Wales Week might be over for another year but the Welshness in Berkshire continues. The Welsh in Berkshire FB group is a growing community of Welsh people in Berkshire, Welsh businesses with stockists in Berkshire, folk who love Berkshire and those who want to know more about where to go and what to do in Berkshire.

People have been connecting and meeting up, Welsh speakers and learners siarad and dysgu Cymraeg, authors have visited, more venues are stocking Welsh items whilst others have been introduced to Welsh societies and influences.

Do join us. Tell your friends. See you there.

TUESDAY 5 MARCH at 2pm, not ONE but TWO authors will be at Wokingham Library at 2pm.

Wales Week / Berkshire has had a connection with Crime Cymru since our first year when and came for an evening in Binfield so we are are delighted to welcome two more Crime Cymru authors and to Berkshire in our fifth year.

Chris Lloyd was born in an ambulance racing through a town he’s only returned to once, which probably explains a lot. The result of his lifelong interest in World War 2 and resistance and collaboration in Occupied France, The Unwanted Dead (Orion) is Chris’s first novel set in Paris, featuring Detective Eddie Giral. The series will see Eddie negotiate his way through the Occupation, trying to find a path between resistance and collaboration, all the time becoming whoever he must be to survive the ordeal descended on his home.

Mark Ellis is a thriller writer from Swansea and a former barrister and entrepreneur. He is the creator of DCI Frank Merlin, an Anglo-Spanish police detective operating in World War 2 London. His books treat the reader to a vivid portrait of London during the war skilfully blended with gripping plots, political intrigue and a charismatic protagonist.

Head to Wokingham Library on Tuesday 5th March at 2pm to hear Chris and Mark talk about their books, life, Crime Cymru and Gŵyl Crime Cymru Festival.

Delighted to introduce you to Cariad Pilates who is offering free taster sessions during Wales Week / Berkshire at the following classes week commencing 4th March at the following times:

- Mon 7 pm
Evendons Primary School, Evendons Lane, Wokingham

- Mon 8:15 pm or Thurs 7 pm
Online via Zoom

If you are interested in one of the sessions please send an email to [email protected].

Cariad Pilates is run by Su a Cardiff-born Welsh lady who moved out of Wales in 1999 to Berkshire. Together with her husband and boys they are settled and enjoying life in Wokingham, where she is an IT Consultant in the day and teach some Pilates classes and 1:1 during some evenings.

“I have worked in Corporate businesses since I graduated from Swansea University. Over the past 10 years, I felt I needed to do something in addition to my day job, which was more fulfilling. I have always exercised regularly. I loved doing Pilates classes and have done for many years so I decided I would train to become an instructor. I have never looked back! I have been teaching for 5 years in person at Evendons Primary School (Sports Hall), also online and I do 1:1's too. I enjoy helping people improve their mobility, strength and flexibility, which in turn helps mental well-being and brings awareness into how they move and sit to aid them in everyday life.

Please reach out even if you just want to find out more about Pilates and how it can benefit you.”

Today we shine the spotlight on White Castle Vineyard in Abergavenny.

White Castle Vineyard is a Welsh vineyard situated near the market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth owned and run by Robb and Nicola Merchant.

Having purchased the 12 acre small holding in 1995 they converted the milking parlour into their home a year later, however it was 2008 before the dream of owning a vineyard become a reality, the 5 acre gently sloping, south facing field was purchased, soil tests were performed and vines ordered.

May 2009 saw the planting of 4000 vines, the varieties of vines planted were Pinot Noir, Regent, Rondo, Seyval Blanc & Phoenix, now there was no turning back, May 2010 saw a further planting of 800 vines this variety being Siegerrebe.
May 2019 marked their 10 year Anniversary since first planting and to mark this milestone they have planted a further 2000 vines these varieties are Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc.

Robb & Nicola have attended Plumpton College East Sussex to study viticulture, this training giving them the skills needed to produce quality Welsh Wines.

The grapes are closely monitored, as they ripen they will be carefully hand harvested and selected, then immediately transported to the winery for pressing to ensure we retain all the freshness and fruity aromas intact.”

Not only can you purchase wine through the website you can also go on a Vineyard Tour with wine tasting, pop in or sponsor a vine. All the details are on the website.

“Our aim is to produce Quality Welsh Wines.

We are very passionate about what we do here at White Castle Vineyard and are always striving to be as good as we possibly can be.”

Did you know that all Hungarian students in the sixth grade learn "The Bards of Wales" by heart? The poem written by János Arany tells of the fate of 500 Welsh bards executed by Edward I for not singing his praises at a banquet at Montgomery Castle.

For a taste of HUNGARY in Berkshire head to The Duke, Sunninghill for their Hungarian menu this weekend.

See Magyar Cymru for more Hungarian Welsh connections
