Ruthven Barracks

Ruthven Barracks near Kingussie are the best preserved of the four barracks built in 1719 after the 1715 during the Jacobite rising.

Ruthven Barracks was one of four infantry barracks built across the Highlands by George II’s government following the failed 1715 Jacobite Rising.
The others barracks were at Fort Augustus , Bernera, Glenelg and Inversnaid.

Set on an old Medieval castle mound dating back to 1229, the complex comprises two large three-storey blocks occupying two sides of the enclosure, each with two rooms per floor.

The barracks and enclosing walls were built with loopholes for musket firing, and bastion towers were built at opposite corners where canons could fire at any threat at any direction.

After the battle of Culloden over 3,000 Jacobites retreated to Ruthven Barracks, Bonnie Prince Charlie realising his defeat sent the jacobites home.

On leaving the barracks the Jacobites destroyed the barracks burning it to the ground.

We visit Ruthven Barracks on our Outlander tour 5, although it never featured in the series historically it fits in with the Jacobite story.

Once you visit you will see why they chose to built the Barracks there, it commands a fantastic vantage point from attacking forces.

Although it is a ruin now it’s definitely worth a visit, the views are stunning.

Muthill Old Church And Tower.

Today’s post and pictures are of Muthill Old Church and Tower which are located in the small village of Muthill,Crieff.

It’s believed there was a small religious community based here around 1100’s and is thought to have been connected to the cathedral at Dunblane.

Around 1170 a monastery for the Culdees order was founded at Muthill.
The Culdees were an ancient monastic order with settlements in Ireland and Scotland.

During this time it’s thought the Bishops of Dunblane used Muthill as a substitute Cathedral.

The Bell Tower is the only part still standing today and was built around 1150 ,it would have been free standing and built before the later added church.

It’s thought the bell tower may have been built on the foundations of an early structure which may have been built previous to the tower and old church.

The Nave and chancel walls date to around the 15th century.
The church was abandoned around the 1820’s when a newer church replaced it.

The Tower and Church are now looked after by Historic Environment Scotland.

This is a fantastic place to visit with some fascinating headstones in the graveyard.

The Castle is the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell.

Originally there was a castle on the site since around the 1400 however the castle you see standing today was completed around 1789.

It was designed by Roger Morris and William Adam and was built in a Gothic style.

The Architects never saw their design completed as they both died before it was built , however William Adams sons continued the project until it was completed.

In 1877 the Castle was partly destroyed by fire and was rebuilt with a third floor and other parts being added and is the Castle which you see today.

The interior of the castle is stunning with some fantastic Tapestry’s, Artwork and fine painted ceilings.

The Castle grounds are beautiful and great to explore.

Another stop whilst in Inveraray is the Jail house and Court which is now a fantastic Museum.

The original prison was replaced by the building standing today, it opened its doors as a court Room and Jail in 1820 and eventually closed in 1889.

The Prison has 12 individual cells there is also outdoor cells “airing areas” which let prisoners exercise outside.

It opened in 1820 and finally closed its doors in 1889. The prison also and accommodation for prison staff along with its own interior exercise area.

A visit to Argyll and Bute is a must on any trip to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Drummond Castle Gardens

Today’s pictures are of the stunning Drummond Castle & Gardens which are located near Crieff in Perthshire.

The entrance to the Castle and Gardens is spectacular as you drive up a tree lined driveway which is around a mile long.

Outlander fans will instantly recognise these beautiful landscaped Gardens which were portrayed as the ornate park and orchard of the Palace of Versailles in France in season 2.

The Castle was built around 1490 and comprises of a 5 storey tower house.
In 1689 building began of the mansion house which sits next to the tower.

Like so many Scottish Castles Drummond Castle didn’t escape the wrath of Oliver Cromwell.
It was attacked and badly damaged by His forces in the 1650’s.

The beautiful gardens are set out in the form of a Renaissance garden of the 17th century with statues,Fountains and Urns along with formal terraces.

After the Jacobite risings the gardens were abandoned, however during the 19th & 20th century they were fully restored to their formal glory.

In 1978 the Family formed the Drummond Castle Trust to oversee the conservation of the Castle and Gardens.

Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Victoria have also visited the Castle and Gardens.

The Castle & Gardens have also featured in the 1995 film “ Rob Roy” which starred Liam Neeson.

Unfortunately only the Gardens are open to the public and not the Castle.

This is a fantastic place to visit and highly recommended.

Balmoral Castle

Today’s pictures and video are of the Magnificent Balmoral Castle located in Royal Deeside,Aberdeenshire.

This stunning Castle and Estate is the summer holiday home of the Royal Family.

The Castle is one of two private residences that belong to the Royal family unlike the Royal palaces which belong to the Crown estates.

Balmoral Castle has been a Royal residence since 1852.

The Royal family spend their summer holidays here every year and have done since it became a Royal residence.

It was originally owned by the Farquarson family who sold the original castle to Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert when shortly after it was deemed too small and the Castle you see before you today was built.

Although the main Castle is closed to visitors the Ballroom is open where you will find some fantastic photos and hand painted art work along with other personal items of the Royal family.

The castle grounds are open to the public and are absolutely gorgeous.

The staff onsite are extremely helpful and are very knowledgable.

There is also an audio tour available which you can follow around the grounds.

This is a beautiful place to explore and highly recommended.

Balmoral Castle is open to the public from April to July each year.

Japanese Garden
Cowden

Today’s post showcases the magnificent Japanese Garden which is located at Cowden near Dollar, Clackmannanshire which is around 30 miles from Edinburgh.

The gardens were established in the early 1900’s by Ella Christie.
Ella Christie was the first western woman to meet the Dalai Lama.
The gardens were designed by Taki Handa who help develop the seven acre site.

It is known to be the first and only Japanese garden of this scale to be designed by a woman and showcases the fantastic link between Japanese and Scottish Culture.

During the 1960’s the gardens were vandalised, however it was brought back to life with an expert team including the Japanese Architect and garden designer Professor Masao Fukuhara.

The Professor is probably best known for winning a gold medal at the Chelsea flower show and he was instrumental in the restoration of the Japanese Gardens in Kew, London.

There is a visitor centre along with a cafe. The staff are extremely helpful and it was a pleasure to visit the Gardens.

We highly recommend a trip to see this magnificent Japanese Garden.

Eilean Donan Castle

Today’s pictures are of the stunning Eilean Donan Castle.

Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed castle’s in Scotland, overlooking the Isle Of Skye it truly is a magnificent sight.

It was originally built in the 13th century , although it looked completely different back then.

In 1719 during the early Jacobite uprisings the British government found it was occupied by 46 Spanish soldiers who were supporting the Jacobite leaders.

They were waiting for weapons and cannons from Spain , however the English government found out about the uprising and sent three warships to quell the uprising.

On the 10th of May 1719, three heavily armed warships bombarded the castle with their cannons ,however as the walls were 5 metres thick in parts the cannons had little effect.

The castle was eventually overrun by government troops, when searching the castle the troops found barrels of gunpowder inside, which they then used to blow up the castle.

The castle was completely destroyed and lay in ruins for around 200 years.

The castle structure which you see today isn’t really that old ,it was reconstructed as a family home between 1912 and 1932 when it was bought by Lt Col John MacRae-Gilstrap, and much of the ruins were used in the current structure.

The iconic arched bridge was also added during this time along with a war memorial to the MacCrae Clan who had died during the first world war.

In 1955 the castle was opened to the public.

In 1983 the Conchra charitable trust was set up for the restoration and preservation of Eilean Donan Castle.

The castle has featured in several films, including Highlander as the home of the Clan MacLeod and as the Scottish headquarters of MI6 in the James Bond movie The World Is Not Enough.

The MacCrae family still have private accommodation in the castle.

It’s a fantastic castle to explore with lots of Jacobite artefacts, period furniture along with displays of weaponry and fine art works.

They also have very knowledgeable guides inside each room who are more than happy to explain the history of the castle.

Eilean Donan Castle is a perfect stop off on the way to the Isle Of Skye.

CASTLE SINCLAIR GIRNIGOE

Castle Sinclair is located about 3 miles north of Wick on the east coast of Caithness in north Scotland. It is considered to be one of the earliest seats of the Clan Sinclair. It comprises the ruins of two castle: the fifteenth century Castle Girnigoe and the early seventeenth century Castle Sinclair. They are designated as a scheduled monument.

The castle is one of a number of castles in Scotland owned by the Sinclair’s of Rosslyn Chapel. The Sinclair’s were a very powerful and wealthy noble family who came to Britain in 1066 with there cousin William the Conqueror. There name was originally St. Clair but this evolved into Sinclair of many centuries.

The earlier castle Girnigoe was built by William Sinclair probably sometime between 1476 and 1496. There is some evidence to suggest that the castle was built on the foundations of an earlier fortalice.

In 1577, George Sinclair imprisoned his own son John Sinclair, Master of Caithness in Castle Girnigoe on suspicion of rebelling against his rule. He was held there for seven years after which his father fed him on a diet of salted beef, with nothing to drink, so that he eventually died insane from thirst.

Expansion occurred in 1606 when Castle Sinclair was built, comprising a gatehouse and other buildings along with a curtain wall. These were connected to the earlier castle by a drawbridge over a ravine. The same George Sinclair requested the Scottish parliament to change the name to Castle Sinclair but because both names were written down in 1700 both names have been in use since.
