Phew! It's been quite a busy time running up to Christmas, and everyone at SCOTO would like to thank you for supporting the organisation this year.
We've got so much more planned for 2023, and we can't wait to tell you more. In the meantime, we hope you can spend some time relaxing over Christmas, and we look forward to catching up with you again when the mince pies are finished.
One of the many benefits of community-led tourism is supporting career progression, as Jack from Callander Youth Project explains perfectly.

Community Tourism in Action: Bùth Bharraigh
Showing that community tourism comes in all shapes and sizes - Bùth Bharraigh is a community retail and visitor hub in the heart of Castlebay, Isle of Barra. They are a social enterprise that helps their community flourish by providing a range of goods and services and have become the main point of contact for visitors.
One of the primary functions of the Bùth is as a route to market for local goods. The Bùth stocks products and produce from local artisans- everything from knitwear to food.
The Bùth also stocks a range of items that meet their customers' needs, and the Barra Refillery gives a more sustainable way of shopping that reduces plastic waste.
"We've become a vital tourism hub providing information on accommodation, activities and events on the islands, and a valuable contact for the community, especially through the winter months when other services on the island are closed."
"Community tourism is important, as the community is in control of their own destination and give visitors a more local and authentic experience."

Community Tourism in Action: East Haven Together
A wee community in Angus has made a big impact in the area.
Launched in 2015, East Haven Together aims to protect and promote the heritage and natural environment of East Haven, a fishing community in Angus. The charity has been working hard to improve the visitor and community experience of the area.
"The need for clean toilet facilities to enable people to access the outdoors has never been greater. It is a basic necessity for everybody no matter what age or ability.
East Haven is a rural area with no other facilities so residents take great pride in the Wee Gallery at the Heritage Point."

Wester Ross UNESCO Biosphere is a community-led and owned non-governmental organisation. Their work focuses on people and place, sharing knowledge and best practice to inspire a positive future.
"Destination Management is about more than just promotion of an area. It covers all aspects of the visitor experience; from roads and toilets to natural and cultural heritage. Communities and their priorities are also key in this process; happy places to visit must first be happy places to live!"
