Who's this big guy?

It's one of Scotland's greatest heroes - Sir William Wallace, nestled perfectly into the Borders countryside.

The Wallace Monument, tucked away near Melrose, offers stunning views of the Eildon hills and the River Tweed.

Erected in 1814, the monument is a striking stone structure standing 21.5 feet (6.6 meters) high. It was built by David Stuart Erskine, the 11th Earl of Buchan, who was an admirer of Wallace and symbolises Scotland's enduring spirit and the fight for freedom.

A visit here is not just a journey through history but a celebration of Scottish pride and resilience and is coupled with the most serene and picturesque short country walk.

On this day in 1746, the last pitched battle on British soil unfolded. It was the climax of the Jacobite Rising of 1745, a dramatic chapter etched into Scotland's rich history.

In 1745, Charles Edward Stewart landed in Scotland and rallied supporters at Glenfinnan. Victories followed at Prestonpans and Falkirk, but fate turned at Derby, prompting a fateful retreat to Culloden.

At Culloden, near Inverness, the Jacobite army met with Government forces. At around 1pm on 16th April 1746 the Jacobite artillery opened fire, beginning the Battle of Culloden. Within about an hour the battle was over, and so was the final Jacobite campaign.

Panel 60 of the Great Tapestry vividly captures this historic saga, showcasing key figures and locations of the Jacobite cause. Come immerse yourself in Scotland's vibrant history and witness the tales woven into our heritage.
