Thailand part 4..

Day 12: First day in Krabi (after we did washing🤣) we just chilled and went to the night market where we tried some of the local cuisine.. aka Lotty had a pizza 😂

Day 13: We travelled to a kayaking centre where we went down the river, visited a cave with wall paintings that had been there thousands of years and plenty of bats and the second cave that we could kayak through! Luckily we got back just in time for the storm! That night we went to the local sports bar where the owner kept giving us free tequila shots 🤕

Day 14: We went on a day trip to the Hong islands; we stopped at the first island for snorkelling and the second island for lunch, the viewpoint and sea swimming (warmest sea ever!). In the afternoon we went for a massage, had a maccies and then a group trip to the w**d and tattoo shops!

Day 15: We packed & left Krabi on the bus, dropped our backpacks off on route and carried on the journey to the next location.. Khao Sok National Park 🏞️

day 11.. a little late as we have gone from one 2 hour blackout (power saving) to three 4 hour blackouts a day so wifi is limited!

Yesterday we went on a morning game drive (5.30am 🫣) to see the sunrise and the changeover of the nocturnal animals, we didn’t see much except impalas, zebra, springbok, black spok and spring hare but it was a fascinating experience!

Our morning activity involved feeding the school children at the local school, we took rice and a chicken stew from the reserve and then stopped at the local shop to buy sweets, biscuits, crisp, soft drinks as well as bananas, apples and pears! We helped to serve the food and drinks and were then treated to a dance to show their gratitude 🥹 they were so talented and the drum they were playing on was actually a water container!

In the afternoon we were game counting, on this each week we count a different species as a conservation effort to make sure the population is healthy, this week was impala week. We counted 152! On the drive we also saw the whole family of elephants, the baby hippo out of the water & the two main lions, Zulu and Simba just chilling 🦁

the best work day for my last work day 🤍

day 10.. a little late as we have gone from one 2 hour blackout (power saving) to three 4 hour blackouts a day so wifi is limited!

Wednesday we started by helping the ranger feed the animals within the rehab centre including ostriches, geese, the monkey and the parrot. I got bitten by the monkey because he wasn’t satisfied with just bread🤣

We had no work planned as we went on a 10 mile hike, the views were stunning but it was hard work in the heat! Plus trying to get down that hill whilst avoiding venomous spiders 🫣

After we had a cool down in the swimmming pool (more like an ice bath) and then as it’s my last week we went on an evening drive and managed to see the baby hippo in the water and a family of elephants (which we got a little too close to 🤣)

day 9.. this morning was the first game drive of the week to introduce the newbies to the reserve and to see what else we could spot. as we drove past the hippo pond we noticed a third body and realised we had a baby hippo that has been born within the last 12 hours! as we carried on the drive the rangers spotted the lioness with her three cubs, they are a rare sight as they are usually hiding but it was lovely to catch sight of them & to say we have now seen everything on the reserve! we stopped 1/2 way through the game drive to have a walk around and see if we could find any prints/ bones/ skins which turned into a skimming competition.

this afternoon was more tree chopping of the invasive species so we can plant more of the native species within the reserve, we also took some back to use as firewood! this evening was the most spectacular sunset, we danced with the chefs after dinner and then had a bonfire 🤍

the time is going too fast 🥹
ps I actually find the cat here quite cute 😳

day 7 & 8, I thought I would combine as we didn’t do that much yesterday; we had breakfast, had a look round the shops, found a massive spider and then did an easter egg hunt once back at the reserve!

today we went onto the reserve this morning to plant some trees that we took clippings of last week and potted. we had to be careful on the reserve as during the night before three poachers were spotted on the land by the anti poaching team, they had caught one but two were still on the reserve so we had helicopters, dog patrol team and the anti poaching trucks driving round with thermal imaging looking for them! while on the reserve we saw giraffe and our first sighting of Rhino, we couldn’t get too close though as they are very nervous due to being poached a few years ago and ultra territorial due to breeding season.

this afternoon we were fence trimming and removing the long grass from the fence line but I didn’t partake as I wasn’t feeling 100%! by this evening I felt better so we went out and did some star gazing 🤍

can’t believe I’ve been here a week already 🥹

day 6.. a little late.. today we went quad biking around the valley and then after we were meant to go horse riding but it was called off due to the rain so we went shopping round the local town instead, some lovely surfing type shops! in the evening we went to a Greek restaurant and joined in with the plate throwing 🇬🇷xx

day 5.. we left the reserve for our weekend getaway in Jeffrey’s bay 🏝️ by the time we got here we settled into the hostel, went and had lunch, explored the shops and then went for a walk down the beach at sunset 🥰

we’ve got some exciting activities tomorrow! another magical day 💕🇿🇦❤️

day 4.. this morning we woke up, had breakfast and then went to our first work task of the morning, tree chopping. we drove through the reserve seeing the lions still protecting their carcass, zebra, giraffes, elephants, wildebeest, springboks and warthogs to get to the area where the black water tree (native to Australia) has taken over, 1.5 hours later we had nearly fully cleared the area!

the temperature today was 37*c so we all escaped into the pool after lunch for a quick cool down before we went game counting- driving round the reserve counting the number of each animal species we saw as part of their conservation. on the way back to camp the safari truck broke down in front of the pride of lions (slightly terrifying) but they managed to start it and then again in front of the zebras and we all had to get out and push. we tried termites and actually found they do taste of mint, the acid in the termites reacts with the soil to create different tastes, sometimes lime, orange, mint and even peanut butter. we had an astronomy lesson with ranger Kieran and during the blackout identified the first snake we saw, a puff adder, the snake that causes the most deaths in Africa per year.

another magical day ❤️🇿🇦

** warning gory picture**

day 3.. this morning we got our daily briefing of what work tasks we would be doing for the day. morning work included touch farm and this afternoon fence maintenance.

touch farm involved feeding all the various animals including Monica the parrot, Marcel the monkey (a definite friends theme going on!), the ostriches and the geese and then onto maintenance work of clearing the w**ds away from the duck pond.

this afternoon we helped with clearing the fence lines as the grass, trees and w**ds are growing up the fencing and shorting the electric fencing, only negative of this was seeing my first wild snake 😳 Luckily we got off early so all went for a quick cool off in the pool before sneaking into the game reserve at sunset to see the zebra the lions had killed earlier that day & even managed to see the hippos too 😍

Day 2 … this morning we went on our first game drive and saw impalas, a jackal, more zebras, black wildebeest, forest elephants, a giraffe, blue wildebeest & warthogs!!

This afternoon we explored the reserve and found the monkeys that live here! We had a tour around the rehab centre within the reserve, learning about the tigers, lions, cheetahs and why they were there. We went cactus chopping on our first work task, clearing the cacti and removing roots as they have spread out of control and to make more of an area for grazing animals.

Such an incredible day 🇿🇦❤️
