So excited to be making the awards for this years international film festival!! 😍

This is the 23rd edition of the festival which will be held on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th February - a 2 day celebration of some of the best short films around!

The festival showcases creativity, diversity and variety. It nurtures new and emerging talent through selected screenings, commissions, and their famous 48 Hour film challenge!

You can buy individual tickets or a Festival pass which gives you access to almost every event at the festival for £25, this works out at around 50p per film, or 40p if you’re a member, student or under 25!

Driftwood sign for the wonderful 🌊

Engraved table numbers for annual celebration! These little beauties were made from sustainably sourced birch ply in our Devon workshop 🌳 🌊

This years celebration event is nearly here! It will
take place on Saturday, 9th November, from 5.30pm – 11pm 💙

The evening will be dedicated to celebrating the young people the Wave Project support, as well as the incredible individuals and partners who make their mission possible.

All proceeds from the event will go directly towards supporting children and young people in improving their mental health – helping to continue the work that transforms lives.

Tickets are £50 per person and include a welcome drink, a 3-course meal and live music from The Gleaves.

Here is Exeter based personal trainer, Tom Burridge sporting his medal design!

As with all our medals, Tom’s were made in our Devon workshop from sustainably sourced wood🌳
They are a great eco conscious momento for celebrating sporting attendance/achievements or any other event or awards 🌟

Wooden Skateboard Coffee signs 🛹 ☕️

These are a couple of examples of the skate decks I engraved as signage for the many coffee shops who use the beautiful coffee roasted by 🧡

Sarah and Matteo and their Curator team embrace the time-honoured tradition of wood roasting, using only wood from felled and fallen trees from the local area. Unlike gas, wood contains natural moisture—ranging from 12 to 15% and helps to extend the initial drying phase of the roasting process. This allows them to preserve the beans’ natural oils and compounds, bringing out each coffee’s distinct flavour profiles. 🪵

The result is a full-bodied, smooth coffee with reduced acidity making it versatile for both espresso and filter brews.

And it’s sublime! 👌

Amazing few days adventuring! Thanks so much to and my new pals. The highlights included the most incredible storm I’ve ever witnessed, the views of the Pyrenees from my tent, the belly laughs, the cheese and the endless cuddles from Junior the 10 year old puppy/soulmate, oh and winning a laminated chorizo medal.. but that’s another post!

Soothe Stones ✨

Aka wooden worry stones.. why am I making worry stones?

A few months ago, I went through some life-changing events in my personal life. Everything felt a bit chaotic, there were a lot of changes I had to make and this all felt a bit overwhelming and lead to some mild anxiety as I tried to work my way through it.

I share a workshop with the wonderful and had beautiful wooden offcuts available from Lloyd’s work, the Soothe Stones pictured are made from the remnants of Sapele wood from some stunning sash windows that Lloyd recently made.

I decided to create Soothe Stones from the offcuts because this would enable me to keep the scraps in use and turn them into something beautiful and useful. It also allowed me to create a tool to help people manage anxiety and worries.

So, I started by working out some designs to etch into the wood, then I shaped the scraps into these pocket-sized pieces and used my laser to engrave them.

It’s an amazing feeling to have recovered waste materials and kept them in use by turning them into a tool that aids mental health.

Walnut and maple trophies with engraved inscriptions and gold inlay stars made for the Exeter College Awards 2024 💫

It was a pleasure making these and a real honour.

The trophies were presented at student awards ceremony which was attended by 180 guests and was an evening dedicated to celebrating the students amazing achievements.

Huge congratulations to the students and to Exeter College for organising such a wonderful event ✨

Happy Birthday to my wonderful partner in shenanigans, Pia!

It’s been a hectic year for Pia - going full time with her already very busy job has meant she’s had to take a step back from Laser + Grain but she is still very much supporting me in keeping the business going and growing! So, needless to say weekends and evenings of fun times have been sorely lacking!

Thank you for all you do, Pia…Effie and I love you to these beautiful mountains and beyond! x ps sorry for giving you covid for your birthday 😬

Meet Pia and I’s van, Yewwy (so-called because we do a lot of them on our road trips 😂)

Yewwy was our inspiration for starting Laser + Grain.

When we were converting Yewwy, we came across the common stumbling block of how to to make furniture fit a van - as many of you have no doubt discovered yourself, they are not exactly filled with right angles 😂 so it’s pretty difficult to achieve a functional space while also achieving a beautiful finish. So, hence why I bought a laser to start making made to measure furniture panels and wooden switch panels for vans, and the rest is the last 4 years of L+G history!

In comparison to many of our van converter customers vans, Yewwy is pretty humble, but she’s perfect for us and we can’t wait to get a few days of adventures in her over the festive season 🎄

As we start to wrap up for the year, we’ve been taking a trip down memory lane, reflecting on our year at Laser + Grain HQ

Self taught about, well, everything in this business, we do feel like we are on the back foot at times, but we’re really proud about how the year has gone. Excitingly, we’re getting returning customers and clients, which is always a nice pat on the back, so thank you!

The increasing range of products we’re making feels really noticeable at this time of year, when we pull everything together for Christmas markets - as stressful as they are to prepare for, they’re a great showcase of what we do, and we love the chance to meet lots of friendly faces.

Working alone in our little workshop in rural south Devon can be a pretty lonely experience at times, but we have been lucky enough to make some incredible mates through our little business, which makes it all the more worthwhile.

Anyway, that’s probably enough of a ramble from us. To our followers old and new, thanks so much for being here, we genuinely appreciate it.

‘Bonsai and rising sun’ ☀️ symbolising positivity and hope. It’s been a total pleasure engraving @gracietrottdesigns artwork. This is the second piece that Gracie designed specifically for this board 🥰 Check out my previous reel to see the first piece piece - an absolutely beautiful jellyfish design. The bellyboard belongs to the @waveprojectuk who asked if I would engrave it for them 🌊 Gracie was the perfect person to collaborate with on this project as she not only produces stunning designs but she specifically focuses on designing for positive impact. 1 in 5 children in the UK struggle with their social, emotional or mental health. It’s #worldmentalhealthday day and therefore the perfect day to introduce you to a venture I’ve been working on for @waveprojectuk 🌊 The Wave Project is very close to my heart - they are nationwide surf therapy charity who offer surf therapy programmes to young people who experience a range of physical and mental health issues, social deprivation social isolation. Young people attending the 6 week courses are supported through surfing to build confidence and self-esteem, develop resilience and make friends 🏄 The Wave Project asked me to engrave this bellyboard, so I set about on a search for an artist to collaborate with 💫 someone who was not only incredibly talented but who also has a close affinity with the Wave Project’s values.. @gracietrottdesigns is that person! Gracie is a multidisciplinary designer based in beautiful Gwithian in Cornwall. Gracie centres her design work around positive impact and her work is beautiful! 🤩 Gracie’s created this jellyfish artwork which symbolises resilience and change, two elements that are synonymous with the Wave Project. Thanks so much for such a beautiful piece, Gracie! Also! I’m excited to say I have completed a second engraving also designed by Gracie, so watch this space for the big reveal 👀 I’ll be sad to see this board leave the workshop but I’m also excited to see what the Wave Project have planned for it! The magic of sanding ✨ I have a love/hate relationship with this element of my work. Got to love it today though, with this result! This is a batch of switchplates for Tom and Cait @contourcampers. The plates have a really deep engrave which produces a lot of residue during the lasering process, but after giving it some elbow 💪 with the orbital sander the design is clean and bold #madeindevon #devonmakers #laserengraver

Magical weekend on Dartmoor 🌳✨ I took my Mum on an adventure down memory lane, back to where she grew up. She’s a ‘Chuggie-Pig’ (born in Chagford) We went adventuring across the Moor on the hunt for ‘the rock with the hole in it’. What is a Soothe Stone? Basically, a wooden version of worry stones, which are small smooth stones with a thumb indent that are known for bringing anxiety relief and self-soothing during times of heightened stress or as a comfort in everyday life. The idea is that you rub it between your forefinger and thumb or fidget with it when you’re feeling nervous or overwhelmed. They are basically a physical touchpoint for letting go of our worries and anxieties. I’ve made these out of sapele wood, they are so smooth and tactile and create a wonderful feeling of reassurance… a ready-made comfort tool that you can have tucked away in your pocket for whenever you need it. I’ve created a few designs, each engraved and carved into beautiful sapele made from wood offcuts from myself and @lloydbroughton workshop. Massive thanks to Lloyd for his help in getting my Soothe Stones out to the world and thank you to the wonderful @leahhoughtalingwoodworking for the inspiration.
