Born on this day 1354 (according to Thomas Pennant, the 18th century writer and antiquarian),

Owain Glyndŵr, who in the 15th Century led a popular uprising against the English which lasted more than a decade.

Owain was a member of the Welsh gentry who studied law at the Inns of Court in London and who was descended from the ancient royal houses of Wales. In 1400, after a century of subjugation to the English crown, the Welsh were ready for rebellion. Henry IV had seized power from Richard II, and the new king refused to support Glyndŵr's legitimate grievance against Reginald de Grey, Lord of Ruthin. This initially local dispute quickly became a national uprising. Rallying other Welsh nobles, Glyndŵr proclaimed himself Prince of Wales. Support for his cause was widespread, with Welshmen from Oxford and London returning home to join Glyndŵr's uprising. Henry responded by marching his army into Wales. Glyndŵr remained elusive, harrying Henry's army and ravaging his strongholds. By the end of 1403, Owain Glyndŵr controlled much of Wales.

Glyndŵr sought to establish alliances, notably with the French. His 'Pennal' letter to Charles VI of France survives today and resulted in some financial and military support. French troops landed at Milford Haven in 1405 but remained fighting alongside Glyndŵr for under a year. Owain's defeat at Pwllmelyn in Monmouthshire was a turning point, after which his power ebbed. Glyndwr retreated into the heartland of central Wales, where he died, probably in around 1416, still a free man, having secured a legendary place in Welsh history.

More about our beautiful pilgrim church.

Today is the feast day of Saint Melangell, patron saint of hares and rabbits.

Prince Brochwel Ysgithrog was hunting near Pennant in the year 604 when his hounds chased a hare into a thicket, where they found a beautiful maiden at prayer. The hare sheltered under the hem of her garment, and the dogs fled. The Prince, discovering that the lady was Melangell, a king’s daughter who had fled Ireland to escape a forced marriage, gave her the valley as a place of sanctuary. Melangell remained there, where she founded a nunnery.

Pathways are the routes and mechanisms of the introduction and spread of invasive non-native species (INNS).

The top six pathways of highest risk in GB are:
• Arriving on the hulls of boats
• Escaped plants from horticulture
• Contaminants of ornamental plants
• Ballast water from the inside of boats
• Stowaways on fishing equipment

Plans have been drafted to reduce the risk of INNS arriving in GB, check out the Pathway Action Plans (PAPs) for zoos, recreational boating, recreational angling, horticulture and soon to be added, exotic pets on the GBNNSS website https://orlo.uk/NW4lB

Check Clean Dry

May is a great month to get out and about and enjoy the environment of Wales, whether you’re going for a walk or enjoying a favourite hobby like paddling, fishing, boating or outdoor swimming remember to always Check Clean Dry your shoes, clothes and equipment to ensure that you do not accidentally spread invasive non-native species and help to protect the plants and animals in Wales.

Check: Check your equipment, boat, and clothing after leaving the water for mud, aquatic animals or plant material. Remove anything you find and leave it at the site.

Clean: Clean everything thoroughly as soon as you can, paying attention to areas that are damp or hard to access. Use hot water if possible.

Dry: Dry everything for as long as you can before using elsewhere as some invasive plants and animals can survive for over two weeks in damp conditions.

Just a few miles along the valley - a beautiful location.

Bore da, bawb.

It was on this day in 1403 when the future Henry V would write to his father (Henry IV) that he had razed the home and birthplace of Owain Glyndŵr, Sycharth. Here's a short post about another Glyndwr home.

Near the village of Glyndyfrdwy in Denbighshire, there stands Owain Glyndŵr's Mount - an originally 12th century motte which became synonymous with Glyndŵr in the 15th century.

It was on this very site where, on September 16th, 1400, Glyndŵr would be proclaimed "Prince of Wales" and begin his 15-year Uprising against the English throne. The area was destroyed around the year 1403 by the forces of the future Henry V, then Henry of Monmouth.
