Marella Cruise Part 2 – Island Explorer

Santa Cruz de Tenerife -Lanzarote-Funchal-La Palma-Gran Canaria-Santa Cruz de Tenerife
I was excited to go on the cruise to explore some new places. Although I had been on holiday to both Tenerife and Gran Canaria before, all of the areas the cruise was going to I hadn’t visited previously.

On Lanzarote we had an excursion to Timanfaya National Park, a spectacular volcanic landscape of more than 100 volcanoes, created by six years of volcanic eruptions that took place between 1730 and 1736. Although the eruptions took place nearly 300 years ago, Lanzarote’s dry climate means that the volcanic landscape has not changed since that time. Our excursion to the main Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) Centre at Islote de Hilario gave us the chance to experience first-hand the geothermal anomalies present in the area (thought to be caused by a Magma intrusion under the island). Although volcanically dormant, temperatures of up to 610°C have been recorded at a depth of 13 metres, and up to 277°C at just 10cm We got to witness demonstrations of this heat as straw dropped into a hole ignited, cold water poured into a hole sent a gust of steam into the air and we were handed gravel that was too hot to hold. The El Diablo restaurant there uses the geothermal heat for cooking chicken by placing a large grill over a deep pit. Back on the coach, we went down the ‘Ruta de los Volcanes’ – a narrow road, closed to normal traffic, that snakes through the most spectacular areas of the National Park.

On Madeira, the port of Funchal is close to the town, so you can easily walk there, or take the shuttle bus. Most of our group went on a 4x4 off-road excursion, but a few of us went on a Christmas Lights excursion instead. We visited the pretty harbour at Camara de Lobos, where we tried the local poncho, a drink made with rum, honey, sugar, and citrus juice. Back in Funchal, we visited a garden of lights and the Christmas Market. As the ship was on an overnight stop, we didn’t have to be back for a certain time. The next morning, we went back into the town and took a tuk-tuk tour around the city and visited a garden. Some of the group went on the cable car to the botanic gardens and came down in a wicker toboggan.

We had to miss visiting La Palma due to an unfavourable weather forecast. If there is a storm, the safest place for a ship is out at sea. Although it is disappointing to miss a port, you can claim if your travel insurance covers missed ports. You can also claim if you are confined to your cabin due to illness. You need specific cruise insurance, which doesn’t cost much more than regular travel insurance, both of which I am registered to sell.

On Gran Canaria, some of our group took an excursion to Puerto de Mogan a beautiful harbour village and to Maspalomas to see the giant sand dunes. As I had been to both before, I took a Hop-on, hop-off bus tour to the Old Town of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. There were lots of beautiful old buildings, including The Casa de Colón a museum about Christopher Columbus which was well worth seeing. As we had missed La Palma, we had an overnight in Gran Canaria.

Back at Tenerife, we said goodbye to our new friends heading to Gatwick or Glasgow, as the Birmingham flight was later than theirs Unusually for a cruise ship, we were allowed to stay on board until our coach arrived to take us back to Tenerife Airport. Most cruise lines make all passengers disembark early in the morning.

After my 1st Marella cruise would I sail with Marella again? Absolutely. I thought it was a really great cruise option and would totally recommend it. All of the crew were lovely, the food was delicious, the facilities were good and the price for a Marella cruise is probably one of the most budget-friendly you can find.

Marella cruises Part 1. Just before Christmas, I was lucky enough to win a place for an educational trip on a Marella cruise. As I had never been on a Marella ship, I was keen to find out why they are so popular with the British. Marella is a British cruise line – part of the Tui group.
Benefits of Marella are:
• All Inclusive as standard, includes food, drink, travel and tips.
• Great value, as you wont be paying for drinks and tips on top.
• Everything is charged in £.
• There are British plug sockets in the cabins.
• All of the entertainment is in English.
• Most of the other passengers are British.
• ATOL and ABTA protected.
• Most flights are on Tui planes.
• Easy transfers from airport to ship.

The ship: Marella Discovery 2 is a fairly small ship by cruise ship standards, carrying a maximum of 1,836 passengers and 771 crew members. We flew from Birmingham to Tenerife, but there are flights from many other regional airports. I can recommend the Novatel at Birmingham Airport. When we landed at Tenerife South, the Tui coach transfer was very efficient and took us to Santa Cruz Port.

The Cabins: As I had never been on a Marella ship, I didn’t know what to expect, but the ship is beautiful. We were staying in newly refurbished deluxe balcony cabins on deck 7. There are also inside cabins, outside cabins and suites. We were given a tour of some other types of cabins by one of the officers.

Eating: There are 5 included restaurants and 3 speciality restaurants that charge a bit extra – although not as much as a similar restaurant in the UK. The food was really good everywhere we ate. There were kettles in the cabins too, something you don't usually get on American or European cruise lines.

Entertainment: There is a theatre that seats 850 delivering West-End style productions. The ship pub, Squid & Anchor has game shows and pub quizzes. There are evening movies on deck, and live musicians in the Atrium Bar. The Live Room is the ship’s nightclub.
Facilities: There is a complimentary spa (most ships charge to use the spa). You can book chargeable beauty or hair treatments here too. There are 2 pools with whirlpools, 4 more whirlpools and a sunbathing area just for adults. Children are catered for in the babies, kids and teens clubs. There is a gym, mini-golf, rock-climbing wall and a gamer-zone for teens and adults. There are also a range of shops selling duty-free goods to browse when you are at sea.

Booking a package holiday with Easyjet, Tui, or Jet 2? Easy to do right? Just a few clicks on their website and you're all booked. No need for a travel agent when you can do it easily yourself? Until something goes wrong!!

Today I was on the phone for 58 minutes to one of those holiday package providers (that was the trade phoneline, the customer phoneline typically takes much longer) They had changed my clients' flights to unworkable times. I was then changing another booking that related to the flights for 20 minutes. I then needed to write 2 emails to do with the booking. Total time around 2 hours. Yesterday looking at other flight options/suppliers took around 3 hours.

Would you have 5 hours available to sort out your holiday when the supplier decides to change the flight times? You probably don't, but I do!! That's why it's better to book with a travel agent, even if it's only a simple package holiday with a well-known holiday company.
