With the wet and very mild autumn we're having, it's been a fantastic time for fungus, which love this sort of weather. We spotted this lovely bright yellow staghorn fungus in a copse of pines near Arne the other day. 🍄🍄

With half-term coming up and hopefully some sunnier weather it's a great time to book up a safari and get out into the wilds of Purbeck. Call or email us to find out more.

There are some fantastic moths around at the moment in Purbeck and we've seen lots of Jersey Tiger moths over the last couple of weeks.
🦋
But how about this beautiful Privet Hawk moth - one of the UK's largest moths, spotted resting in the grass yesterday?!

Despite the cooler and wetter days so far this summer, there's still so much to see on our safaris. Travelling across some beautiful chalk grasslands on our Purbeck Hills route in the last week we've seen loads of beautiful yellow and black banded Cinnabar Moth caterpillars clustered on their favourite food plant, the Ragwort, which is in full-bloom at the moment. 🐛🦋

We've also seen a fair number of Six-spot Burnet moths which look very similar to the adult Cinnabar moth. Great to see good numbers of both these species.

Be sure to book a Purbeck adventure in our Land Rover Defender if you're visiting this lovely part of Dorset!

Yellow ragwort is everywhere at the moment! Although it generally gets eradicated on farmland as horses and cattle don't take kindly to it, it's a food plant for quite a few insects, including the beautiful cinnabar moth.

Its black and yellow banded caterpillars love ragwort and we spotted these out on the hills the other day.

Great to see that numbers of the endangered southern damselfly are increasing in Purbeck 🌾🪷

We’ll be keeping an eye out for them on our safaris!

Did you know that Purbeck is one of the few places in the UK where you can see this blue beauty?

We have the endangered southern damselfly on two sites:

• On Corfe Common, volunteers recorded 36 this year, the highest number since our surveys began in 2018.
• On Hartland Moor, numbers have stayed stable at 198.

This success ties in with the work we’ve been doing to rewet areas and clear waterside vegetation. Southern damselflies need shallow, unpolluted water with open, sunny banks.

Good news to celebrate in !

On our safaris we’re now seeing many more orchids, with lots of pyramidal and bee orchids around on the chalk and limestone grasslands.

Also early purple orchids like this one, which seem to have flowered later this year - maybe due to the very wet spring we had.

We get to travel to some beautiful places in Purbeck....

We took a family out across Purbeck and along the coast towards Kimmeridge, last week. They were staying in this fabulous location in a cottage at Anvil Point, right beside the lighthouse! 😄

Great to see the Osprey pair have returned to their Purbeck nest for a third year! 🦅

We’re hoping to spot them on our future safaris.

Absolutely recommend checking out the Birds of Poole Harbour live nest cam 🪺

What an exciting day!! It's wonderful to see CJ7 and 022 back on the nest together again.

We've already started to receive a few questions about whether we are running the Osprey Tours again with Careys Secret Garden this year to view the nesting pair and hear about the project.

We're pleased to say that we are currently making preparations for these tours to go ahead this year, so watch this space! We're making final adjustments to the viewing setup and giving the birds some time to settle in before releasing any dates to book, but plan to announce these events very soon.

If you want to make sure you don't miss out on tickets, you can subscribe to our newsletter on our website, which is where our events will first be announced. You can subscribe here: https://www.birdsofpooleharbourbookings.co.uk/subscribe

We were so grateful last year for the respect shown for the birds after we made the decision to share the location of the nest. We would like to ask for your cooperation again this year in helping us to protect the birds, by not turning up to Careys Secret Garden without booking, and not straying away from the permitted areas to try and view the Ospreys. The nest site is incredibly sensitive and Ospreys are a Schedule 1 species which means they are protected by law. We therefore ask that you are mindful not to disturb the birds and avoid attempting to get closer to the nest as this will risk the success of this very important nesting pair. We're privileged to be able to now share this space with these birds, and ensuring their safety is our top priority.

Thanks, as ever, for all of your support and excitement for the Ospreys. We're looking forward to seeing the story unfold again this year, and sharing it with so many of you!

You can watch the live webcams here: https://www.birdsofpooleharbour.co.uk/osprey/osprey-webcams/

It seems like the rain has been never-ending this Winter, but milder Spring days are bringing in the first summer migrants and we heard Chiffchaff and Cetti's warblers last week.

Easter is a great time to get out on safari with us to see what’s arriving in Purbeck🌷🐑

On the shores of this secluded bay in the South Harbour all you’ll hear are the occasional cries of oystercatcher or curlew.

In the surrounding fields are large flocks of overwintering Fieldfare and Redwing which have flown in from Scandinavia.

We even spotted a couple of Egyptian Geese last week! 🪿
