Nice guided walk with a lovely group at Carsington this morning, cold and quiet but some great views of displaying Goldeneye, grazing Wigeon, Pochard, Gadwall, a brief Willow Tit, a Great Black Backed Gull and a pair of recently returned Oystercatcher amongst others - poor visibility meant the Divers remained elusive this time!

Top day guiding in the Matlock area today - Hawfinch were on the wish list and we found 3 birds at Cromford along with the ever obliging Dipper pair, 2 Goosander and Kestrel to entertain us in between views.

5 Crossbill and a hunting Gos later in the day were the icing on the cake!

Great to a lead a walk round a beautifully crisp Nottingham Road Cemetery on behalf of Friends of Nottingham Road Cemetery - Derby this morning, a cracking turn out were treated to some top birds with highlights being 2 Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Buzzard, one of our regular Kestrels, Sparrowhawk, Treecreeper, 6+ Greenfinch, Song Thrush, Redwing and a single Fieldfare was the 1st of the winter here. A distant skein of c60 Pink Footed Geese heading NW was also spotted by a few of the group.

Red-Throated Diver at Carsington Water today was a county ✔️ for me and showed wonderfully well at times. The regular wintering Great Northern Diver was also present as were the Scaup too, as well as a great selection of other wildfowl (Goldeneye, Wigeon, Pochard, Gadwall, Teal and Grebes) with a Willow Tit and Cetti's Warbler at Millfields and a Red Kite over - a good day's birding at this superb site! 😊

Great walk with a lovely group this morning and I'm so pleased that everyone managed to get a good look at a couple of Hawfinch at Cromford early on along with a showy, singing Dipper, a beautiful Kingfisher, an obliging Kestrel and plenty more. It's a shame that Crossbill remained elusive but you can't win em all!

No gift ideas? No problem! Our e-vouchers will be with you the same day so no worrying about delivery dates either 😉 👇

Join us on Sunday 8th December for a relaxing stroll round the cemetery as we look for the bird species that use this fantastic green space in winter.

With our summer visitors long gone a whole new variety of bird species along with many of our favourite residents will be busy using this important site for finding food and shelter during the hardest months of the year.

The Warblers and Hirundines have been replaced by visiting winter Thrushes from Scandinavia and mainland Europe and a mix of Redwings, Fieldfares and migrant Blackbirds should be busy looking for any berries that remain - much to the irritation of our local Mistle Thrushes!

The numbers and variety of Finches using the cemetery will have increased too with Siskin and Lesser Redpoll feeding on any seeds or catkins available alongside increasing numbers of Goldfinch, Chaffinch and Greenfinch. The much scarcer Hawfinch has already been recorded here this winter - will we get lucky again?

The leafless trees will also make it easier to see our smaller bird species on the move as mixed flocks of T**s will be foraging widely with the chance of Treecreeper, Nuthatch, Goldcrest and possibly a wintering Chiffchaff joining the throng - all these small birds might attract the attention of our resident Sparrowhawks too.

There will be a spotting scope for us all to use and a couple of pairs of binoculars that can be borrowed but please bring your own if you have them.

Duration: c2 hours

How to Book

As usual the walk will be led by Anthony Pooles. www.naturalderbyshiretours.uk

To book, free of charge, please email direct to [email protected]

Numbers will be limited so please book early.

We will be meeting at the chapel buildings at 8.30am for an 8.45am start.
The main car park will be opened early.

Keep an eye on the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Adverse conditions such as heavy rain, thick fog or snow may lead to the walk being postponed but we will try to give you as much notice as possible if this looks likely.

Event is free of charge but donations welcomed.
Thank you for your support.

Can you spot the pair of green woodpeckers in the photo?
