Our article about Galicia's Celtic origins has just been published in the latest edition of Geographical Magazine. The three articles that we've had published so far are available on our website here: https://spain-sailing.com/articles.html
We still have places to fill on our summer 2025 tours so please let us know if you're interested and we'll be able to offer some good discounts. We would like to get everything booked up for our first full season of tours of this wonderful bit of the world.

Who knew that Galicia in northwest Spain is one of the Celtic nations? Skipper Tom visited O Facho De Donon last week. This is one of many Celtic-built hillforts that are dotted all around Galicia. This particular one is a short walk from one of our favourite anchorages at Barra Beach (it's just the other side of the wooded hill on the left). A fascinating glimpse into the Celtic history of Galicia.
On Friday Geographical Magazine will be publishing our article about the Celtic origins of Galicia, then it will appear in the articles section of our website.

We have just added a new 'Articles' page to our website. So far we have written two articles, both of which were published in Geographical Magazine in 2024. One is about the geography of the area, and the other deals with the food of the region. In mid-February we will be having a third article published which discusses the Celtic origins of Galicia.
Don't forget that until the end of February we're offering a 20% discount on the remaining tours (discount code FEB20).

And while we were there last week Skipper Tom checked over the anchor mechanism. We anchored just off the beautiful wooded island of Tambo. You can see our home town of Combarro in the distance.

We're here in Combarro, Galicia doing some work on Marta. Skipper Tom is on the pontoon and that's a bit of Ed's foot you can see close up. We've replaced the VHF antenna on top of the mast and now the radio is much better!

We took our yacht Marta out this afternoon just to check everything over. She's absolutely fine and so was the weather!

This is the 12th century monastery at A Lanzada just along the coast from our home at Combarro Marina. We took this photo in October.
Don't forget that we're offering a 15% discount this month (code JAN15) for our summer sailing tours of the fantastic Rias Baixas area of North-West Spain's Galicia!
Our lovely yacht Marta is currently moored in the marina at Combarro and we hope to be lifting her out of the water later this month to clean her bottom. Photos will follow!

The Camino de Santiago has been a major pilgrimage since the discovery, in the 9th century, of relics of James the Greater. There are several different routes, some even beginning in Portugal and France. The origin of the Camino is the 'spiritual variant' which runs directly through our home 'town', the beautiful village of Combarro. When we go walking in the hills behind Combarro very often we are wished a 'buen Camino' or 'happy Camino' by Spanish tourists who have come to see the historic granite houses on the seafront. The picture shows a decorated wall just above the village. There are many such features and the route is very clearly marked and well known locally.

This beautiful vista is looking over our marina (at Combarro in Galicia, NW Spain) at the unmistakable outline of Tambo Island. Francis Drake visited it in 1589. He wasn't very popular in Spain at the time as it was the year following the destruction of the Spanish Armada!

Just taking a break from some odd jobs on our yacht Marta. It seems that there's always something that needs looking at! We plan to lift her out of the water for painting after Christmas. I'll post a photograph when that happens.

This is Tambo, a small island in the Ria de Pontevedra near our home marina of Combarro. It's nice to see some November sun!

In 2025 we're doing a series of 12 summer tours. We start and finish in Combarro and take in Baiona and the Cies Islands among other brilliant places.

This is the O Burato do Inferno cave on the island of Ons. You can hear the Atlantic pounding at the other end of the cave more than 130ft below!
Ons is a favourite place to anchor on our Rias Baixas summer sailing tours.

We've just completed our final Rias Baixas tour of 2024. Skipper Tom and our Costa Rican guests visited the Cies Islands, Baiona, Cangas, Vigo, Portonovo and of course Combarro. The photo shows Nacho looking pretty relaxed having just sailed under the massive Puente de Rande suspension bridge.
Sailing under the bridge you feel like the mast is bound to hit it! However, at 48m above sea level it's actually (and unbelievably) nearly 3 times higher than the mast.
They also really enjoyed visiting Vigo, which is a vibrant coastal city with the marina very close to the centre.

This is the Cafe Bar O parque restaurant near Baiona, Galicia. It serves only octopus (pulpo) on Sundays! It is very tasty and very popular, as you can see. Skipper Tom is hiding in there somewhere.

Octopus has been consumed in Galicia since ancient times. They grow rapidly and have a relatively short life span, and in recent times populations have increased. They are still caught using traditional small-scale traps and are a regular feature on the menus in Galicia.

We are delighted to say that we have confirmed our home-mooring place in Combarro's marina. That's 'Marta' on the outside pontoon (with the giant red arrow above us!). Combarro is a historic fishing village featuring classic Galician architecture. It's grown into a small town around the original village so there's lots to see and do. The wooded hills around the town are full of interesting paths and, most important of all, it's a great place from which to explore the Rias Baixas coast by sail!
