In summer the cream of the world's DJs (David Guetta, Sven Väth, Armin van Buuren et al) descend on the island, making it the ultimate destination for clubbers. Dubai has become one of the world’s most popular locations during the last 20 years. In 2019, more than 16.73 million tourists were welcomed by the Arab state and set a new tourism record. One of the most open tourism destinations in the region is the Middle East vacation destination. Dubai welcomes Western travellers looking for unique enjoyment in the United Arab Emirates under the desert sun, but cities such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman are tough for visitors to adjust to.

Any time between November and April is arguably the best time to visit Dubai. A few light rain showers may appear between December and March, but they are never around for long. In November, temperatures begin to cool to around 30˚C after the hot summer.

Between December and March, temperatures are perfect for the Arabian Gulf’s beaches or the Aquaventure Water Park. Here, temperatures consistently reach the mid-twenties in the day before cooling to the mid-teens at night – ideal for that evening stroll.

Amidst a host of other outdoor activities including camel-racing, Dubai’s annual shopping festival also takes place sometime between January and March. During these winter months, the cooler evening temperatures provide a great opportunity to explore Dubai’s many authentic city restaurants.

It is inadvisable, but not impossible, to visit during the summer season. Dubai’s daily temperatures regularly reach 40˚C or above. These temperatures are also accompanied by higher levels of humidity that might be uncomfortable for some. Consequently, you’ll find fewer tourists and hotel rates are. Whilst the beach should be avoided in the middle of the day, it is a good time to visit the indoor ski centre and the air-conditioned shopping malls.

☼ Everyone always marvels about the wonderfully clear water, and if you’re the type to enjoy a relaxing beach-side holiday with the occasional sea dip, then Croatia may be for you. The one thing to point out is that the country is not that well known for its sandy beaches…BUT there are some sandy beaches all along the coastline if that is really important to you. The majority of beaches are of the pebble-y kind or stone kind. In many areas, you can even find your own little bit of deserted coastline for the ultimate in relaxation.

☼ You may have heard of the wonderful which – if you get the opportunity – is definitely a must-see. This truly magic natural place is a mix of interconnecting lakes and waterfalls and as stunning as pictures are, they don’t even do it justice. But it’s only one of eight National Parks in Croatia (and there’s also a number of Nature Parks, which are separately defined) which are great for hiking in, enjoying the flora and fauna and taking in the landscapes.

• Set in a restored 19th-century masseria, Dimora delle Balze is a stone masterpiece of local flavour and history. The 11-room hotel is situated around three courtyards, including a saltwater pool, a lounge and a breakfast terrace with views of the Unesco-protected Val di Noto. Each room is named after a piece of art, film, literature or music by a Sicilian artist, and all are decorated in the local style. Many have terraces overlooking the 60-acre estate’s gardens and citrus groves. If you’ve got a car, make the 35-minute drive across the valley to Noto’s historic centre, where bucolic charm gives way to Baroque splendour.
