If you want a break from the pub, Christmas re-runs, kitchen stove or family... there are plenty of reasons to get outdoors.

❄️ Have a picnic: Swap the strawberries and sandwiches for some hot cider, soup and warm brownies. Food cooked or eaten outside somehow tastes so much better.

❄️ Go ice skating: They’re not just for Christmas, many of the ice rinks that pop up in November are still open in the New Year.

❄️ Go birdwatching: Winter is actually a great time to see a variety of birds in the UK, with many species migrating here to escape the colder weather further north. Look out for birds such as redwings, fieldfares, and waxwings.

❄️ Visit a National Trust property: Open year round, National Trust properties have beautifully kept gardens and parklands, some of which are dog friendly, many of which have fantastic cafes.

❄️ Winter walks: Grab your Ordnance Survey map or get to know your local parks. When the days are shorter it’s good to capture as much of the sunlight as you can, whilst the quiet solitude or unloveable British weather can foster some real camaraderie especially if it ends in a cosy pub.

‘It astounds me to be able to look at a map and know the square metre where my buttocks are deployed’ author Bill Bryson is a big fan of Ordnance Survey maps. As an American used to maps that only feature landscapes no smaller than, Pikes Peak, he loves that you can see every wrinkle and divot of the landscape, every barn, milestone, wind pump and tumulus. The most detailed maps distinguish between sand pits and gravel pits and between power lines strung from pylons and power lines strung from poles. They even include the stone seat which he was sitting on. OS Maps are a national treasure and a joy for ramblers, walkers, and explorers. We wanted to find out more about their origins so follow the link below for our chat with the Ordnance Survey team 🗺️🧭✨

Be super smug this Christmas by making your own presents. Something handmade and eco-friendly will just double the joy - it’s unique, thoughtful and the planet will appreciate it too 🌍✨

🎁Foragers, this is your time to shine. If you’re a fan of foraging, now is a great time to wrap up warm and head out to look for fruit. Bullace, a type of plum, makes a delicious jam and is in season at this time of year, as is rosehip. Or, why not opt for a crab apple or rowan jam? have a great recipe for tasty rosehip jam at home.

🎁Potpourri is easy to make and can be tailored to your family and friends, or for the season'. For a Christmassy scent, gather together oranges, cinnamon sticks, cranberries and star anise. Slice your oranges; dry them in the oven with the cranberries and then mix with star anise and cinnamon sticks. Pop them in a fabric bag tied with ribbon and you’re good to go!

🎁Sloe gin makes a lovely Christmas gift for the gin lover in your life. It’s simple to make, a great fruit to forage if you have any blackthorn bushes nearby and an afternoon spent making it is a relaxing way to pass the time before Christmas. Start now as it takes 2-3 months before it’s ready to drink.

🎁Homemade bath bombs are a great gift idea to ease you through those dark January nights. To make them, simply mix bicarbonate of soda, cream of tartar, olive oil and essential oils. For an extra touch, add dried flowers or herbs before transferring the mixture to ice cube trays or silicone moulds. Leave the bath bombs to set for a couple of days and then pop them out before packaging them up with some tissue paper.

🎁A bird feeder is a wonderful gift for nature lovers, particularly at this time of year when food is in short supply for our feathered friends. To create your own bird feeder, you can collect such edibles as sunflower seeds, breadcrumbs and moistened nuts to create a paste with some lard or dripping. Then, smooth the mixture onto a pine cone or half of a coconut shell to create a wonderful natural-looking bird feeder.

Also known as a Kelly, Storm, Survival and Volcano Kettle, this nifty device will boil water using only scraps of nature's debris - twigs, pine cones, dry grass or anything else you find lying about. It's small enough to carry easily and boils in 4/5 minutes even in the worst weather conditions thanks to its internal boiler chamber. Simply fill the internal chamber with twigs and let fly with the flames 🔥

Small, efficient and fun!

Tree hugging, Forest bathing, nature therapy. Trees are good for us. We know the role they play in climate change, natural habitats and soil erosion, but did you know they’re also fundamental to our happiness. We talk to Tree Consultant and Dendrologist Charlie Marsden about finding joy in our wooded landscapes and why it’s so important to protect them. The teepee is one of the first campfire lays anyone should learn. It’s easy to start, burns consistently and can be used to get things going for any kind of fire. So, how do you get started? Here’s how:

1. Start by placing the tinder bundle into the fire pit.
2. Build a cone over the tinder bundle by leaning small pieces of kindling against each other, making sure to leave gaps for air and a door to light the tinder.
3. Build a few more layers on the teepee with larger and larger kindling.
4. Light the tinder!
5. The teepee structure will eventually fall, and at this point you can simply add some more kindling to the fire.

We thought it was time for a little summer throwback. Rachel Cameron-Webb, founder of Rock the Jumpsuit takes us through her favourite festival looks and top tips from 2022.

I do LOVE a festival! There’s so much creativity, joy and diversity in our festival scene. The energy is extraordinary and it’s like being in a bubble of love - you forget everything that’s happening on the outside world – pure joy! I get serious festival fomo so if you do too – here are some of my highlights from 2022 to help re-live the fun!

✨ Ruby, Ruby, Ruby (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah) we had so many festival babes rockin our RUBY jumpsuits this year at Secret Garden Party, Wilderness and Glastonbury.

✨ Denim rocks! It’s durable, comfortable, easy to wash, soft and fitted. Think of it as your base and then dress it up – try mixing in a glitter cape, rockin belt or tassels on bags or jackets.

✨ Sequins amidst all that denim is ESSENTIAL.

✨ Layers are good for a festival – take one really good statement piece and layer it up with shearling coats, crop jackets and scarves.

✨ For me it’s all about being glam and comfortable. That’s why I love a jumpsuit even if that means getting naked in the loo!

✨ A fabulous belt will go with everything – try mixing vintage pieces with something new.

✨ Best festival moments for 2022 were at Noisily, Glastonbury, Medicine Festival and Secret Garden Party. All so different - but that’s the beauty of our festival scene.

Enough of the business talk, let’s get a drink! 🥂

Our company away days are not your average team-building exercise. On the one hand you're out of your comfort zone, in another fully kicking back in complete luxury. Going into the wild tends to lead to more creative thinking. Get out of the box and think out of it too.

We are all outdoor people at heart. Your team just might not know it yet 😂

Ever tucked into a juicy Chisel Jersey, Merry Legs or Slack-ma-Girdle? If not, you might be more familiar with the more common varieties of apple - Braeburn, Pippin or Pink Lady. The classic green Granny Smith was supposedly named after Marie Ann Smith who emigrated from Australia in 1839. She earned the nickname after purchasing a small orchard and becoming a prominent local figure.

Now she’s celebrated in the new Big Feastival Apple Field, where you can glamp or just camp in a row of Pitmason Pineapple, Somerset Redstreak or Nova Spy.
