Seaplane or speedboat? The pros & cons 👇🏼
When you arrive in the Maldives, you’ll reach your resort by seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight and it’s something we always ask your preference on in our Tide 5 initial questions but here’s a guide to knowing which is right for you...
Speedboat
🚤 from plane to beach in no time: we will have arranged for the speedboat to be waiting for you in line with your flight arrival so you’ll be whisked away in no time and speedboat distances tend to be up to 90 minutes maximum.
🚤 if small planes aren’t your thing, speedboats are the way to go!
🚤 speedboats can run much longer hours into the dark which gives more options for late arriving flights
❓yes, great that a speedboat is quick (under 30 mins) but this can often mean the resort is very close to the airport and capital which doesn’t always lend to those idyllic, paradise views. This doesn’t apply to all resorts and we will always give you a heads up on this before recommending those it does apply to.
Seaplane
🌊 a totally unique experience in itself; the thrill of seeing the islands and that inviting turquoise water from above before you reach your resort
🌊 resorts reached by seaplane tend to be a little more remote and it’s also the only way of reaching the atolls that have the best diving (Raa, Baa, South Ari to name some)
❓it takes a little longer to go from plane to beach: when you arrive into Male international airport, you’ll be met by our partner team on the ground who will drive you to the seaplane terminal (either the Male seaplane lounge or the hotels dedicated lounge). You’ll get chance to freshen up in the lounge whilst we check you in for your seaplane. Most seaplane journeys are 35-60 minutes so when arriving on a morning flight, you should be at your resort sipping your favourite cocktail by lunchtime.
Domestic Flights (few resorts)
✈️ those resorts reached by domestic flight are generally the remotest ones
