After such a peaceful start, accelerate to Ba Chieu market for a taste of local life. Transition back into tranquillity at Jade Emperor Pagoda, built to honour Ngoc Hoang, the supreme Taoist god considered to be King of Heaven. Its architecture is quite special, having been built by a community of Cantonese migrants, and it is today considered one of the most important temples in Saigon. Hundreds of spectacular artworks are scattered throughout the pagoda, including paintings, tile work, wood panels, statues and elaborate altars carved from wood, ceramic and papier-maché. Tortoises swim in a pond outside, some bearing shells marked with auspicious inscriptions.
The next stop is Le Van Tam Park. Once used as a cemetery for French soldiers and leaders of the South Vietnam government, Le Van Tam was eventually transformed into the public green paradise it is today, populated by shady trees and well-maintained grassy lawns. Unsuperstitious Saigon’s locals come here to exercise and study in fresh air, away from urban pandemonium.3
Even locals do not know about this tour’s final secret. An ordinary apartment building, perhaps a little run down, contains a whole world inside.
