Christian Aid Concert
Sunday 22 May 2022 at 7.00 pm
Helensburgh Parish Church
Admission is by donation £8 suggested (£5 Concession)

Two of the most popular classical works make up the programme for this Christian Aid Concert given by the Helensburgh Chamber Orchestra with Derek Clark as the piano soloist.

Haydn’s Symphony number 101, ‘The Clock’, will be paired with Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto in the hour-long concert which is being given to raise money for Christian Aid Scotland's project in support of Zimbabwe.

For the Beethoven, Derek Clark, who is Director of Music in Helensburgh Parish Church, and Head of Music at Scottish Opera, joins with Helensburgh Chamber Orchestra for what has become a regular, and very popular occasion, and follows their partnership in concertos by Mozart and Schumann in previous years.

Beethoven’s Fourth Piano concerto was ground-breaking with its dialogue between soloist and orchestra. ‘The Clock’ symphony, written by Haydn for one of his London concerts, is typically enjoyable, and not only in the ‘tick tock’ of the famous second movement.

The Helensburgh Chamber Orchestra, led by Christine Sinclair and conducted by David Bruce, brings together professional and amateur players, especially for these concerts.

Wecome To The Heart Of Helensburgh

The seaside resort of Helensburgh is a wonderful place to explore. With elegant, broad, tree-lined avenues, piers, a promenade, shops and eateries galore, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this refined Scottish town. There’s also a rich heritage to discover, from the town’s notable residents to its world-class architecture. What’s more, Helensburgh is easy to reach from the central belt of Scotland. The train from Glasgow takes just 40 minutes. So for a great day out, make your way to Helensburgh and discover the town’s fascinating history and heritage.

Sir James Colquhoun founded Helensburgh at the end of the 18th century, naming the town after his wife. Its early success was closely tied to the ferry service linking Helensburgh to Greenock, which allowed wealthy Glasgow merchants, professionals and industrialists to live on the altogether more pleasant north side of the Clyde and commute to work. These prosperous folk built some truly stunning homes.

Helensburgh’s planned grid of leafy streets contains a huge range of architectural attractions and The Helensburgh Architectural Trail is a great way to discover these gems, covering 25 buildings across the town centre, dating from 1853 to 2015.

Visitors will find Helensburgh to be a tranquil and peaceful town that is steeped in history but still has the capability to cater for the modern lifestyle. It you are yachting or merely passing through, you will be able to enjoy the hospitality of the locals and the beauty of the area.
