Fabulous walk 😊
Is this the best circular pub walk in the UK?
Well folks, I think it might just be?
And quite frankly I don’t think there is anything I would rather be doing this festive season than go for a walk and the pub
Start and Finish: The Old Point House.
Distance: Around 4 miles or 6 km (easy to moderate and suitable for children)
Why?
Well, quite simply there are not many walks that encompass muddy bays rich with birdlife such as dunlin, grey plovers, redshanks, oyster catchers and curlews. As well as estuaries banked by woods, historic iron age and Victorian aged forts, a bustling river with modern industries and new and old Lifeboat stations.
Thorn Island and Stack Island hug the coastline as well as secret coves and as you come round the headland, there in front of you is the Atlantic ocean. You then turn back towards the sandy beach of West Angle Bay with its wonderful Wavecrest cafe where an ice cream or a cup of tea keeps you refreshed and ready to carry on with your adventure. Then you have an old village to walk through which has over 25 listed buildings and a grade 1 listed Sailors Chapel behind the village church, a place to remember all the lives lost at sea.
Just at the right time as the feet begin to feel the toil of the road and you getting slightly parched, the lovely Hibernia Inn is there ready to soothe the soul. The last leg awaits you as you arrive back on the old track next to the salt marsh shores of Angle bay. As you cross the bridge an old forgotten medieval castle lies at the top of the creek to your left.
And then just when you think you’re at the end of the earth, there’s the Old Point House Pub.
