"…Thank you for putting together yet another amazing trip…(our guide) looked after us very well, so please thank them on our behalf, they were a delight. We are glad that the original guide of choice decided that he didn’t want to guide us as (our guide) is an exceptional naturalist. He has great knowledge, not only of the Lynx and birds but also plants, trees, bushes, insects and Geology. He made our trip very special by amending our programme several times to take in different sites and bird watching at different and better times. He was also most attentive, organising an excellent lunch on the day we transferred to Tres Cantos and brought breakfasts for us when the second hotel let us down, and lunchtime pizzas when we stayed out all day to watch the Bee-eaters at their busy time.

…Hotel La Caminera was excellent. The views from the hotel were wonderful. The rooms and service were excellent with amazing bathrooms, as was the food and general ambience of the place. We would certainly recommend its use to others…
..We were very lucky with our wildlife sightings and the local guides at all venues were most helpful. At Penalajo Estate we couldn’t have got off to a better start. On the first morning around 9am, a female Lynx ran across the track in front of us followed by ……. 3 cubs (around 2 months old). They settled down just behind some bushes but with the female facing out into the open. The cubs made brief appearances out into the open. After a while the female disappeared, coming back into view carrying a rabbit and they headed off up the track but returning a little later. The local guides were amazed. One – they had not been seen by anyone before us and had not been picked up on the camera traps! Two – they were early in the season. Certainly they were not seen by anyone else for a couple of days at least. We had a bonus view of a Lynx sitting in the window of the derelict farm on our way back at lunchtime."

We now offer a selection of small group tours to Botswana, arguably Africa's greatest safari destination. The quality of its wildlife viewing, premium lodges and private reserves can often come at a great cost, but these small group tours that use comfortable tented accommodation, provide a more affordable option for those wishing to experience a safari holiday in this phenomenal wildlife destination.

We recently had clients return from a trip to Borneo and they sent back some very kind feedback. We're delighted they got such good wildlife sightings, some of which is included in their photographs here, including; marbled cat, leopard cat, proboscis monkey and western tarsier. They were booked on our tailor-made tour: 'In Search of Borneo's Rarest Mammals with Private Guide', found here https://buff.ly/3JOitvZ

"This was our 11th consecutive wildlife trip with Reef and Rainforest, that in itself speaks volumes. As our interest in the natural world has steadily increased so have our demands particularly with regard to itinerary planning. Reef and Rainforest have never let us down delivering some truly magical experiences and wildlife sightings over the years. This trip was one of the best, we observed well 4 out of 5 cat species, 9 out of 10 primates and 6 out of 8 Hornbills. In all 44 species of mammals were recorded and numerous birds and reptiles. Be prepared to go nocturnal to get the best out of your visit, Borneo is a truly magical island to visit with some wonderful and rare wildlife. The accommodation throughout the trip was good, the guiding was exceptional and the food was of a very high standard. Thank you, Jonathan, and all at Reef and Rainforest, we look forward to hopefully travelling with you again in 2025."

Join our small group tour to Northern Madagascar this October! This expertly curated itinerary is led by the superb local guide, Daniel Razafimandimby, who will show you some of the lesser known parts of Madagascar's wildlife-rich north.

A group tour is perfect for solo travellers in particular, enabling friendships to forge with like-minded people. Each member of the group are collectively there to experience the 'Great Red Island' and its absolute treasure trove of endemic species. Duos are of course welcome too and a wide spectrum of ages are encouraged, to help promote a camaraderie that can make a trip like this even more memorable.

You'll have a chance of spotting multiple species of lemur, including black and white ruffed lemur, eastern woolly lemur, Goodman's mouse lemur, diademed sifaka, Crossley's dwarf lemur, bamboo lemur, crowned lemur and Sanford's brown lemur.

The itinerary for this guided tour also includes the incredible opportunity of snorkelling with whale sharks. Look out for green turtles too and head offshore by boat to search for breaching humpback whales that have congregated to breed and nurse their newborn calves.

The tour begins in Antananarivo on 16th October. Please view the following link for full details https://buff.ly/3J3MVBJ , or give us a call.

Some more photos from long-time repeat client Scott Hyman, from his recent tour in Kenya with us. Note that the second image features black rhinoceros, followed by white rhinoceros in the third image.

*Black rhino have a more pointed/hooked upper lip and also a larger rear horn that can potentially be longer than the front horn. For white rhino, the front horn is predominantly longer than the much shorter second horn.

Thanks (instagram) for the great snaps! Give him a follow for more wildlife photography.

East Africa's wealth of predators!

Brazil's biomes...

Even though South America's Andes mountain range does not fall into any of Brazil's colossal 8.51 sq. km (the fifth largest country in the world), it's mountainous influence is felt throughout the country's six biomes; Amazon, Cerrado, Caatinga, Pantanal, Atlantic forest and Pampa.

Factors such as drainage, weather patterns and regional climate, all strongly influenced by the Andes, have helped to form the patchwork pattern of ecosystems in Brazil, and driven its rich plant and animal diversity - the most biodiverse on our planet.

Speak with our country specialist about creating a Brazil itinerary, that seeks out the best of its ecological riches!

Our director, Alan Godwin, has recently returned from Sri Lanka, where he visited Kumana National Park and got these great shots! He arrived just after the rains, with lush greenery, majestic trees, grassy plains with wildflowers, rain-filled pans and abundant wildlife.

Compared to most of Yala and even Wilpattu, Kumana is much less busy and the wildlife much more in evidence. It’s difficult to get to and accommodation is limited, which has helped retain its relative isolation.

Alan had six leopard sightings in three days, mostly from the only jeep present. He encountered plenty of other mammal, bird and reptile species in good numbers, including elephant, wild boar, wild buffalo, crocodiles, monitor lizards, many raptors and storks and, of course, beautiful bee-eaters and kingfishers.

There are also miles of deserted Indian Ocean beaches and sand dunes, and ancient cave sites revealing bygone scripts carved into the rock face.

We will be introducing a new Sri Lanka tour, with Kumana as its centrepiece, onto our website very soon.

The weird and wonderful wildlife of Borneo!

This is a five-star wildlife holiday destination, with iconic and endemic species in absolute abundance, however, its forests are in a precarious state. We carefully research, inspect and select the locations, reserves, guides and accommodation options at all of our destinations. You can take comfort in the knowledge that your travels are directly benefiting some of the world’s most threatened ecosystems while helping local communities develop in a sustainable and environmentally non-destructive way.

Speak with our Borneo specialist for more information.

The Galápagos Islands are one of the most unique wildlife holiday destinations in the world. Its high level of endemism is an evolutionary response to the extremely remote location. The incredibly nutrient-rich waters support seabirds in their thousands, extraordinarily odd reptiles and graceful marine mammals. We can help you plan a tailor-made itinerary to explore this magnificent archipelago. Please feel free to get in touch with our Ecuador specialist.

Peru is an absolute bounty. Few places beat it for its variation of landscapes and habitats, the colossal biodiversity that follows, and its well preserved historical sites and rich culture.

Our Director, Alan Godwin, is currently out in Sri Lanka researching some locations. He has spent the last few days in Kumana National Park. When 'leopard' and 'Sri Lanka' are mentioned in the same sentence, the prestigious Yala National Park comes to the fore.

However, neighbouring Kumana National Park receives a fraction of the number of visitors and jeeps each day that the increasingly frenetic Yala does, and this can make for a much more enjoyable experience to many people. The question is, what are your chances of spotting leopard there?

Well, he has reported back to us that he had six leopard sightings in just a few game drives! Water Buffalo and Asian Elephant also featured heavily. We will share some of Alan's other findings and sightings once he has returned to Devon.

20/02/2024

Botswana's predators play a crucial role in maintaining the landscapes of the Okavango, Chobe and Kalahari regions. Key species include lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs. These predators are essential for controlling the population of herbivores such as antelope, zebra, and wildebeest. Predators help prevent overgrazing, of particular importance to arid regions like the Central Kalahari with its sparse vegetation cover. The diversity and health of populations of predators in Botswana makes it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts looking to observe these apex carnivores in their natural habitat.

Take a look at our destination page for Botswana https://reefandrainforest.co.uk/destinations/botswana . Our country specialist has listed some highlights, as well as some of our itineraries that we think ensure you get the best out of a trip to this phenomenal location.

Simon Reeve's Wilderness series concluded on Sunday night with another absolutely smashing episode, this time based in the Kalahari Desert of southern Africa.

Vast, unspoiled and wildlife-rich, you could experience this phenomenal region from within Botswana, Namibia, or South Africa.

Living alongside the hunter-gatherer Bushmen, are African wild dogs, lions (including the unique black-maned males), elephant and leopard. Hundreds of bird species thrive in this challenging environment including ostrich.

We can highly recommend watching Simon Reeve's Wilderness episode about South East Asia's Coral Triangle, aired on BBC Two last night.

Encompassing an area that includes thousands of tropical islands, in the region shared by Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, the coral triangle has some of the best reefs in the world, an ecosystem that is rapidly diminishing. Our country experts know this region well, and we've got some super accommodation and itinerary options available.

If you want to see pumas, these next few months are an ideal time. From the Southern hemisphere summer through to autumn, puma cubs are beginning to wander further afield and adults are making the most of the long daylight hours to hunt guanacos.

Reef & Rainforest: Celebrating 30 Years of Pioneering Natural History Travel

In 1989 Alan Godwin had only just returned from a year’s travels around the world. He had visited many wild and wonderful places full of fauna of all descriptions and felt inspired to share those magical locations and his passion for wildlife with others. Starting Reef & Rainforest as a one-man-band from his flat in west London, Alan eventually moved to Devon and now has a small team of dedicated and highly experienced tailor-made travel consultants working out of modern offices by the River Dart in Totnes. With thirty years of insight, Alan has an unshakeable belief in the power of travel to help preserve the world’s last unspoilt wildernesses, both above and below the sea. Whether you wish to visit Belize (our first destination), Madagascar, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Ecuador, Chile or any of our many other natural destinations, Reef & Rainforest is able to organise it for you. Please call us on +44 (0)1803 866965 and speak to one of our knowledgeable consultants.
