What an amazing job of the flowers in St John's Square after counting 10 pollinator species, including 5 species of bumblebee, in less than a minute, not including the rare white wolfbee, who pollinates by wafting pollen with her wagging tail.

The season is winding down as the last of the migratory birds head south, young harbour seals leave their mothers and the stars return. But Caithness is not without its wonders by any means, as my insomnia and dog accompanied me out at 2.30am. I have the photography skills of a potato and even I managed - the photos don't do it just. A fat, green glowing snake emerged from the sky and moved quickly across Thurso Bay, with green and white rays shooting from its back, some like flickering candles flames and some light torch beams, steady, narrow and strong. Glints of pink and red emerged to the naked eye. Stay up late guys, it's an eleven year peak in the solar cycle.

This time of year is great for watching gannet fishing schools off of the Caithness coast, as they teach their young how to fly. Even older juveniles can learn something from the masters, so if you spot a flock, here is a handy guide from the Scottish Seabird Centre on how to age them!

I am struggling with an ethical dilemma here - while I am producing a wildlife spotting guide, I have decided I am unwilling to publish specific locations for some species. Even under my supervision I have, unfortunately, had guests try and do things I have specifically instructed them not to when they have thought I am not looking. Ethical wildlife watching is a key part of what we do - staying downwind, remaining silent at important times, maintaining respectful distances, recognising signs that you are disturbing an animal, not obstructing traffic or driveways, and certainly not attempting to touch or feed them biscuits. Sadly I do not feel comfortable sharing locations without being able to supervise...I'm looking into how to produce the best guide to Caithness wildlife spotting without putting animals at risk. Honestly, thoughts on this matter would be appreciated

We care about our guests having a good time. Today we have a party of 6, but with limited English and requiring 2 car seats we don't have (how are there so many kinds? Why are they so expensive? And difficult to install and uninstall? Why even bother making ones that are less safe than others?!?! Too big of a problem for me unfortunately) - so of course I spent 4 hours writing out the full 11 page tour and translating it into French, sending a pdf that they may read aloud through the drive. If you have language barriers, pas de probleme mes Amis.

Nothing cheers you up like a baby otter and a baby seal playing together chasing fish. Wet tour, but good tour.

Right I'm bored now, almost a full week off after 4 months without a weekend. Time for something different, and the puffins to stop hogging the limelight. Current plans are to expand our tours to include...THE BIG FIVE! No there are no rhinos in the Highlands, didn't you know we have our own? Otters, eagles, seals, red deer and red squirrels. Let's chuck in leaping salmon, dolphins, carnivorous plants and more. While we're at it.

Will we potentially leave Caithness for a few of these? Well yes! The Highlands are full of nature to explore. Will we drop them back in Thurso, knackered and happy, to enjoy everything else Thurso has to offer? Of course.

After a busy season I took my first weekend off in 4 months to enjoy more of what Caithness has to offer. Thanks to 8 Do...

After a busy season I took my first weekend off in 4 months to enjoy more of what Caithness has to offer. Thanks to 8 Doors Distillery for an incredible tour and Halkirk Highland Games for a great day.

Still loads of puffins this evening, and we can now add otters (for a little while) to our evening tours. Tonight was the last night we guaranteed puffins, anything from here is a maybe and our tours will focus on other wildlife such as seals, salmon, otters, coos, deer and other beauties. In the meantime I'm celebrating an excellent season with my first night out, or indeed pint, in 2 months and some quality time with my husband.

Hi folks,

I was delighted to see two young fellas yesterday wanting advice on how to wild camp responsibly. As well as pointing them in the direction of the mountain bothy association for good camping locations, I thought I'd share some tips for any interested parties.

1. If there's livestock there's a farmer, not wild, avoid
2. No farms, no beaches, no car parks
3. Park in a public carpark or designated parking area, and walk at least 30 minutes/ 2 miles off the path. If you can't see people, they can't see you, you are not a problem.
4. Keep an eye on the Scottish wildlife warnings and do not use open fires when warnings are in place. Avoid disposable BBQs, never leave fires unattended, and use camp stoves where possible.
5. Don't be a jerk!

Have you got anything to add? Post in the comments!

Last night's tour ended with Rissos dolphins - last year rissos dolphins heralded the end of the puffin season. Will it be the same today? I hope not!

Hi folks, we are getting a LOT of requests for last minute tours when, of course, we don't currently have our puffin express bus! We are happy to try and help you out if you have your own vehicle, we still saw about 60-80 puffins on Friday (not sure which ones were repeat Landers when clusters are that dense). Or, download your guide and DIY your own tour. Please bear in mind that puffins leave the colony en masses, together. This means that they may be gone any day now, and we do not know which, only that it will be soon.

Based on more southerly sightings, starting this week our sunset tours offer you the chance to see our pufflings, or baby puffins. Evenings allow them to emerge, chaperoned by parents, to exercise the flight muscles they will soon use to leave. We have also recently heard much rare puffin song, and seen young males in large numbers performing Arial displays to attract a lifelong mate. Book your tour today to ensure you don't miss these incredibly rare sightings, only seen at this time of year for the next 10 days or so. We also have baby seals visible on our tours at this special time of year.
