Back at my desk after spending the last 7 days in Doha, Qatar. I've visited the UAE many times so I was interested to see how Qatar would compare.
Doha is more traditional and laidback than its neighbour Dubai - in terms of luxury hotels per sqm Dubai is hard to beat. However, Doha also offers some fantastic hotels and if you want luxury, the amazing architecture of the Katara towers, home to Raffles and the Fairmont is the place to stay.

Doha is super friendly and less flashy than Dubai with lots of public areas.The Pearl is fantastic for eating out and resembles a little Venice. Souq Waqif is a must visit especially of an evening when locals and tourists gather to eat and shop.
Doha also features a waterpark to rival Atlantis. The recently opened Meyral Waterpark features the worldโ€™s tallest waterside, Vertigo, a whopping 76.35 metres. Needless to say I didnโ€™t do that one!

Continuing with the adrenaline ju**ie theme, we loved our dune bashing trip to the desert which was great fun. You'll find Khor Al Adaid here, the inland sea, a Unesco World Heritage Site that is one of Qatarโ€™s natural wonders. One of very few places in the world where sweeping desert sand dunes meet the sparkling seas.
Overall Doha is a great alternative to Dubai, especially at the moment while the rates are competitive!

My enthusiasm for all things travel has given me a very happy and successful 27-year career, working for leading travel companies and arranging bespoke itineraries that span the globe.

My curiosity for travel has been there from a young age and I can remember as a child looking at the airport departure boards and thinking where can we go next? The excitement of visiting a new destination has never diminished.

Iโ€™ve been lucky enough to travel to over 50 countries across six continents. From horseback riding in Argentina, climbing Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, to hot air ballooning across the Serengeti. If you have that trip of a lifetime planned itโ€™s likely that Iโ€™ve visited it!
