HOT when we visited in May. In fact, it’s considered low season it’s so hot. The swimming pools are like bath tubs so a chance to swim in fresh water was extremely welcome. However, it was busy and this detracted from the natural experience that I was looking forward to. Treat it as a lido to cool you down, rather than a nature experience, and your expectations will be met and you’ll love it!”

Felices Pascuas🐰 Pasaka Njema🌼 Selamat Hari Raya Paskah 🐣 Or, Happy Chocolate Day as some of our kids call it...🍫

The first chocolate Easter eggs appeared in Europe in the early 19th century, led by France and Germany. Cadbury introduced their Easter Eggs in 1875, tailoring French, Dutch, and German designs to suit Victorian preferences. Among the innovations imported from Germany was the 'crocodile' finish, which, by introducing textured patterns, concealed minor flaws in the surface; this is still used today by some manufacturers. Easter eggs soon became seasonal bestsellers. If you travel over Easter then you will be able to satisfy your urge for chocolate easter eggs in any country where there is a predominantly Christian population. That’s Europe, the Americas and many more.

Around 76% of Costa Ricans are Catholic, so Easter is a big celebration there! Traditions include creating carpets of flowers, or sawdust, that line the streets for different processions. You can also experience the weird world of Living Via Crucis where moments from Jesus' life in the lead-up to his crucifixion are reenacted. Or, if you would prefer something a little less intense than the last few days of Jesus’ life, then on Good Friday night, a silent procession with lighted candles takes place - encouraging reflection of the day.

Wishing you a wonderful long chocolate weekend whether you're home or abroad!

And if you fancy Easter overseas next year, we recommend Borneo, South Africa and, of course, Costa Rica. Call us on 01273 923100 to begin discussing your Easter 2025 holiday!
