Dan the Merman I Earra-Ghàidheal Air a’ bhlàr a-muigh // In the great outdoors Fàilte oirbh! I am Dan the Merman, an experienced nature guide across the west coast of Scotland.
(34)

Based between the Sound of Jura and Loch Fyne in Earra-Ghàidheal, I love to be air a' bhlàr a-muigh.. in the great outdoors. Principally a swim/snorkel guide and coach, I have a unique holistic approach to the experiences I offer. From wellbeing retreats to awe-inspiring Hebridean adventures, I adopt techniques and strategies built over a decade which aim to encourage sèimh, a state of calm. If yo

u'd like to explore majestic west coast waters for a guided walk, develop skills with a professional STA open water coaching experience or a guided swim/snorkel with RLSS open water safety cover, then you can join me to immerse in the Argyll Hope Spot

This is a unique marine protected area and first of its kind in Scotland. I work closely with this community led initiative across Loch Sween, the Sound of Jura and Loch Sunart. Discover the natural wonders of the "coast of the Gael" through the lens of a Gael. I am passionate about the indigenous language and culture of our coastline, Gàidhlig - Gaelic, and enjoy sharing knowledge of its intrinsic connection to nature. I tell stories drawn from the waters and land that we immerse in to provide an authentic sense of place. I collaborate with a variety of businesses and organisations across Argyll to offer retreats, holidays and sailing adventures. 🩷 Tha na sìthean an seo

🩷 The fairies are here

These powerful flowers have started blooming right across the coastlines of Gaeldom. With the properties for both medicinal healing and death to humans, this is reflected in its most common Gaelic name: Lus nam ban-sìth - ‘plant of the fairy women’.

A flower to be revered and it’s incredibly bad luck to cut down at the root.. or risk the wrath of the fairy people.

The fairies are also here to remind us of the importance of the ecosystem that this species upholds. It’s a wildlife sanctuary as the tubular flowers are a siren call to bees and other pollinators, very much a chief pollinator.

Perfectly designed for the bees to do their good work, the fairies in their stewardship of the environment have left finger prints on the inside of the tubular flower to guide the bees to the nectar.

Lus nam ban-sìth is so much more than a pretty flower along the coasts, forests and moorland. Through the Gaelic lens, it’s a portal to understanding the interconnectedness and magic of the world around us.

Là Buidhe Bealltainn ☀️🌼💛

‘Twas a smashin’ weekend just past to mark the traditional heralding of the summer months. ‘Swim with the Seasons’ at The Pierhouse Hotel 🌊 🏊‍♂️ 🦞 🥃 as featured in last month’s Outdoor Swimmer Magazine.

This day would mark the point to start thinking about heading for the àirigh (a simple temporary summer dwelling) to pasture cattle on higher ground. Or making the most of the increasingly longer days and warmer weather.

While I might not have a flock of my own or an àirigh to head to, my ebb and flow will now be increasingly on the flow side - heading out across the coastline of Argyll & Islands to explore, guide and who knows what else! 🌊 ⛰️ Doing things and going to places that I suppose wouldn’t be typical during winter.

So I think these turning points in the wheel of the year and the folklore attached to them can still hold relevance for us in a modern day context. A way of honouring local culture which keeps us anchored to the rhythm and flow of nature 🌍

What do ye think?

I’ll be back here to herald in the winter season at the end of October 26/27 for Samhain. Limited spaces available! Contact the Pierhouse Hotel reservations team to book.

🌊 Ealain àrainneachd agus lèirsinn airson an ama ri teachd.

Working on the Argyll Hope Spot Artist Snorkel Residency is always a highlight of my season. Be sure to check out what will be an inspiring exhibition, from the brilliant 2023 cohort in Glasgow this spring!

I had the privilege of being the open water coach, managing safety and snorkel guide for this incredible group of creative sea lovers. For the first time last year I also acted as a cultural guide in an official capacity. I really enjoyed helping the artists to explore the local context of our coast and the intrinsic links between the Gaelic language, culture and natural environment 🌍 Several thought provoking conversations emerged and it’s wonderful to see how the artists have taken this forward with their work, either through the language or cultural perspectives.

The exhibition opens this Thursday at The Alchemy Experiment in Glasgow and runs from the 11 - 24 April.

I’m in this month’s Outdoor Swimmer Magazine. Ceud mìle taing for the feature!

I’ve long been a fan of this fantastic publication so it’s really cool to be in it. It’s also great to see the brilliant The Pierhouse Hotel being written about so glowingly from a destination swimming point of view 🌊

Speaking of which, there are still one or two spaces available for our next ‘Swim with the Seasons’ weekend on 27/28 April! Contact the reservations team at the Pierhouse to book.

An Coire Bhreacain 🏊‍♂️ Am bu toil leibh snàmh thairis air a’ chaolas ainmeil?

The Corryvreckan 🏊‍♂️ Would you like to swim across the famous strait?

As a local guide, I’ve spent a while getting to know this infamous body of water, having swam it a few times and professionally assessed the risks. Now with an appreciation for what this iconic swim takes and an authentic cultural understanding, I feel ready to facilitate swim attempts across this fabled strait. In partnership with fellow local operators Farsain Cruises & Charters, departures will be from Craobh Haven just south of Oban.

A fair amount of preparation goes into the organisation of this and flexibility is required. We have a few attempts booked in already for this season but there are some limited tide windows available. Alternatively, attempting the swim in 2025 might be more realistic. Either way, email me at [email protected] to get the ball rolling.

Here’s what is included and a few considerations:

🌪️ This can only be private chartered as an individual or small group for up to a max of 4.
🌪️ If booking as a small group of up to 4, all swimmers should know each other, be roughly a similar pace and/or prepared to swim together.
🌪️ You need to be able to swim 1km in 35-40 mins, as a minimum requirement in advance.
🌪️ The 4 hour chartered experience also includes a short acclimatisation swim just off the Sound of Jura in a beautiful and remote location (approx 1 hour before the Corryvreckan attempt).
🌪️ Full safety cover, cultural guidance and
coaching (if required) from an experienced local swim guide and open water coach.
🌪️ Fully coded and comfortable support vessel, designed with swimming in mind and a knowledgeable skipper.
🌪️ We have two tide windows a month (usually lasting 3 days) to facilitate swims across the Corryvreckan. In order to maximise the experience and safety we will aim for neap tides and at slack water, turning towards the ebb.

🌪️ Ultimately the Cailleach bheur is the boss 🌬️🏊‍♂️ She decides whether you will be permitted across.

I love being a part of the brilliant West Coast Wellness day retreats. Two lovely groups this weekend! 🩵

Back again very soon for more and for the return of our popular Swim - Sauna - Restore half-day sessions on the 12th May at 10am.

These involve a small group and focused guidance from me 🏊‍♂️ followed by sauna (and wildlife spotting if we’re lucky!) before a perfectly blended and restorative yoga practice in the dome. It’s an absolute winning combination!

Bhraithim uaim mo mháthair
I miss my mother

For those who didn’t know her my mum was a legend who was fiercely proud of her identity as an Irish woman and immigrant of Gaeldom. Her gatherings for Paddy’s Day 🇮🇪 in north London are still spoken about today, which brought everyone together. It wasn’t just about the amazing craic and getting drunk, it was so much more than that 🎶 🗣️ 📖 🍽️

I remember fondly how she’d recite ancient tales of the Fianna, Tír na nÓg, warrior Queen Méabh to the more modern day poetry of freedom fighters like Pádraig Anraí Mac Piarais and Bernadette Devlin. But what is most dear to me is her words of wisdom. She was an incredibly wise woman who not only had a direct influence on her children but also a powerful influence on our friends and the multitude of her own friends that she had from so many backgrounds and walks of life.

She was a person that you went to for advice and you always felt lighter after a chat. Her worldly experience and intuitive gift for emotional intelligence meant she had a useful answer for everything, often citing some seanfhocail (proverb) to get the point across. Here’s one of her favourites:

- Ní dhéanfaidh smaoineamh an treabhadh duit

(You’ll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind)

📣 New experience announcement!

Dòigh Nàdair - The Way of Nature Retreat

With an exciting (and relatively fully booked 🙏) season ahead I wasn’t going to commit to creating any new experiences this year. Aside from my Dan the Merman work, I’m also studying part-time, teach in a local school part-time and undertake voluntary community work on behalf of Companaich Dhail Riada.

However, having met the beautiful souls that are Becks and Ninn I immediately revised that notion! Then after I’d explored the remote and relatively un-get-at-able inner Hebridean island where Wild Island Experience is based, the excitement grew further.

Situated just off Luing, I invite you to re-align and re-engage with nature for an off-grid yet very comfortable island experience like no other.

Once picked up from Luing 🛥️ you’ll be taken across wild water ways, steeped full of lore. On the island you’ll join a small group of like minded folk for a fully inclusive weekend of guided walks, swims, snorkels, culture, connection, wellness, great food, craic and an authentic sense of place 🌍☯️ 🦅 🌊 🐬 🤿

12-14 July 2024

Very limited spaces available. For more info and to book, contact Becks at [email protected]

I’ll be posting more about this over the next while but if you’re already convinced then get booked in 😉
