Today we visited Porches Pottery.
Since 1968, Porches Pottery has become a unique and famous institution in what is now a well-loved corner of Europe – the ancient kingdom of the Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost province.

This working pottery creates the most distinctive ceramics to be found in Algarve, and began as the idealistic dream of two artists, Patrick Swift and Lima de Freitas, one Irish and the other Portuguese. The two were determined to demonstrate that old crafts, and artistic traditions, need not be lost to the modern plastic age.

That was fifty years ago and Porches Pottery has proved that it is possible for hand crafted works to survive on their own merit. To this day, many of the artisans that Patrick Swift taught are here continuing a tradition that is thousands of years in the making.

At Porches Pottery you can see these artisans at work, acquire a truly unique souvenir of Algarve, and enjoy a light lunch in our Bar Bacchus café.

Throughout the year, Porches Pottery is open Monday to Friday from 09:00 until 18:00, and on Saturdays from 10:00 until 14:00.

Portimão's history is deeply intertwined with the natural resources of the Mediterranean matrix of its territory and with the strong fluvial and maritime relationship.

In this context, the processes of transformation and conservation by the salt of the fish wealth of its waters have emerged since antiquity and later, in the 20th century, an important fishing and canning industry that occupied the banks of the Arade.

In 1996, the need to preserve all this historical relationship motivated the acquisition, by the Municipality of Portimão, of the old fish canning factory “São Francisco”, located on the city's waterfront.
It is from this renovated factory building, dating from the end of the century. XIX, on the 17th of May 2008, the Portimão Museum, a center for cultural dissemination and a space for discovering the origins and evolution of the community, its territory and the most striking aspects of its industrial and maritime history.

Its reference exhibition “Portimão, Território e Identidade”, represents a historical synthesis of the socioeconomic and cultural trajectory of the people who lived here and marked the uniqueness of their identity and territory.

The town of Carvoeiro is located in central Algarve, a region where there’s a background of warm coloured rocks that hug small bays where the sand is washed by the waves of the turquoise sea.

In this old fisherman village rose an interesting, quite cosmopolitan, touristic centre, thanks to the calm water cove that exists there.

The white houses lit by the Algarve’s characteristic sun are aligned like a theater on the coast, using nature’s erosion, to watch the sea ahead from the best place.

This studio apartment has a separate private entrance along the side of the villa, which is surrounded by well-established plants. The patio area has a patio table with chairs which is situated overlooking the water gardens with sufficient space to BBQ. This makes it a wonderful place to sit out in all seasons. The fully fitted kitchen is well equipped with a cooker, microwave, refrigerator, kettle, and toaster. There is a small indoor dining area as well as satellite TV. The studio is supplied with a Queen bed and has another single bed in a small bedroom off the main room. Casa das Primas offers its guests an outdoor secluded (but shared) swimming pool with umbrellas and sun beds, overlooking the sea, the village of Carvoeiro and the water gardens. There is a Snug alongside. There is parking available in the road opposite or alongside the entrance. Faro Airport is a 50-minute drive from Casa das Primas. This studio apartment will sleep 2 persons. All linen is supplied.

The fully fitted new kitchenette is well equipped with a cooker, microwave, refrigerator, kettle, and toaster. There is a small indoor dining area as well as satellite TV. The studio is supplied with twin beds and a sliding picture window gives ventilation and a view onto the private patio. Casa das Primas offers its guests an outdoor secluded (but shared) swimming pool with umbrellas and sun beds, overlooking the sea, the village of Carvoeiro and the water gardens. There is a Snug alongside. There is parking available. Faro Airport is approximately a 50-minute drive from Casa das Primas. This studio apartment will sleep 2 persons. All linen is supplied.

Wonderful views from this studio apartment situated on the first floor of the villa and has a separate entrance off a small courtyard. It has a bedroom area with twin beds, built-in wardrobe and bedside tables. There is a sitting area with a sofa and sufficient chairs to seat 4 persons. A dining room table is also able to seat 2-4. There is a television and DVD player available. The “Penthouse” apartment is fully air-conditioned with a heating facility during the winter months. A full size kitchen, which is well equipped with an under-counter oven, 4-plate hob, microwave, refrigerator, leads off the main studio room. There are two view terraces, overlooking the water gardens and swimming pool. There are tables, chairs and umbrella available. There is a separate shower-room, leading onto a small outdoor terrace for drying towels etc. The views are breathtaking over the sea, swimming pool and the countryside. A BBQ is available. This apartment will sleep 2 adults and a small child
