The majestic river valleys of the Rhine and Mosel (or Moselle) are famous for their vine-clad slopes, fairy tale castles, and picturesque riverside towns. They are never better than in early October when the banks are ablaze with autumn colours and you have a fair chance of calling in on one of the autumn wine festivals. ⠀

This is Germany’s primary wine producing region (predominantly Riesling) with the oldest vineyards going back to the Roman era. The wine festivals in the regions around Rhine and Mosel are a pure pleasure. Streets, lanes and squares are decorated, garlands of leaves and coloured ribbons bedeck the wine stalls. The air is full of music and the scent of wine. Often, there are colourful processions through the villages to celebrate the pleasure of wine and its traditions.⠀

One of the most relaxing ways to explore the region is of course by river cruise. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to operators and itineraries so it can often be tricky to choose. Depending on your choice, your trip may include visits to:⠀

- Trier, the oldest city in Germany, famous for its Roman amphitheatre, baths and the imposing Porta Nigra, the huge fortified gate that formed the eastern border of the Roman Empire.⠀
- Beautiful Cochem with half timbered houses, fairy tale castle, and a chair lift up to the Pinnerkreuz lookout point with eye-popping views
- Unesco listed Koblenz at the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel rivers.⠀
- Boppard, known as ‘the Pearl of the Rhine’ with its popular autumn wine festival⠀
- Rüdesheim am Rhein, one of the most beautiful wine towns in Germany where you can sit and sip local riesling and pinot noir in the Medieval setting of Drosselgasse.⠀
- Cologne to see the stunning cathedral with the most intricate stained glass in Europe.⠀

For the ultimate experience, our partners at Tauck offer an extremely luxurious 14-day river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, following the enchanting Rhine and Mosel rivers through Germany, France and Luxembourg

Cruising from Munich to Basel? Why not take a couple of days before you cruise and explore Munich and the surrounding area. Visit BMW World and the Munich Castle. You can't miss Neuschwanstein Castle - With its towers, turrets, frescoes, and throne hall, Neuschwanstein (or Schloss Neuschwanstein, as it is called in German) looks like it was plucked straight from your favorite fairy tale. It is rumored to be real-life inspiration for the castle in the Disney classic, "Cinderella," released in 1950. The resemblance, after all, is striking.⠀

King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned the cliffside castle in 1868, just two years after Austria and Bavaria were conquered by Prussia during the Austro-Prussian War⠀

Why not travel in the Autumn, when the Bavarian Alps are transformed by autumn foliage, temperatures are mild, skies are relatively clear, and the summer crowds have dissipated.⠀
⠀.. and then jump on an cruise down the

Cesky Krumlov , in the Czech Republic, with it's UNESCO 13th century castle featuring Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, together with an 11 heactare garden and 17th century Baroque Theatre is simply not to be missed. It was incredibly fortunate to have avoided bombings that decimated much of Bohemia.⠀

The town is bisected by the Vltava River and takes a 90 minute coach drive from your nearest port so cruise lines usually offer this as a full day excursion - you may not feel like that extra time travelling, but it's well worth it for the views over the old town from the Bell Tower of the castle.⠀

Quite a few Cruiselines offer the full day excursion as part of your fare including .luxurycruisetours, .global or . Taking a River Cruise from Munich to Budapest via Vienna takes in Cesky Kremlov as well as An Imperial Evening at a private Vienna palace with dinner and classical performers - a Tauck Exclusive⠀

Straddling the Main River, scenic Wurzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. The highlight is the Residenz, one of Germany's finest baroque buildings, though there's plenty more including the beautiful cathedral. The town is located in Bavaria, Germany and is known for its medieval architecture, art galleries, museums and castles. ⠀

Much of the history of the city centres around the Prince Bishops and their two main homes over the centuries: the Marienberg Fortress and the Residence Palace. You'll have the opportunity to explore both on a Main Danube River Cruise with
