Expedition ships often travel to remote, fragile, and pristine destinations where the biggest threat to local ecology is the introduction of foreign species of fauna and flora.

Some destinations such as Svalbard, Antarctica, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia have adopted strict bio-security checks for visiting ship passengers. This means that guests are required to clean their boots, backpacks, trousers and other equipment before and after the landings, and ensure their clothing and equipment doesn’t carry any mud or biological matter that may contain seeds, insect eggs, etc.

Thorough cleaning of equipment before and after each landing will quickly become routine for guests, and is vital to prevent the introduction of non-native animals, plants or microbes from outside a region, or between landing sites in the same region (e.g. to prevent transmission of disease between penguins colonies in Antarctica).

Ahead of commencing our 24-25 Antarctic season, we will have a new maximum passenger capacity for our voyages to the polar regions.

Effective immediately, we will now travel with no more than ⭐️130 passengers⭐️across our fleet of purpose-built small ships visiting Antarctica and the Arctic, including the Greg Mortimer, Sylvia Earle and the recently launched Douglas Mawson, sailing in December 2025.

With passenger landing limits in Antarctica and some areas of the Arctic, we wanted to reinforce our commitment to providing the small ship experiences our passengers know us for, with more time off ship and more immersive activities. This change solidifies our position as one of the most intimate small ship offerings in our class for the polar regions.
