It's Wear a Guernsey Day!

Guernsey Woollens are hosting this year's event celebrating the traditional guernsey jumper, and fundraising for local charity Les Bourgs Hospice.

A ‘guernsey’ is a knitted jumper that has been traditionally made in Guernsey since the early 1800s. It was originally worn by fishermen due to its resilience and has since become an important item of clothing that many people from all across the world are proud to own.

For those on-Island, don your guernsey and head to the Guernsey Information Centre between 10am - 4pm, browse the stalls and enter the photo competition - Bean Jar and Gâche Mélée will also be available.

For those off-island, we'd love to know where in the world you'll be wearing your guernsey. Let us know below!

Wear a Guernsey Day!

If you have yet to purchase a guernsey for ‘Wear a Guernsey Day’… pop into Art for Guernsey!

This Thursday is Wear a Guernsey Day, and we have the perfect exhibition to celebrate this iconic garment!

Art for Guernsey is delighted to be collaborating with Le Tricoteur Guernsey to present an exhibition exploring the local and international history and stories of the guernsey through a series of commissioned artworks by Sally Ede-Golightly Art

Each original artwork is paired with a unique guernsey, augmented with a bespoke stitched detail. As well as the original paintings, we have fine art prints of the same artworks, which are also paired with limited-edition guernseys. Accompanying the artworks and guernseys are fascinating narratives which tell the stories behind this wonderful garment, and honour the people who wear it.

Today: a blue plaque will be unveiled for Edith Renouf MBE (1864 - 1956).

The plaque will be unveiled today, Friday 8th November, at 10.30am at Le Platon Home.

Having trained as a doctor, Edith founded Le Platon Home in 1914 when she was 50 years old. In 1952, King George VI awarded an MBE on Miss Renouf just four years before she died at the age of 92. The Guernsey Evening Press wrote at the time, "That gallant little lady's Home was a house of peace for many aged islanders who grew to love her as a mother".
