Hello November...

November will be an amazing month for many of my clients with lots of exciting departures and a huge range of destinations... it's the kind of destinations that I just adore and remember myself why travel is such a big passion... 🥰🌍

⭐ Grace + Merci, Swellendam ⭐

We arrived at the gorgeous Schoone Oordt at lunch time and I headed to reception to ask if they had any local restaurant recommendation for us and they recommended grace+merci as they had a playground for kids to play.
So off we went without checking any reviews but only by trusting the lovely Steffanie.

Whilst kids played in the outdoor playground we ordered from the restaurant menu and explored the shop with so many nice artisanal products.
They have a breakfast menu available all day, but Daniela ordered one of the traditional woodfire toasties (roosterkoek), I ordered Steak + Egg + Chips, kids ordered Spaghetti Bolognese & Mac + Cheese from the kids menu, plus drinks and we waited.
When the food came, it was homemade, beautifully presented and it was EXCEPTIONAL! The bill? £30! I couldn't believe it.
It was the best meal we had in all restaurants we tried in South Africa and I have to say we never had a bad meal there.
Grace + Merci is very family friendly and they only use the freshest, best quality local ingredients available.
They also bake daily, don't serve leftovers, the staff and the locals were so friendly and we loved it.

It’s a BIG thumbs up from me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Next to Grace + Merci, every Saturday morning there is the 'Oaks Market' where you can shop for local produce, crafts, and artisanal goods while enjoying live music.

There’s a vibrant food culture in Swellendam too, with more restaurants than one would ordinarily find in a town of this size, offering everything from boerekos (traditional farmers’ food) to coffee shops serving delectable cakes, to fine-dining experiences.

🇵🇹 Cape of Good Hope 🇿🇦

The Cape of Good Hope, located at the southern tip of Africa, played a crucial role in the history of Portugal, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The discovery of the Cape of Good Hope by the Portuguese Bartolomeu Dias in 1488 was crucial for the opening of a sea route to India and the new route facilitated trade between Portugal and the East.

Since primary school, I heard about the 'Cabo das Tormentas' (Cape of Storms) like a remote place, reachable only by intrepid navigators. When I was little, I was thrilled to read the stories of the Portuguese Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama in search of the sea route to the Indies.

Earlier this month I ticked the 'Cape of Good Hope' off my bucket list and fulfilled my childhood dream of seeing the tip of Africa.

I was in awe of the harsh weather and rough tides (so different just a few miles away) that I saw here and I reflected on the Portuguese expeditions when part of the story of “Os Lusíadas” by Luís de Camões came to my mind. Created by the poet, the supernatural monster Adamastor had frightened the captains of the adventurous ships for daring to reach the Cape of Storms.
And I'm glad they did because crossing this Cape had far-reaching effects on global trade and cultural exchange, shaping the world as we know it today. ♥🌍

⭐ Breakfast in The Conservatory ⭐

Breakfasts at Schoone Oordt Country House are made with love and passion.
All ingredients are local and seasonal and the menu may vary slightly depending on availability.
Imagine a 3-course gourmet meal where each guest is served at the table.
We started with their homemade granola and double cream plain yoghurt as well as freshly pressed orange juice.
Followed by a platter of local cheeses & charcuterie and freshly baked scones/muffins, then a choice of “starter” & main.
Everything exceeded our expectations (literally!) but I already said and I will say it again, the vanilla poached pears were the most delicious course of any breakfast I had in the world.
Alison & her team created a masterpiece and this breakfast was an experience that I will never forget.

♥ 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺, 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 ♥

The Garden Route is South Africa’s most iconic road trip and there is a gorgeous little town called Swellendam that lies in the Overberg region halfway between Cape Town and the start of the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, which makes it an ideal and charming stop-over.
It's also close to the Tradouw Pass, which leads to the famous R62 road and the Little Karoo for a family friendly safari at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.

But Swellendam is so much more than just a stop-over!
It is the third oldest settlement in South Africa with many charming historical buildings and vast surroundings to explore.
With a beautiful mountain backdrop and the languid Breede River on its doorstep, we found the town has many restaurants (more to come on this!), shops, ice cream parlours, delis, art galleries, a large white church & many friendly locals.
I was completely blown away by how relaxing and authentic Swellendam is!
We visited the interesting Drostdy Museum, home to a vast collection of artifacts and exhibits that showcase the history of Swellendam and its people.
There is also a Berry Farm with Berry Picking, Liqueur Tasting & Tractor Rides for a nice family day out but unfortunately we didn't have time to visit as we only stayed one night so I definitely recommend a two night stop here at the start/end of an epic road trip.

My clients were looking for last-minute Christmas market inspiration and I told them all about Budapest as it's one of my favourite European cities.
Budapest is not short on fun activities, places to visit, relaxing baths and a very good Christmas market that I visited a few years ago.

Instead of the Euro, Hungary is on the Forint, which is much weaker than the Euro, so a few drinks n Budapest’s famous night life won’t be setting you back far!
The conversion rate works for Hungarian food, too, which shouldn’t be missed out on! Soup, stews, dumplings make up a large staple of a Hungarian diet, and a delicious meal can be purchased for as little as £5!

🇿🇦 South Africa & Mauritius 🇲🇺

The ‘Big Trip’ is over and we are back home.
It will take a few days to get over the holiday blues…

We first flew to Cape Town and explored the Western Cape.
A revolving cable car whisked us right up to the top of Table Mountain, we had fun at the brilliant Two Oceans Aquarium, said hello to the penguins at Boulders Beach and seals at V&A Waterfront, honoured our ancestors at Cape of Good Hope, experienced the Hop-On Hop-Off Wine Tram to visit family-friendly wineries, went back in time visiting the Drostdy museum in stunning Swellendam, ticked breathtaking Sanbona off my bucket list and saw four of the 'Big 5' plus had the privilege of a once in a lifetime 'bush walk', meters away from a Cheetah in our first family safari.
We drove more than 500 miles in scenic roads in pretty good condition in our fantastic 4x4 pick up hired truck and always felt safe.
We were treated like family and indeed experienced first class hospitality and delicious food.
South Africa stole my Heart and we will be going back when Oliver is older.

Then, I surprised the kids at the airport and we flew to Mauritius instead of coming back home.
Mauritius is my top selling destination, so I thought would be perfect to update my product and destination knowledge after my first visit in 2017 and for us to relax after an hectic first part of our trip.

Mauritius is so much more than a beach holiday. It's vibrant and very different from coast to coast.
We stayed in the West & North but also explored the East and the South.
We swam in turquoise lagoons, felt the warm sea, saw monkeys, dolphins, sea turtles, giant tortoises, fruit bats, tropical fish, colourful birds, wonderful waterfalls and geological formations but also went to the markets, sampled the local street food and everyone enjoyed amazing beachfront hotels with fantastic facilities such as infinity pools and kids clubs where children played tag and hopscotch but also learned kite making or had fun on pirate treasure hunts. Kids loved it.

I wanted my children to have a go at exploring the world with wonder and curiosity and we had an amazing time in South Africa & Mauritius.

🌴 Zilwa Attitude, Mauritius 🌴

For our last nights in Mauritius I chose Attitude Hôtel . Here’s why…

Back in April 2020 we were in lockdown, so one day I told Sophia & Tomas we were going to Gran Zil for a picnic. They asked “Gran Zil? What is Gran Zil?
It’s a special island in Mauritius that we go by boat and have a beach BBQ."
I promised them we would go there when we could. So we did.

It's on the North Coast of Mauritius, 15 minutes from Grand Baie which makes it great to explore.

The view to 'Coin de Mire' & the Lagoon from the lobby and adult only infinity pool is super special.
The heated pool is amazing and we spent most of the time there but there are two other excellent pools for children.
We stayed in the deluxe family suite which is basically a two bedroom apartment with two bathrooms and garden/seaview from the balcony.
Gran Zil's BBQ lunch is fantastic and provides a great day out. (part of the all inclusive but advance reservation is required).
The dining options are good and our favourite was Tadka, the Indian.
We also tried Manao (Thai), Taba-J (Mauritian Street food) & Lor Disab (Adults only at night but lunch buffet for everyone). We didn't go to Kot Nou because we tried it at Ravenala.
Good selection of drinks with Pool service.
The watersports options available are good. A live band/DJ every night.
The Kids club is complimentary to children from 3 to 12 and is open daily from 9am to 9pm.
Sophia and Tomas learned Sega Dancing, got a Henna Tattoo, cookies making, played mini golf, football, hopscotch, had fun at pool games, had a go at traditional fishing, did arts & crafts (from Kite making to recycled pencil holder & holiday card making) and went to the Taba-J for teatime with the other kids.
They loved Zilwa's kids club!
Oliver had a babysitter one morning so we could go to the Spa for a massage (extra charge and advance reservation required but at a very reasonable rate).

We made lots of happy memories at Zilwa and the winner of my referral competition is in for a real treat.

Mauritius is so much more than a beach destination with white sands, gorgeous Indian Ocean colours and the most beautiful sunsets but also a vibrant island with a rich cultural and natural diversity.

We tried the local cuisine, went on boat trips, haggled in the markets, saw waterfalls, gecko, tropical fish, dolphins, sea turtles, Aldabra giant tortoises, monkeys, fruit bats, snails, pretty birds with no fear and we’re having a great time exploring this stunning island.

JW Marriott Mauritius Resort is a 5 Star luxury hotel in Mauritius set against the backdrop of Le Morne mountain.

JW Marriott Mauritius Resort kindly invited our family to spend one day at the hotel and we experienced sublime service (attention to detail at the boathouse for lunch but also pool/beach service from the friendly staff to offer coconut water to adults and fruit kebabs to children. Very nice touch), exceptional food (one of the best ever desserts), stunning views of the Indian Ocean and direct access to the pristine Le Morne Beach.

One gorgeous main pool plus a smaller beachfront heated pool.

The kids club facilities are very good, including a great kids pool.

I also had the opportunity to check the ‘Manor House Spa Suite’ and wow! What a room!
It’s Luxury at every turn!

We had a fabulous day at JW Marriott Mauritius and the winner of my referral competition is in for a real treat.

🌴 Ravenala Attitude, Mauritius 🌴

For our first nights in Mauritius I chose Ravenala Attitude. Here’s why…

It’s on the west coast of Mauritius, famous for the stunning sunsets and not too far from the capital, Port Louis.

The hotel private sandy beach is small but very nice. No rocks or coral.
Two main pools plus another (huge) pool for children.
We stayed in a family suite but I also did a site visit to all hotel room types and I liked what I saw.
The dining options are fabulous, our favourite was Madame Ming, the Asian.
We also had meals at O (Mediterranean), Taba-J (Mauritian street food & the best ever lemonade), Kot Nou (Mauritian Tapas), Tavola (Italian), Bistro (Salads/Burgers) & Mozaik (Buffet with lots of local, international and live stations for breakfast, lunch and dinner). There are also two adult only restaurants so we didn’t try them: Lime (Sushi for lunch and Japanese for dinner) & Riviera (Seafood). These are not part of the all inclusive.
Good selection of drinks with Pool & Beach service.
The watersports options available are very good. Daily Aqua Gym in the morning and Yoga in the afternoon too. A live band every night.
The Kids club is complimentary to children from 3 to 12 and is open daily from 9am to 10pm which is fantastic in my opinion.
As part of the activities, Sophia & Tomas baked pizza, learned how to do mocktails, went on pirate treasure hunts, had fun at pool games, went to the cinema night, saw lots of fish on the glass bottom boat trip, had henna tattoo and did arts & crafts.
Oliver was able to use the facilities with adult supervision.

It’s a stunning hotel with so many palm trees, tropical birds and one of the prettiest sunsets of the island but what makes it special is the staff.
They work hard and always try to exceed clients expectations. They certainly exceeded mine.

It’s a BIG thumbs up from me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Clients are in Mauritius on a two week twin centre adventure and yesterday morning messaged me after arriving at the 2nd hotel to say they have checked in and received a FREE room upgrade to a Private Pool Villa with their very own terrace/sunbeds and if I had anything to do with it... As part of my personal travel bespoke service, when clients book with me, I always take note of any requests and as part of my pre-departure checklist and nearer departure/check in, I contact the hotels to re-confirm the reservation, transfer/arrival details, tell them of any possible requests, if possible to print a welcome card from myself, a bottle of wine/champagne in the room or a free room upgrade! What can go wrong? The worst that can happen is clients getting what they have booked and paid for, there’s nothing to lose really and is always worth to try, specially when you have a good relationship with hotels which is the case of this one.
