Developing the 'then and now' theme, I wonder if there is mileage in 'then, then, and now's'...

The junction of Matthew Street and Doncaster Street in Netherthorpe/Shalesmoor has seen a pub, a children's playground (one of several established by JG Graves), and is now abandoned, with Matthew Street closed off, soon to disappear. Opposite the site is the listed surviving cementation furnace.

Last week in a Substack for paid subscribers I took a look at the old streets that used to be behind the railway station. One of the 'then and now' shots deserves a post here I think - another extraordinary change in less than an average lifetime.

The junction of Granville Street (now tram tracks) and Norwich Street (turning left uphill behind the pub in the first photo, and can still be made out now in the second).

Back in the days when this weather was more commonplace Sheffield had 'snow gates', that is gates in bridges or alongside rivers, that could just be opened for the snow to be dumped into the water. Gradually they are being bricked up and slowly disappearing, but even ten years ago there were plenty still around.

Here's one from the city centre, near the station, a few years ago, and a bricked up gate on Washford Bridge, Attercliffe, from street view.
