Did you know that your money goes much further here in the Yorkshire Dales than in towns ? Almost every shop, event, attraction, activity, cafe or pub here is independent, a charity or community-run.
When we support small and independent tourism businesses, the impact can be much greater than we might imagine. There are real people and hearts in every business.
There's a big difference between shopping in independent businesses in the Yorkshire Dales and in large shops in bigger towns. When you walk into a shop, gallery, cafe, pub or any other small business here, you're likely to be greeted by the owner, a member of their family or someone who lives locally and has worked there for a while. There's a sense of welcome and connection. It doesn't take long before they remember you and what you like. There's banter in the butchers, the wine shop owner who always remembers your favourite wine even when you don't, the gallery owner who can second-guess not only your preferences but those of the friends you've bought for in the past.
Shopping can take a bit longer here, as you go from shop to shop in search of each of their specialities. But that's a good thing. Slowing down can do us all good, and the conversations along the way are uplifting and satisfying. You're not just spending money in a shop - you're investing in a sense of community. It might be easy for me to drive to the nearest supermarket but they won't remember me next week, nor will they gather up produce and take it out to the person on a mobility scooter outside, checking that they're well. Shops here perform a service beyond their basic sales.
Research found that when you shop locally, for every £10 you spend, about £50 is generated in the local economy through the multiplier effect. You spend £10 in the grocers, and then they go and buy a paper from the newsagents, who pays a local window-cleaner for their services, who can then afford dance lessons for their daughter in the village hall, and so it goes on. That is far less likely to happen when you spend money with a chain in a larger town.
Another benefit of shopping in the Yorkshire Dales is that each market town is genuinely different. You won't find the same products or shops on every High Street. Visit Hawes, Masham, Pateley Bridge, Reeth , Richmond, Leyburn,Settle, Sedbergh, Grassington, Ingleton, and you'll soon see just how different they are.
Thank you for supporting our local businesses - you’re doing more good than you perhaps realise! Please do tell us about your favourite ones!

Come and walk along this well trodden path and admire this beautiful view.
🌿 ‘On the Right Path,’ accompanied by a bit of verse about a well-trodden path connecting Hawes and Gayle.
If tha’s from Hawes or Gayle, tha’s walked this path,
I'll bet, Holidaymakers too, with cameras set.
Spotting butterflies, or bugs in a dance,
Bairns running wild, given half a chance.
Dogs at tha heels, through the stile we squeeze,
Hands clasped tight, soft as a summer's breeze.
Off to work some go, or nip through on a short cut,
Stop to catch thy breath, in life's hectic rut.
Chatter never ends, bright as morning light,
Or silence drapes sorrow, deep into the night.
News of joy just in, steps quicken, eyes gleam,
Off to see a mate, heart light as a dream.
As tha walks this path, whether under sun or moon's glow,
Remember, dear wanderer, tha's on t'right path, 'tis true.

Hawes - the capital of the Yorkshire Dales. I’d vote for that ! 😊
If there was a 'capital of the Yorkshire Dales', where do you think it would be? Hawes would be a strong contender. Hawes is a perfect starting point for an exploration of the Yorkshire Dales. Dales Countryside Museum offers a great introduction to the area. It's run by Yorkshire Dales National Park and tells the fascinating story of the Yorkshire Dales and the people who have lived and worked here, and shaped the landscape for thousands of years.
Many visitors come to Hawes on a pilgrimage to Wensleydale Creamery - you can buy the famous cheese there, see it being made and learn more about its history. There are also plenty of independently-owned cafes, pubs and shops.
On market days the Hawes auction mart offers an insight into Dales farming life – if you can manage to understand a word the auctioneer shouts! Every Thursday from May through-out the summer, in one of the fields on the edge of Hawes you can watch farmer Richard Fawcett do a sheep dog demonstration.
From Hawes you can enjoy a trip from Hawes over the stunning Buttertubs Pass towards Swaledale, visiting Thwaite, Keld, Muker and Reeth.
The road in the opposite direction will take you towards Sedbergh through stunning countryside. You could also follow the Red Squirrel Trail through the woods at Snaizeholme.
Do you have a favourite cafe or pub, or something you love to do in and around Hawes?

🥾We have some great walks straight from our front door. This one was a linear route to Bainbridge, taking in Gayle, Wether Fell, Drumaldrayce and Semerwater (approximately 10 miles) and with some stunning views. There are many shorter (and longer for that matter) circular walks too. Come and see for yourselves 🥾 Yorkshire Dales National Park
