Today is World Environment Day, and if you're new to the Hutton John Estate family, we thought we'd share just a few of the wonderful ways we're prioritising sustainability in our cabins and cottages, including...

🌱 We ensure all of the lights we use are LED in order to operate as efficiently as possible
🌱 We always support local businesses where possible, from the cladding in our cabins to the goodies in our welcome hampers, significantly reducing our carbon footprint
🌱 All of the electricity in our cabins besides running the hot water is run on solar panels
🌱 Our hot tubs are wood-fired and we supply enough locally sourced, sustainable wood for your first soak
🌱 The heritage wood surrounding our cabins, Brow Wood, has been carefully rewilded to create a nature-rich habitat for local wildlife

Our hard work was proudly recognised earlier this year when we were awarded the bronze Green Tourism accreditation, and we'll keep reviewing and refining the way we do things until we hit gold! 🏆

Obviously you should never let your dog near sheep, unless they are properly trained. Very proud of my Shadow. I was trying to take a picture of the sheep and she just meandered in to view.😂 The sheep did a much better job of posing for the camera, but 👀 she’s just not bothered by them and more importantly they’re not bothered by her. Fell sheep can be very skittish because they aren’t used to dogs, but they know her.

Can you spot the sweet ❤️️ hidden away on the Gardeners Bothy?

This romantic sacre-coeur (known as a sacred heart) window matches those added to the main house by Laura Henrietta in 1867, a member of the Hudleston family who resided at Hutton John Estate during the mid 1800s.

All of our Lakeland cottages are steeped in a rich history with charming tidbits just like this one, waiting to be discovered. Each property is tucked away within its own corner of the estate, where total peace and quiet await.

Being situated in the heart of the Lake District, we're too often spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding where to explore, where to eat and what to do, and it's no wonder our guests are, too!

For those visiting our luxurious cabins, take a wander around to Brow Wood and you'll find this secret viewpoint tucked away overlooking rolling fields and breathtaking fells 🌱

It's the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a day of exploring, and an ideal base to watch the abundant wildlife that surrounds us. On a good day, there are tons of birds and animals to be seen, including hares, badgers, deer and of course lots of sheep – this is the Lake District after all!

Happy Earth Day 🌿🌱🌳

Here at Hutton John Estate, we are responsible for 550 acres of rolling fields and wonderful woodland in the beautiful Lake District. It's only right, therefore, that we should keep this lush landscape looking as green as it can possibly be, while playing our part with greener business practices, too.

In our cabins and cottages, we have meticulously reviewed how we do things over the years, upgrading and updating where possible, in order to be a more environmentally friendly business. In fact, as you will see from the post pinned on our profile, we have proudly been awarded a Green Tourism award this year in recognition of our efforts, but we know the hard work doesn't stop there.

Our wonderful owner Kate has also been invited to partake in a new podcast at the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, sharing our sustainability story in the hopes that we can inspire others to do the same. We'll be sure to share more details on this soon!

Rain or shine, we'll be spending the day celebrating the nature that surrounds us, and we hope you will too.

We have some exciting news... 🏡🥂✨

We have officially added a fourth property to our Lakeland Cottages collection... Introducing, the Gardeners Bothy!

The Gardeners Bothy is a one-of-a-kind retreat designed just for two, situated on the outskirts of the Estate's walled garden. The bothy was originally built back in 1870 by Laura Henrietta Hudleston, and, with its handy location beside the Estate’s walled garden, it was commonly used as living quarters for the gardening team.

It's a structure steeped in history, and one we cannot wait for you to enjoy for yourself. Our diary is now open for bookings in the Gardeners Bothy, and we hope to welcome you very soon 🌿

We have received a Green Tourism Award! 🌱🏆

As many of you may know already, since starting our journey as a luxury accommodation provider, we have been doing our very best to ensure our cottages and cabins run as sustainably and environmentally friendly as possible. From the way we source our water to finding more efficient ways to power our properties, we are extremely passionate about keeping our National Park green.

That's why we are oh so excited to share that we have been awarded a bronze Green Tourism Award as a testament to our efforts. We, like most, have a long way to go, but we are so very proud to have received this recognition.
