San Marino. With a population of 35k just slightly smaller than Liechtenstein with 39k. I'd like to say it's better protected than Liechtenstein in this hilly territory. The Swiss Army occasionally ends up on Liechtenstein territory by accident (one of my favourite reads whenever it makes the news 😂). I have to admit I didn't research if the same happens to the Italian Army 😉

A lady at a shop asked me if I liked San Marino. Historical, lovely to walk around, everybody is friendly, well-organised for the tourist crowds that must descend at times, judging from the amount of available parking space, and tax-free shopping. What's not to like? It's one of those places that makes history easy to imagine for non-historians 💖 6 months of travelling, however, make you a bit of a minimalist. We didn't even stop at the outlet. The Prada bag in the motorhome just doesn't work.

And by now I've googled if the Italian Army ever accidentally invades San Marino. Result 0. Same search for Switzerland and Liechtenstein 5 😂

Enjoy the read!

We're nearly back where we were on this trip in April (we went the long way 😉).

We revisited Renaissance Italy, this time with Michelangelo's Birthplace in Caprese Michelangelo and Raphael's Birthplace in Urbino. ❤️

Isn't it mind-blowing that this period produced Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, but also Botticelli, Titian and so many other renowned artists sort of at the same time? And as Alaric would say, don't forget Donatello. His frame of reference are the ninja turtles though 😂

We left Rome and the heat and ended up on the most magical hilltop above Assisi with horses galopping past the motorhome and duvets needed to sleep - both slightly unexpected 😁 I've never been to Umbria before, but it's gorgeous ❤️

I've wanted to visit Assisi for a long time, I'm not even quite sure why. It was a steep climb from the parking, but step by step we got up, always being aware that Long COVID isn't always so keen on my sightseeing plans and I need to closely watch my heart rate.

The Basilica of St Francis was absolutely beautiful and we took our time to visit it 💖

Alaric has learned to appreciate lemon granitas when it's this hot, so with granitas in hand we eventually made our way back down. Funnily enough, my heart liked this a lot better 🙃

Rome 💓 I hadn't realised how long I hadn't been here, but it was lovely to be back and explore.

Surprisingly peaceful camperstop with everything you need right near a tram stop in Centocelle.

The crowds were insane, the sights as gorgeous as ever - so many memories of so many times here as a kid and later as a student. The city doesn't seem as big as it used to after living in London though - in the best way possible 😁

Pompeii, the reason for my 9 years of Latin at school 😁 I'll never get tired of coming here and mooching around in the ruins 💖 In the first memories I have from here I'm about 9 😊

Granita is a life saver in the sun 🌞 And what do you do after sightseeing? You throw yourself in the water on the Amalfi Coast 💖

The "Sassi di Matera", the rocks of Matera, originated in a prehistoric settlement. These dwellings are thought to be among the first ever human settlements in what is now Italy.

The little streets and corners reminded me a lot of San Donato Val di Comino, the village where my family is from. After 2 months of travelling, I now can't wait to get there on Sunday 💖

We arrived late at night from the ferry from Igoumenitsa/Brindisi. The camper stop 'Nel Verde' in the centre of Alberobello technically closes at 9pm, but the gentleman kindly came out to sort us out for the night.

It's worthwhile heading out early if you like to take pictures and generally not that many people. We had a lovely walk, a mooch around the souvenir shops and just generally enjoyed being back in Italy after a - wonderful - month in Greece. I missed the pizza 🍕

The 'trulli', the houses, are quite remarkable in their architecture and historical significance. We were able to see one from inside (also many are restaurants or cafés), it was surprisingly spacious and I'd expect the build to keep you cool on hot summer days 🥵

Magical Meteora in Central Greece 💖

6 out of the original 24 monasteries still exist, 4 for men, 2 for women.

Very easy to see them all. A tiny bit harder to visit some of them, at least if you have fear of heights and aren't necessarily at the top of your fitness levels 😉

Seeing the sun set over the rock formations and the monasteries is beautiful, albeit a bit crowded 😊

One of our favourite places in 2 months of travelling 🇬🇷

We arrived superearly in Palermo. Due to my Long COVID we're not spending a lot of time in cities, so we apologised to Palermo for not staying, promised to be back when I'm better on foot and instead went to see the temple and amphitheatre at Segesta 🏛️ We had a quick nap (the 4am alarm had taken its toll) and made breakfast, then the gates opened 💖

We really enjoyed this site and it was still early, so we continued to Selinunte where the sun decided to make an unexpected appearance 🙏

We used the kindness of the weather gods for a good mooch around the temples and the acropolis, finishing with a lovely Italian ice-cream 🍦☀️🌴

Our favourite stop - as so unique to Sardinia - on the way from North to South was the Nuraghe Losa near Abbasanta Built in the 14th and 13th century BC, research is uncertain what its purpose was and there are some 7,000 of these nuraghes on the island, albeit most not as complex or less well preserved.

We're currently at the Agricamping Il Ruscello, not to be confused with the Agriturismo of the same name, in Sant'Anna Arresi. We've been cycling around the lagoon, saw the flamingos and swam in the crystal clear water. Magical 🦩

We found paradise at 'I Pini' (The Pine Trees), Palombaggia Beach, Porto-Vecchio. Off for a morning swim in a minute 🌴
