Sussex Estates and Facilities are pleased to announce that we have successfully gained ‘Green Flag’ recognition for our Campus.

This recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark for the management of recreational spaces in the UK and around the world.

Thank you to our Grounds Team for all of their hard work in ensuring the campus is clean, beautiful and thriving all year round!

Comments received from the audit include:

* Well Maintained and Clean
“The site was very clean indeed. Commendations for the total lack of chewing gum litter.”

* Environmental Management
“It is clear that SEF have strong and clear aspirations to make a real difference to the EM of campus with some exciting plans ahead . The use of vinegar as a herbicide was novel and effective”

* Biodiversity Landscape and Heritage
“The visit did clearly show the intent of SEF to respect and improve the campus landscape and heritage. The relationship with the research groups for Biodiversity benefit was also clear to see.”

* Community Involvement
“The University has a thriving community and appears to have strong staff /student/research links which only benefit the campus landscape .The allotment project is a fine example of this involvement. We also saw local school children visiting the campus which can only help promote community links. The boundary walk should also provide this sort of benefit. The whip planting project results were clear to see”

* Healthy, Safe and Secure
“An active and visible protection service was noted. Plenty of open areas for informal physical activity (although little seen) and a play area for children was a good addition .lighting columns seemed plentiful and generally open aspect encouraged use and feelings of safety “

We at SEF would like to offer a big thank you to the University of Sussex for inviting us to the Staff Party, which took place last week.

A team from SEF took part in the "Totally Wiped Out Tournament" and had a brilliant time getting soaked in the sunshine.

Others joined the party throughout the day and enjoyed all of the festivities arranged by the University's fantastic Events Team.

Feedback received was that the day really improved staff morale and gave staff the chance to meet colleagues from the University, that they may not have had the chance to meet previously.

Compliment of the Month: Johnny Parish - Central Zone Buildings Manager

A huge thanks to Johnny and his team for working hard in running the Central Zone and putting in the extra to make staff, students and visitors happy.

In May, the rainbow flag was flying high on campus to mark that the UoS is an official partner of this year’s Brighton & Hove Pride festival.

Ms Caroline Lehany, Head of Alumni Relations, Graduation & Corporate Events, sent her special thanks to Johnny Parish for all his help with putting up the flag and applauded him on being ‘the star of the whole story’.

The vice-chancellor Adam Tickell, explains: “The University has always valued diversity and equal rights. We’re supporting Brighton Pride because we stand for what Pride stands for – we both want to change things.”

Sussex staff and students will be joining the festivities on Saturday 5 August, and the University will have a float in this year’s Pride parade.

Pevensey 1 - The School of Psychology

The Academic Cleaning Manager arranged a Back to the Floor Day starting at 4am with two cleaning operatives scrubbing the floors, taking away the built up dirt that had been there for many years.

The cleaning team cleaned the upholstery on the sofas and the carpet on the lower ground floor was washed.

As you can see from the below photographs, this area is much more inviting now

Compliment of the Month:

Department: Cleaning

‘‘We wanted to feedback how excellent Jesus Ramirez and his cleaning team have been since we moved back into the Service Centre in Shawcross.

They have dedicated a particular cleaner, Aida Gutierrez, to our building and she has been an amazing asset to us. She is punctual, friendly, conscientious and hardworking – remaining cheerful even when the work she needs to cover is quite overwhelming, such as following a long weekend when students have been in unsupervised for several days, leaving significant food and drink mess.

Jesus and Dario Torres have checked back with us regularly to make sure everything is as we would like it and have responded swiftly when we have requested extra hours. All three of them are a pleasure to work with.”

Emma Redfern, IT Service Centre Manager.

In December during a SEF Christmas event, Aida was awarded for the great job she does on the cleaning team. Well Done Aida and thank you for your consistently hard work!

In April 2017, SEF began repairing a water leak on campus at the Norwich House Road zebra-crossing. This will reduce lost water by approximately 1,642m3 per day, which is thought to be in excess of 50% of the total water leaks on campus.

The amount being lost every two days was the equivalent to the volume of water in an Olympic sized swimming pool! This repair will enable SEF to work with the University to start to recover historic waste water costs and is expected to have an annual saving of £1.4m.
