✈️ Exciting update!

Air Canada will launch four weekly flights between Montreal and Porto starting in summer 2025. This will be the airline’s first direct route to Porto and its third to Portugal. This new connection further strengthens the ties between Canada and Portugal, making travel even more accessible.

Salted cod…another thing we Maritmers have in common with our Portuguese friends…

How ironic is it that Portugal's most traditional dishes are made with bacalhau (dried salted cod), which is not even fished in Portuguese waters?

Historically, the cod was fished in very distant lands, like Greenland and Newfoundland (Grand Banks). My dad, grandfather and uncles were cod fisherman leaving the family for 6 months at a time to fish for cod. My dad's first fishing trip was at the age of 14. Imagine that!! In total, he completed over 20 fishing trips to the Grand Banks all the way from Portugal. I do miss hearing my dad tell me about his adventures during his cod fishing days! He had some great stories to tell about those times.

Salting the cod was a means of preserving the fish for so many months, thus ending up with salt cod (bacalhau). It's no wonder I have such a love for bacalhau since it has always been a staple in my family's home! And I love that there are so many different ways to prepare it, every single one of them delicious!!

With Christmas Eve coming up in less than a month, a time when the Portuguese traditionally eat a Bacalhau dinner, I will be sharing a few of my favorite ways to prepare it in the upcoming weeks. You can also find several Bacalhau recipes in my cookbook, For the Love of Portuguese Food. Although the traditional way to serve it is boiled on Christmas Eve, many opt to also serve it prepared other ways. No matter which way you serve it, it's a wonderful tradition to carry on!
