Communication to Pilgrimage Directors and Presidents of Hospitalities from Fr. Michel Daubanes, Rector of the Sanctuary of Lourdes on July 9th., 2024. (Translated from French version).

Dear friends, pilgrimage directors and presidents of Hospitality,

Since July 1st, work is being carried out on five baths to ensure improved, continuous filtering of the water in the piscines (baths). Single-use linen and disinfectant mats will help to reinforce the sanitary process. More than €200,000 has be allocated to these improvements in 2024.

Five baths will now be dedicated to the total immersion of pilgrims who wish to do so.

Pilgrimage directors and presidents of Hospitality coming to Lourdes from July 15th are invited to contact the baths service to find out about the possibilities that are opening up but which remain conditional on the presence of a sufficient number of HNDL helpers. Diocesan Hospitalité workers who have already bathed can, of course, volunteer to provide assistance and reinforcements.

We are doing everything we can, with the precious dedication of the Hospitalité of Our Lady of Lourdes, to welcome you in the best possible way and respond to the hope raised by the possibility of a traditional bath in the Sanctuary of Lourdes. Sick and healthy pilgrims will continue to be invited to experience the Water Gesture which allows a considerable number of people to honor the request of the Immaculate Virgin:

“Come, drink at the spring and wash yourself there” (9th apparition, February 25th, 1858).

With fraternal love,

Fr. Michel Daubanes

Statement by the Bishop of Tarbes & Lourdes, Msgr. Jean-Marc Micas on Tuesday 2nd. July, 2024 regarding the mosaics on the facade of the Rosary Basilica (translated from the original French version).

Following the revelation of numerous assaults in which Marko Rupnik was implicated, the question arose about the future of the mosaics he created for the Sanctuary of Lourdes and which are displayed on the facade of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. Many people who were victims of sexual violence and abuse by clerics have expressed their suffering and the violence that this exhibition now constituted for them.

Between May and October 2023, with the Rector of the Sanctuary, we set up a commission to discern the response to this difficult question. Among the members of this commission were victims (French and foreign nationals), but also experts specializing in sacred art, lawyers, people involved in the prevention and fight against abuse, and the chaplains of Lourdes. The commission has been working since November 2023 until now. At the same time, I have been able to listen to and read the opinions of many people who wanted to send me their own inputs: cardinals and bishops, artists, lawyers, victims, pilgrims, etc.

Today, I see that opinions are very divided and often split. Should these mosaics be left where they are? Should they be destroyed? Should they be removed or exhibited elsewhere? There has been no consensus to any proposal. The positions are intense and passionate.

For my part, my personal opinion is now clear: this situation has nothing to do with other works whose author and victims are deceased, sometimes for several centuries. Here, the victims are alive and the artist is also alive. Furthermore, I have understood over the months that it is not my responsibility to reason from the status of a work of art, from its "morality" which should be distinguished from that of its artist. My role is to ensure that the Sanctuary welcomes everyone, and especially those who suffer; among them, victims of abuse and sexual assault, children and adults. In Lourdes, the tried and wounded people who need consolation and reparation must keep first place. This is the true grace this Sanctuary: nothing must prevent them from responding to the message of Our Lady inviting them to come on pilgrimage. Because this has become impossible for many, my personal opinion is that it would be preferable to remove these mosaics.

This option does not have widespread support. It even meets with real opposition from some: the subject arouses passions. Today, the best decision to make is not yet mature, and my conviction regarding the decision, which would not be sufficiently understood, would add even more division and anger.

I will therefore continue to work even more with victims, to discern what should be done, here in Lourdes, to honour the absolute requirement of consolation and reparation.

From now on, and in a concrete way, I have decided that these mosaics will no longer be highlighted as they were until now by the play of light during the Marian procession that brings together pilgrims every evening. This is a first step. We will discern, with the people of good will who agree to help us, the following steps.

It is up to me as "Guardian of the Grotto", and beyond the specific question of the future of these mosaics, to move forward concretely, again and again in welcoming victims and all the wounded, fragile and poor people to Lourdes. This will be my work for the months to come, with those who agree to continue to help me.

I entrust this situation to the mercy of God and to the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Bernadette.

🙏🏻 OCTOBER PILGRIMAGE TO FATIMA 🙏🏻

On the 13th of May 1917 Our Lady appeared to three little shepherds while they were watching over their flocks at a place called Cova da Iria in central Portugal, now known as Fatima.

The three children, Lucia de Jesus (10), and her cousins Francis (8) and Jacinta Marto (7) had already been prepared for the arrival of Our Lady by the visit of an Angel during the spring, summer and autumn of 1916.

The Angel of Peace (or Angel of Portugal), as the Angel is now called, gave an urgent request for continued prayer and this was later re-enforced by Our Lady’s insistence for greater devotion to the Rosary. Many pilgrims from all over the world, sometimes up to one million at a time, make the pilgrimage to Fatima on the 12th and 13th of the months of May-October to pray to our Lady of Fatima.

WHILE IN FATIMA, YOUR PROVISIONAL PILGRIMAGE INCLUDES:

* Walking tour of the Sanctuary with visits to the Chapel of Apparitions, the Rosary Basilica and the new Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity
* Concelebrated Mass as the Chapel of the Apparitions and participation in all the ceremonies, including the daily 9:30pm International Rosary and torchlight procession
* International Mass on the 13th and the Adieu to Our Lady with the waving of white handkerchiefs, a tradition at the closing of the ceremonies
* Visit to Fatima parish church, Valinhos, Cabesco and the village of Aljustrel to see the homes of the children
* There will be lots of free time throughout the pilgrimage for personal devotions and for shopping

❓Did you know? ❓

Saint Therese, like her older sisters, became devoted to religion from an early age, joining the Carmélite convent in Lisieux at just 15 years of age. She devoted her life to religion, produced many spiritual writings and became one of the best-loved Catholic figures of her century. Saint John Paul II declared her the 33rd Doctor of the Catholic Church because of her spiritual writings. This is an exceptional honour, as she was the first woman to receive this title.

Fr. Leo Illah CSSP is leading a 2 - night pilgrimage by coach to Lisieux in September, where you will walk on the footsteps of St. Therese. Visits include: Les Buissonettes which was St. Therese’s home in Lisieux and where she saw the statue of the Blessed Virgin smiling at her, causing her conversion; the Carmel Chapel; and the magnificent Basilica of St. Therese.
