Hidden gems of Gozo

My partner Vanessa started to take me for a walk, I was thinking 'fml it's hot why is she taking me rock climbing when it's currently 65 degrees!' Then I saw it, as we were walking down the rocky steps there it was, beautiful clear glistening water running through a beautiful rock valley! We got to the bottom where it was full of shingles and small stones. The water was clear and warm! There was a few jelly fish so we had to be careful when entering the water but WOW is all I could say! I was in awe of the valley, of its beauty, the smells of the fresh water, the warmth of the sea, the sound of small waves crashing against the small rocks it was bliss!

Imqaret are one of the the remnants of the Arab world which was left behind in Malta. Dates, citrus and spices are encased in a pastry and then deep fried.

The term Imqaret which is the plural of maqrut is derived from the arabic word meaning diamond. These pastries are usually cut into diamond shapes before deep frying but can also be cut into rectangles.

For a Brit this is quite hard to say! Im-uh-aret....I just can't get it! But they taste sensational!

It has been said there are 365 churches and chapels in Malta and Gozo, one for everyday of the year. The first building to be constructed in Valetta the capital was the Church of Our Lady of Victory and the Collegiate Parish Church of St Paul's Shipwreck, which is also said to be one of the oldest churches in Malta.

In this picture is the Church Of Jesuits in Valletta, built between 1593 and 1609 by the Jesuit order.

Ghajn Tuffieha

This is one of Maltas most beautiful beaches. It is a small beach, locates North - West Coast of Malta behind a small village called Manikata. Its at ita most beautiful at sunset ♥️

The only way to get down to the beach is by quite a hefty flight of stairs (over 100) so be prepared to put in the foot work however it is worth it!

There is also a restaurant bar where you can order some fab food and cocktails.

You can hire sunbeds and umbrellas when at the beach, and although there's a car park allocated at the top of the stairs there's rarely a free space therefore you can park on the main access road on both sides, just to pre- warn in the car park there is a parker so please take some small change.

You can get to the beach by bus! From Valetta take route 42 or 250 to St Paul's Bay, then hop on route 223 or 225 (trip is 1h 15). From sliema and St Julian route 225 is direct and takes a little over an hour. Bugibba, Qawara and St Paul's Bay direct routes 223 and 235 which takes roughly 20 mins!

When I visited in May half term we noticed there were alot of jelly fish on the beach so becareful around end of May beginning of June.

The beautiful Marsaxlokk, Malta's picturesque fishing village!

A few things to do:

The fish market is every Sunday and although it is dominantly fish stalls there are lots of other souvenir, clothes, shoes and toy stalls. Take cash, not card!

Lunch in some of beautiful restaurants surrounding the Bay who serve fresh fish of the day.

Boat trips; you're able to do a quick trip, or take your swimmers and stop off to take a swim in the beautiful mediterranean sea, or even a trip around the whole island!

When you're in Gozo it's a must to visit the beautiful Tal Mixta Cave overlooking Ramla Bay, it truly is breath taking!

A bit of history!

The cave was created by the people of Gozo as a way of providing shelter in the prehistoric race of people to protect them selves and their cattle from the winter, it was also used as protection from invaders' vessels, whilst also serving an a advantage point for gozitans looking to secure their shoreline.

'Mixta' derives from the Maltese word 'Mxett' meaning a place where one shelters in winter together with the cattle.
