Aren’t Facebook memories the worst!?
6 years ago I was on the breathtaking island of Aruba with one of my best friends. If you ever done the Caribbean, but not Aruba, you’re missing out. It’s absolutely stunning, extremely safe and so lively. Plus, as it’s out of the hurricane belt the constant breeze from the trade winds makes the high heat bearable.

The trip was an educational as a Tourist Board exclusive, which I won, but they really went out of their way and showed us everything Aruba has to offer. It’s on my list of places I MUST return to. It was one of the best trips I have EVER had. Also, if you do wanna go give me a shout as we did an intense site visit to the hotels on the island so I’m full of knowledge.

Tonight I’m sat with a cuppa watching Friends…. How times change 🤣

I’m off to spend some time with my other half. Hoping the weather turns out nice! I’m also going to see a certain girl group in concert this weekend (guess who 😂) but I’ll be back to work on Tuesday!

It’s a miserable weather day here in the North East but Holland Americas Nieuw Statendam has popped into the Port of Tyne anyway. She’s currently on a one way trip from Copenhagen to Reykjavik and is taking in a few British Ports as part of her route.

I last saw Nieuw Statendam in Copenhagen last year when I was sailing on the Disney Dream and she was docked alongside us. I’ve never sailed with Holland America but will stick them on my to-do list.

I’m back home today, but thought I would share something amazing I did on the last day of my trip on MS Balmoral.

Bridge Tour and Galley Tour.
Now, these types of tours are not always available with every cruise line and if they are it’s always something you should book in advance before boarding as they sell out extremely quickly.

The bridge tour was conducted in the morning and we had to be there 9.20am prompt as, understandably, once you’re in the bridge you stay in til the end or once out you can’t get back in. Balmoral is steered by a joystick no bigger than my little finger - absolutely mind blowing. As expected there is masses of screens and equipment which is required for Navigation and safety. I was lucky enough to meet the officers and also got a chance to sit in the Captains Seat, which is actually terrifying as I was scared I was going to knock something I shouldn’t. Looking back I should have discreetly knocked the steering 180 degrees back to Norway.

The Galley Tour was conducted in the afternoon by the Head Chef. There is actually 3 Galleys, 2 of which are connected and a separate Crew Galley. We also got to visit the provisions area. The Head Chef had 87 staff underneath him, that’s an awful lot of manpower to keep everyone fed - mainly me to be honest 🤣. The Galley is split into small areas, each with staff members responsible for a certain type of food (Pastry, meat, fish, Bread, Soup, Pasta etc. Fred Olsen are the only cruise line who still make all bread and pastry products 100% from scratch. The work that goes into keeping us fed is mind blowing and gives a better understanding as to why Gratuities are paid to ALL staff, as without these guys there wouldn’t be any food. Afterwards we had a private tasting session in the MDR.

I also got onto a behind-the-scenes tour of the Laundry and Crew Areas but due to the confidential nature of the areas photography wasn’t allowed.

Yesterday Balmoral was docked in Ålesund.

The weather was abysmal. Welcome to Norway 🤣
Although it was dry and the temperature was mild, there was dense fog that meant seeing anything was impossible on sail in. I had booked a tour to the scenic islands of Giske and Godøy. These islands are situated off the coast of Ålesund and are typical Norway. Small and rugged with houses dotted around and a low population. They’re connected by tunnels which go down as far as 160m below the seabed - quite scary haha. The islands have rugged coastlines affected by storms and surprisingly, Hurricanes.

We unfortunately couldn’t see beyond a few yards on the trip for most of it but the sun did make a small appearance in the afternoon whilst I was strolling around the town so I could get a picture of the snowcapped peaks.

Today has been AMAZING.

Olden is my absolute favourite Norwegian Port.

The hike through Briksdal National park was a challenge, but the 22 degree weather helped, the weather has been glorious today.

We passed waterfalls, steep mountains and ended up at the base of the Glacier. I’ve never seen anything like it. The sheer size of it was mind blowing and there was some great photo opportunities.

Once back on the ship I went to a wine tasting session. After all that strenuous exercise it was well deserved if you ask me.

I’m trying the Speciality dining tonight - Asian fusion cuisine. Catch you later
