Top day up at a snowy High Leas Farm looking for wintering birds - good numbers of Redwing & Blackbird feasting on the Holly Berries, Siskin & Redpoll in the Birches, a smart male Brambling, 14 Bullfinch, 4 Meadow Pipit, 2 Skylark over & 4 species of raptor included this lovely Kestrel 😍

I frequently see various numbers quoted for the decline of Swifts, and it is not always clear what period is referred to.
So I dug out the UK numbers from https://www.bto.org/our-science/projects/breeding-bird-survey/latest-results/population-trend-graphs and produced the table below.

Alarmingly, the annual decline for the last 10 years is now nearly 7%

If this is true, with an official estimate of the number of pairs of Swifts in the UK in 2009 of 87,000 pairs, meaning 35,900 in 2023.
We are still losing 2492 pairs per year.

Of course, we know that the official population estimate is low - probably by a factor of 10 or more (see BB paper https://britishbirds.co.uk/journal/article/are-we-underestimating-uk-common-swift-population)

So we may be losing more like 25,000 pairs each year.

Do we put up that many nest boxes every year?

A weekend away with friends in Malaga but managed a couple of hours urban birding this morning. At least 10 Cattle Egret were picking over the flood debris with a few Little Egret and Yellow Legged Gulls. Great to pick up several Black Redstart including a cracking singing male & a Serin was only my second ever. Lunch by the sea with the ever present Monk Parakeets for a backing track 😍 BirdLife International
