Culverhayes - Self-catering cottages in Devon Two cosy comfortable rectory cottages in super grounds, with wood-burners and welcoming Devon cream teas - and a pub a stroll down the hill

On a hill above the thatched village of Sampford Courtenay is a rectory on a gravel driveway and two cottages at the far end. It's a grand setting, the gardens are lovely and you are off the tourist trail; four miles from Dartmoor, a half hour from Exeter. Each cottage has its own outdoor area – a terrace with oak tables and chairs, a lawn with sunloungers. Hopetown Cottage was once the carriage h

ouse, Spice Cottage the stables, both are of 18th-century cob and stone. Now they are immaculate inside, with Laura Ashley furniture and well-lit kitchens and not a thing out of place. In airy bedrooms upstairs are pocket sprung beds, feather down pillows and pretty baskets of toiletries. Once you've explored the north Devon coast or the gardens of Rosemoor, how delightful to return to Culverhayes' own lovely acres, with a large pond and croquet lawns, a greenhouse and a restored kitchen garden – help yourselves to surplus in season. You are welcomed by a cream tea (tuck in by the log fire!), you can book in for supper at the pub, a mere stroll down the hill, and welcoming Eleanor leaves you breakfast stuff to get you started.
