‼️YOU CAN'T TRAIN PAIN‼️

Over the course of my professional career I have encountered horses in all states of physical wellbeing.

I am not a medically or veterinary trained professional. However, I have a lot of experience in my own field and I can determine the difference between pain and brain based behaviour. Sometimes it's a mix of both and sometimes resolving the pain issue resolves the brain issue.

I am happy to work with any horse in any state of physical health providing that I'm fully informed of the situation so that I can ensure that any work is within the limits of what the horse is capable of.

I cannot diagnose physical issues however I can signpost you to the relevant professional if you don't have one already.

As an empathetic trainer I cannot in good conscience continue sessions with a horse if I suspect a physical issue may be present. This may mean that your sessions go on hold until the issue has been investigated.

I have experienced this on many occasions and I think on only 1 occasion was I wrong and there wasn't a physical issue, but I would much rather be wrong than left questioning.

I may request copies of body work reports, to speak to your bodyworker or confirmation from your vet that your horse is OK for sessions with me.

Open dialogue between practitioners I feel is very important to the welfare of the horse which I'm sure you'll all agree is top priority.

When you hit the right spot 🙌

Don’t forget that every fence you jump needs landing, and every thank ours forces through the landing gear… the forelimbs, thoracic sling, upper thorax and lower neck. All areas of vascular and neurological importance.

Let ‘em grow 🌱

Now we've all seen the pretty coloured diagram showing us the horses skeleton reaches maturity at different stages but in reality what does that mean.
Young horses don't grow upwards with much unity. The back end shoots up, then the front end catches up - repeat. During these growth phases your adolescent horses body can feel pretty out of sync. The ride, the brain, the trainability and performance all take a hit, inevitably upsetting the horse and making the rider question every life choice they've ever made. And usually a call to the back lady.
So what should we do..? As a body worker I obviously work on the body, I help the bits that hurt and help bring some balance back to the body. But the most help is often offered as advice. To back off, turn them away, give them time to grow and to be a horse for a while. Let the body mature, and also the mind. These young horses benefit as much from the periods they rest as they do from the (hopefully) short periods of training. The modern horse industry is driven by age classes and futurity. I understand the pressure riders and trainers must be under. But.... If you can afford to take it slowly with your young horse, take it slowly. Give them big holidays over the winter (who likes riding in the rain anyway). Stand your young horse up against a wall or stable and when you notice, like this one, they look like they're built a bit like a wheelbarrow, take some time off. Or if you prefer to keep them ridden - just lightly hack them a couple of times a week. Whilst they're so weak and downhill school work will be very challenging for them.
Practicing a bit of patience whilst they're young, should save you being forced to stay off your horse when their body (often prematurely) breaks down due to strain and overstrain.
If you'd like any advice just pop me a message 🤗

Scar tissue- soft tissue damage can result in areas of inelastic scar tissue. This scar tissue can set fascia patterns, which may translate to strength and mobility asymmetry (difficulty/weakness on one rein).
Regular body work can help you to identify problematic areas as well as minimise compensation patterns.
