🏖️| Durdle Door is probably the most famous stone arch anywhere in the world. It was created when the sea pierced through the Portland limestone around 10,000 years ago. Looking west over the beach, isolated stacks out at sea show where an older coastline once lay.
⛱️| The magnificent natural limestone arch was formed when the power of the waves eroded the rock and forged a hole through the middle. The name Durdle is derived from an old English word ‘thirl’, which means to pierce, bore or drill.
🪨| The rocks are approximately 140 million years old. The structure is about 200 feet tall. The first time it appeared on the Ordnance Survey Map, way back in 1811, it was called Dirdale Door.
