This year we have made it our mission to find all the best walks for our guests.

Today we conquered the Matterhorn of the North - Roseberry Topping. A site of special scientific interest, the birthplace of Captain Cook and where he took inspiration for his worldly travels!

We definitely felt like we were on top of the world with incredible views of North Yorkshire and the Northern sea. A steady climb on well trodden paths, dog friendly, child friendly (lots of little ones & big ones), plenty of parking and just 30 -45 minute drive from the Coach House & Stables.

We loved it!

Light is relaxing & healing.
Light is energising & life giving.

Light was a crucial component in the design of the Coach House & Stables and there are a total of 49 windows throughout bathing you in beautiful, life enhancing Yorkshire sun light.

31 windows wrap around the coach house bringing light from all angles.

The original 8 stable windows face West to catch the golden evening light.

The 7 roof lights flood the rooms with a soft northern light and all have automated open/close to regulate temperature and blinds.

2 impressive floor to ceiling panels between the stables & coach house create a striking feature with an important purpose - light!

A huge pane of glass above the stairs wasn’t on the original plan but is a feature we both fight over, on whose idea it was!

And there is one window you will never see! In the plant room!

The best place to eat a yorkshire pudding, is of course in Yorkshire!

Did you know the first recipe for a Yorkshire pudding was published in 1737 as ‘a Dripping pudding’ in Sir Alexander William George Cassey's book The Whole Duty of a Woman?

But that it was Hannah Glasse in her book published in 1747 that first called it the Yorkshire Pudding.

Tradition has it in Yorkshire families that the Yorkshire pudding is served as a first course with onion gravy - something that surprised me when I first joined James’ family for a Sunday roast. Being from the south- we served as part of the main course!

Our sons’ favourite way to eat them when they were little was with ice cream and golden syrup!

My top tip for the best Yorkshire pudding is a very hot oven and if you love to cook, in the Coach House we have the oven professional cooks love to use - a beautiful SMEG Portofino double oven to cook your own.

Hello! We are ‘The Mortimers’ - the family behind Unique Escapes.

We fell in love with this Grade 2 listed property in January 2017 but actually didn’t start renovating the old almost derelict coach house until the autumn of 2019.

James is the visionary behind the project. He has incredible spacial awareness and spent hours pouring over plans with architects ensuring every room was flooded with light and felt spacious. He spent months sourcing the right tiles, bricks and stairs, baths and kitchens.

Ali is the creative once everything is in place. An eye for detail and colour. Blending contemporary, modern luxury living with classic style.

Our sons were the voices of honesty throughout the project - living at home in lockdown it was a regular evening practice to comment on progress as we sat on the field bench….

We are so proud of the building, the house, the luxury home we have created.

And we love welcoming guests to enjoy it too…
