To kick off we have @Gusbournewines One of the UK’s leading winemakers and our sparkling wine partner. We chat to head winemaker Charlie Holland and Master Sommelier Laura Rhys about the launch of Fifty One Degrees North. With just under 4,000 bottles produced and at £195 per bottle, it is the most expensive prestige English sparkling wine on the market.
✨What is Fifty One Degrees North and why is it so special?
Gusbourne’s premier prestige cuvée named after the position of their vineyards in Kent and West Sussex. It’s a blend of two-thirds Chardonnay and one-third Pinot Noir and was aged 80 months on lees. It reflects eight years of tasting and monitoring behind the scenes and is Gusbourne’s most ambitious wine to date. Charlie Holland, head winemaker at Gusbourne said ”Everything that goes into this wine is the best of what we can do, the best part of the fruit, and afterwards, when you come to blending, the most expressive components.’’
✨What’s the best way to enjoy 51°?
Master Sommelier Laura Rhys recommends serving it in a wider wine glass to allow the breadth of aromas and flavours to develop more fully. As for temperature, Laura demurs to the Goldilocks rule: neither too warm nor too cold. “I would suggest taking the bottle out of the fridge 10 to 15 minutes before you’re going to serve it – it will release more aromas and show more of its character as the chill begins to ebb.”
