River Creed Campaign update
A big thanks to all who have already supported the petition expressing the shared concerns of the Club and the Marybank & Maryhill community over the proposed site for the SSEN HVDC converter station development. The petition remains open and you can still record your support by clicking the following link.

Followers of the local news may also be aware the Stornoway Historical Society have launched their own petition, principally highlighting their concern in preserving the remains of the site of the historic Lewis Chemical Works also threatened by the potential development, but also expressing solidarity with the concerns of SAA and the Marybank & Maryhill community and we would invite you to consider adding your name to their petition if you have not already done so, through the following link.

And lastly
Whilst writing, members and visitors may be interested to learn that SAA have added their name to support lobbying of the Scottish Government through the Tay Ghillies Association for wider action to address the long-term decline in salmon stocks.
We have been asked to share the following link which we hope will be of interest in this regard. Cautionary note – the youtube video embedded in the webpage, contains images of damaged fish.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION RE THE RIVER CREED
You may well be aware from recent media activity that the SAA committee is very concerned over the current proposals by Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to build a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station on their "preferred" site just north of the River Creed. A recent SEPA declared "pollution" incident arising from sludge discharging into the river arising from preliminary contractor work has only increased concerns.
The scale of the development is significant (footprint roughly 3 times the Western Isles hospital site and as tall as the Lewis war memorial), and will stretch from close to the Dam Pool on beat 2 of the river to close to the residential area of Marybank and Maryhill whose residents are also very concerned as to the proposals and the detrimental impact on their homes and neighbourhood should the proposed site be used.
SAA have been in recent discussion with the Marybank & Maryhill Community Association and had a good exchange of views and shared each other’s concerns. Both groups, whilst accepting that the converter station does require to be built for the future good of the island, have agreed the proposed site at Creed North is totally inappropriate and have urged SSEN to reconsider their options for alternative sites for the HVDC station which we know exist.
We have also been in touch with all local councillors as well as the local MSP and MPs to share our concerns for seeking an alternative site for the station however individual members are encouraged to contact their local councillors and express their concerns. In addition, our name and relevant content has been added to a local online petition set up initially by the Community Association opposing the current "preferred" site and we would strongly ask everyone associated (local and mainland) with SAA to consider showing their support, if able, by adding their name to this petition by clicking here.

Another long standing member of the club has sadly passed away.
John Murdo was a keen salmon angler and used to spend a lot of his time fishing from the bank on Loch Clachan..... I'm sure a few red fellows went home in his bag over the years. 😉
SAA would like to send our sincere condolences to the family at this sad time.
RIP
This has been kept relatively quiet up till now but the cat is out of the bag.
These initial ground works were only to ascertain the depth of the peat.
Goodness knows what damage could be done if the plans to build this monstrosity goes ahead!
We love Stornoway
Stornoway Angling Association would like to send our sincere condolences to the family of long standing member Sandra Mackay who sadly passed away recently.
Pictured here is Sandra with the ladies club championship trophy which she won in 2022.

SAA would like to wish all our members both old and new a very Happy New Year! Although migratory fish were scarce countrywide this season, the little River Creed did ok all things considered. Here is regular angler Philip Blair enjoying a bit of Autumn sport. Information on our fishery, permits etc can be found by visiting syangling.com

My first day out for salmon in the 2023 season and it was action all the way with the fish taking really gently and my having real problems hooking them, and...
Loch Langabhat report
Overall it was a very poor season for anglers fishing from the SAA boat on the "Big Loch".
Total for the season was 14 salmon and 240 trout.
Night and day compared to last year.
The poor run of fish and extremely high water temperatures made fishing very difficult.
The first two grilse were landed on the 26th July by local angler Ivor Macdonald and visiting angler Pat Mcvey with fish of 3 & 6lbs both caught on tobys.
Keen junior angler Ben Macleod carried on the tradition of out fishing his dad by landing a 3.5lb grilse on the 6th August.
Donald Matheson had a good days fishing on the 11th of September landing 3 grilse to 6lb.
A notable catch worth mentioning was a well shaped, very plump 5lb brown trout caught by Robbie Bell.
The fish took a copper toby on the Harris shore.
Unfortunately the bad weather during the last few weeks of the season curtailed the trips.
Although it was a poor season, we all live in hope that next year will be better so we can get back up there again.
SAA
Firstly, a big thank you to all members who have already submitted trout and Creed catch returns for 2023. This is much appreciated – if this is you, please disregard this message.
With only a few days to go before the River Creed closes for the season, we would ask folks to let us have their returns as soon as possible, appreciating that a few hardy souls may wish to hold on for the final days.
As a reminder – trout returns are only required from those members fishing any of our listed trout lochs. A Creed return is requested from all season ticket holders.
Creed day ticket holders who may not have received the email containing the link for catch returns can use the options listed below or alternatively message details to this page or WhatsApp to 07810211308.
We would ask that the returns are made as early as possible, but in any event by the 20th October (now overdue) for the trout returns and the Creed returns by 11th November at the latest. We have a short timeframe to compile the Club figures so your help in achieving these dates would be greatly appreciated.
Returns can be completed and returned by email as an attachment sent to [email protected] either in pdf (preferred) or word format. Alternatively, you can simply write the information within an email to the same address.
Please do not use a return email to the current Clubmate address as attachments are not permitted.
Anyone preferring to send a paper return should post to SAA, 8a Aird, Point, HS2 0EU. Anyone without printer access or unable to update the forms needing a paper return sent out, can request one by replying direct to [email protected]

A couple of hard earned fish from Loch Langabhat for visiting angler Pat Mcvey and Ivor Macdonald.
The water temperature is still very warm after the June heatwave which seems to have turned the fish completely "off" all over the island.
Hopefully once it cools a bit the catches will improve.
SAA
Ben Macleod with a cracking salmon from Loch an Ois today on the toby.
Very well done young man! 👏
A couple of fresh grilse for Paul Macleod and a nice plump grilse for David "Rubber" Macleod.
Although the catches haven't been exactly prolific we are picking away.
Garry Macleod also had a fresh grilse from Loch an Ois so they are well spread out throughout the catchment.
There is heavy rain on the forecast for later on today so hopefully that will give the lochs a wee top up.
SAA
After months of drought conditions we finally have water!
Kevin Macneil braved the midges and nailed this tide fresh grilse in the Matheson Pool early on Monday morning.
Well done Kevin!

Can you help?
The Outer Hebrides Fisheries Trust (OHFT) are looking for accommodation for a full time seasonal assistant to rent from 1st July to end of September. The person is independent, self sufficient, has their own transport and will be involved in outdoor activities for the majority of the time (long days and weekends). They will be carrying out valuable work to enhance, conserve and promote the local salmon and trout populations in our islands which of course provides important benefits to those who live here. If anyone has a flat or a spare room to rent out for a few months then please contact Paul Hopper on 07736677625 or email [email protected] Thank you!”
