"We completed St Oswald’s Way in May 2024.
All the accommodation was good, Beadnell Towers and Northumberland Arms were the best, the breakfast at Beadnell Towers was the best. Matfen High House was lovely and quirky as were the owners. One of our party left an item at the Antlers in Belford, the owner drove to Beadnell Towers to deliver it before we had even missed it which was good of him.
The longest, hardest day was from Rothbury to Kirk Whelpington which was the day the weather changed. We encountered rain, wind, sleet, bog, missing signposts and lots of cows, even our most efficient waterproof clothing couldn’t stand up to the Northumbrian rain we were soaked to the skin. Luckily the Angel of Corbridge had the heating on so we were warm and got most stuff dry overnight. We had a run in with a very bad tempered farmer at Clay Walls who, apparently is well known to the Foothpath Officer for the St Oswald’s Way who we met on the walk.
The bag transfer service was very efficient.
I would recommend the walk, there is a lot to see en route, castles, ancient ruins, churches – some of which are open for walkers for refreshments and masses of meadows full of flowers including orchids.
We hope to use Brigantes again in the future their organisation and information provided was excellent."
This 97 mile walk recalls the life of King, and later Saint, Oswald and simultaneously links Hadrian’s Wall to St. Cuthbert’s Way
